EDD Pregnancy SDI payment delayed after submitting baby info - how long until I get paid?
I've been on pregnancy disability since December and had my baby 3 weeks ago. My regular SDI payments suddenly stopped after delivery. I got a notification from EDD asking for my baby's birthdate and delivery method (c-section). They said I could call to provide this info or submit it through the online portal. I chose to submit the form through my SDI Online account this morning rather than calling that impossible-to-reach phone line. Has anyone experienced this? How long does it typically take for them to process this information and release my payment? This delay is stressing me out since I have bills due in 5 days and was counting on this payment.

•Only 4 days? That's a relief! Did they backpay from when it was supposed to be paid originally? I'm worried about late fees on my utility bills.

This is standard procedure. For pregnancy claims, EDD needs verification of your delivery date to determine how to process your benefits going forward. If you had a vaginal delivery, you typically qualify for 6 weeks of SDI after birth. For a C-section, it's usually 8 weeks. After your postpartum SDI ends, you can transition to Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding time. The online form you submitted is the right approach, but processing times vary. Currently it's taking about 5-7 business days for them to process this information and release payment. They will backdate your payment to include any missed weeks. If you don't see movement on your claim by next Tuesday, you might need to follow up.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I did have a C-section, so I'm planning to use the full 8 weeks of SDI before switching to PFL. I just wish they didn't hold up payment while waiting for this info - it creates such financial stress right when you're dealing with a newborn.

Congrats on the baby!!! I went through this exact same thing in January. So exciting but the EDD stuff is SUCH a headache at the worst possible time!!! 🤦♀️

•Thank you! And yes, why does it have to be so complicated right when you're sleep deprived and learning to care for a newborn? 😩

I went through this exact process in February 2025. The online form submission is definitely the right move, but in my experience, EDD is currently taking 7-10 business days to process these postpartum verification forms. One thing to note: make sure you completed the DE 2501FP form specifically (the Pregnancy/Post-Partum Medical Certification). The system sometimes directs people to the wrong form, and that can further delay processing. Also, if you're planning to transition to Paid Family Leave after your SDI ends, start that application process at least 10 days before your disability period ends to avoid a gap in payments. The transition isn't automatic - you'll need to file a separate PFL claim.

•Thank you for the advice! I'm not sure if it was the DE 2501FP form specifically - it was just the form that appeared when I clicked on the message in my SDI Online inbox. I'll double-check. And thanks for the tip about starting the PFL application early - I had no idea it wasn't automatic!

If you need your payment urgently and can't wait for them to process the form, I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative directly. After submitting my baby info online, I was still waiting after a week with no movement. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes who processed my info right away and released my payment that same day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd It saved me from late fees on my mortgage payment! With a newborn at home, the last thing you need is to waste hours trying to call EDD yourself.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO DELAY YOUR MONEY!!! I went through this exact thing last year and NOBODY at EDD seems to understand that new moms can't spend HOURS on the phone!!! I submitted my form online and it took FIFTEEN DAYS to process!!! By that point I had late fees on EVERYTHING. EDD should just AUTOMATICALLY continue payments until they process the new info - it's CRUEL to cut people off when they have a NEWBORN!!!!!

•15 days is terrifying! I really hope mine doesn't take that long. I've already started calling my utility companies to explain the situation.

I had my baby in January and had this same issue. Just an FYI - you might want to check that you properly classified your delivery method. I accidentally clicked vaginal delivery (I was exhausted when filling it out!) but I had a C-section, and that caused additional delays because my doctor's certification specified C-section. They had to reconcile the conflicting info which added another week to the process. Double-check what you submitted!

•Oh that's a good point! I'm pretty sure I selected C-section on the form, but now I'm second-guessing myself. Is there a way to verify what I submitted?

•I don't think you can see what you submitted, but if you're worried, you could submit another form to be safe. In my experience they just use the most recent submission.

One more thing I should mention - make sure your doctor has submitted the updated medical certification form that indicates your actual delivery date and method. Sometimes the delay isn't just about the information you provided, but that they're waiting for your healthcare provider to submit updated paperwork. If it's been more than 10 days since you submitted your information, I would recommend contacting your doctor's office to confirm they've sent in the updated certification. This is especially important for C-section deliveries since you're eligible for the extended disability period.

•I didn't even think about that! I'll call my OB's office tomorrow to make sure they submitted everything. They're usually pretty on top of paperwork, but it doesn't hurt to check. Thank you!

Based on recent processing times, you should see movement on your claim within 5-7 business days. EDD will backpay any missed payments, so you won't lose any benefits. For your future planning: After your postpartum SDI ends (8 weeks post-C-section), you'll need to apply separately for Paid Family Leave. There's typically a few days gap between programs where you won't receive payment as they process the transition. Just something to budget for! Also, I recommend setting a calendar reminder to submit your PFL claim exactly 10 days before your SDI benefit period ends. This maximizes your chances of a smooth transition.

•Thank you for the timeline! That helps set my expectations. I'll definitely set that calendar reminder for the PFL application - that's excellent advice.

I'm going through something similar right now! Had my baby 2 weeks ago and my SDI payments stopped immediately after delivery. I submitted the birth info through the online portal 5 days ago and still haven't seen any movement on my claim. Reading through these responses is really helpful - sounds like 5-7 days is pretty typical for processing. One thing I learned from my experience is to screenshot everything when you submit forms online. I wish I had taken a picture of my submission confirmation because now I'm paranoid I filled something out wrong! @Amina Bah - definitely call your OB office like others suggested. Mine told me they automatically send updated certifications after delivery, but it doesn't hurt to confirm. Also, if you're really stressed about the timing with your bills, consider calling your utility companies to explain the situation. Most have programs for temporary payment delays, especially for new parents dealing with benefit processing delays. Hang in there - the money will come, it's just frustrating timing when you're already dealing with a newborn! 💕

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's oddly comforting to know I'm not alone in this situation. The screenshot tip is brilliant - I definitely should have done that. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it. You're absolutely right about calling the utility companies. I already reached out to my electric company and they were surprisingly understanding about the EDD delay. They gave me a 2-week extension without any fees. It's crazy how this whole system seems designed to stress out new parents at the worst possible time! But reading everyone's experiences here has really helped calm my anxiety. Fingers crossed both our payments come through soon! 🤞

I just went through this exact situation last month! Had my baby in February and dealt with the same payment stoppage. The good news is that submitting through the online portal was definitely the right choice - much faster than trying to get through on the phone. In my case, it took exactly 6 business days from when I submitted the birth information for my payments to resume. They did backpay for the missed week, so you won't lose any money, just dealing with the cash flow issue temporarily. A couple things that helped me during the wait: I called my credit card company and explained the situation (they were surprisingly understanding about EDD delays), and I also checked with my pediatrician's office to make sure they had submitted any required newborn paperwork to EDD if applicable. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking when you have bills due, but hang in there - based on when you submitted this morning, you should hopefully see movement by early next week. Congrats on your new baby! 🎉

•Thank you for sharing your timeline! 6 business days gives me hope that I'll see movement by early next week. I'm relieved to hear about the backpay too - that was one of my biggest worries. The credit card company tip is smart! I didn't even think to call them. I've been so focused on the utility bills that I forgot about my credit card payment that's due soon too. It's so reassuring to hear from people who've been through this exact same process recently. Makes me feel like I'm not going crazy for being stressed about it! And thank you for the congratulations - despite all this EDD drama, I'm absolutely in love with my little one. 💕 Hopefully both @Malik Jenkins and I will have good news to share soon!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm in almost the exact same situation - had my baby 10 days ago via C-section and my SDI payments stopped right after delivery. I submitted the birth information through the online portal 3 days ago and have been anxiously checking my account every few hours. Reading everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful and reassuring. It sounds like 5-7 business days is pretty standard, so I should hopefully see some movement by early next week. The financial stress is real though - why do they have to cut off payments while processing this routine information? @Amina Bah I totally feel you on the timing stress with bills due! I've started calling my creditors proactively to explain the situation. Most have been understanding about EDD processing delays. One thing I'm wondering - for those who've been through this recently, did you get any kind of notification when EDD processed your information and released the payment? Or did the money just show up in your account without warning? Congratulations on your new arrival! Despite all this bureaucratic nonsense, these newborn snuggles make it all worth it. ❤️

•Welcome to the EDD waiting game club! 😅 I'm dealing with this exact same thing right now. Had my little one 3 weeks ago and been waiting 1 day since submitting the birth info online. Reading everyone's timelines here is honestly keeping me sane - it's so helpful to know this delay is completely normal even though it feels anything but normal when you're stressed about bills! To answer your question about notifications - from what I've read in other threads, most people said the money just appeared in their account without any advance notice. The EDD online portal sometimes updates first, but not always. So definitely keep checking both! The proactive calling of creditors is such a smart move. I've been doing the same thing and you're right that most are surprisingly understanding about EDD delays. Seems like this happens often enough that they're familiar with the situation. Hang in there mama - sounds like we should all hopefully see some movement early next week based on everyone's experiences! And yes, those newborn snuggles definitely make all this bureaucratic stress worth it. 💕

I went through this exact same situation in December 2024! The wait is absolutely nerve-wracking when you're already dealing with sleep deprivation and a newborn. In my experience, submitting through the online portal was definitely the right choice - it took about 6 business days for them to process everything and release my backpay. The key thing that helped me was calling my doctor's office to confirm they had submitted the updated medical certification with my actual delivery date and method (C-section in my case). Turns out there was a delay on their end that I didn't know about! Also, I highly recommend reaching out to your utility companies and credit card companies now to explain the situation. Most have policies for EDD processing delays since this happens so frequently. I was able to get extensions on everything without any late fees. The system is definitely not designed with new parents in mind, but the money will come through with backpay. Based on your timeline of submitting this morning, you should hopefully see movement by early next week. Hang in there and congratulations on your little one! 💕

•Thank you for sharing your experience! It's so helpful to hear from someone who went through this recently. 6 business days gives me a realistic timeline to work with, and the tip about calling my doctor's office is really smart - I hadn't thought about potential delays on their end. I'm definitely going to reach out to my creditors tomorrow to get ahead of any potential late fees. It's frustrating that this is such a common issue that companies have specific policies for EDD delays, but at least that works in our favor! The sleep deprivation is real - I can barely think straight some days, so dealing with bureaucracy on top of everything else feels impossible. But reading everyone's stories here has been such a relief. Thanks for the encouragement and congratulations! 💕

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Had my baby via C-section 5 days ago and my SDI payments stopped immediately after delivery. I submitted the birth information through the online portal yesterday morning and have been obsessively checking my account ever since. Reading through all these experiences has been such a huge relief - I was starting to panic that something was wrong with my claim! It's so helpful to know that 5-7 business days seems to be the standard processing time right now. The timing really couldn't be worse though - I have my mortgage payment due next week and was counting on this SDI payment. I'm definitely going to take everyone's advice here and call my mortgage company tomorrow to explain the EDD delay situation. @Amina Bah thanks for starting this thread! It's oddly comforting to know so many of us are dealing with this exact same bureaucratic nightmare at such an overwhelming time. The fact that this is so common really shows how broken the system is for new parents. Fingers crossed we all get our payments processed soon! And congratulations on your little one! 💕

•@Charity Cohan I m'so glad this thread is helping you too! It s'amazing how many of us are going through the exact same thing right now. The mortgage payment stress is so real - I have the same worry about my bills next week. Definitely call your mortgage company - from what others have shared, most lenders are familiar with EDD delays and willing to work with you. It really is frustrating that this routine process causes so much financial anxiety for new parents when we re'already dealing with so much! But seeing everyone s'timelines here gives me hope that we should all see movement by early next week. Hang in there and congratulations on your new baby! We ve'got this! 💪

I'm currently going through this same situation! Had my baby 2 weeks ago and submitted the birth info through the online portal 3 days ago. The financial stress is so real when you have bills due and payments just suddenly stop. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring - it sounds like 5-7 business days is pretty typical for processing right now. I've started calling my utility companies and credit card companies to explain the EDD delay, and most have been surprisingly understanding about extending due dates. One thing I learned from my sister who went through this last year - she said to keep checking both your SDI online account AND your bank account, because sometimes the payment shows up before the online portal updates. Also, she recommended taking screenshots of everything you submit in the future, which I wish I had thought of! The whole system really seems designed to stress out new parents at the worst possible time, but it's comforting to know this is just a routine processing delay and not an actual problem with our claims. Hang in there everyone - sounds like we should all hopefully see movement early next week! 💕
