EDD SDI pregnancy claim still pending after 6 weeks even with birth certificate submitted
I'm at my wit's end with EDD! Filed for pregnancy disability on March 12, 2025 (almost 6 weeks ago) and my claim is STILL showing as 'processing' in the online portal. My doctor submitted all medical certification forms immediately. I even uploaded my daughter's birth certificate 2 weeks ago as additional proof since she was born on April 1st, but nothing has changed! I've called the EDD number at least 30 times over the past few weeks and either get disconnected or am told the wait time exceeds 2 hours. I can't afford to be without income this long with a newborn at home! My employer says everything was submitted correctly on their end too. Has anyone else experienced this kind of delay with pregnancy SDI claims recently? What worked to finally get your claim processed? I'm desperate at this point...

•7 weeks?? That's insane! Did you do anything to speed it up or literally just wait? I'm almost out of savings at this point.

The delay you're experiencing is unfortunately common right now. There are a few things you should check: 1. Verify that your medical provider used the correct EDD Customer Account Number on your DE 2501 form 2. Check if your SDI Online account shows any "Additional Information Required" notices 3. Make sure there's no conflict between your last day worked (as reported by your employer) and what your doctor submitted If everything looks correct, you can request an expedited review by submitting a message through your SDI Online portal specifically stating financial hardship with a newborn. Use the exact phrase "Urgent Financial Hardship Request" in the subject line.

•Thank you for these specific steps! I just checked and don't see any information requests, but I'll definitely send that urgent hardship message right now. Do you know if they actually respond to those messages faster than processing claims?

Is this your first pregnancy claim? I had a similar situation but it was because I accidentally checked the wrong box about returning to work. They couldn't process until they confirmed when I was actually planning to go back. Just a thought!

•This is a good point. The return-to-work date discrepancies are one of the most common reasons for delayed pregnancy disability claims. If your doctor estimated one return date on the medical certification but you indicated another date on your initial application, it flags for manual review which takes much longer.

After struggling for weeks trying to reach EDD about my delayed pregnancy claim last month, I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that basically waits on hold for you and calls you when an actual EDD rep is on the line. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd It was the only way I actually got to speak to someone after trying for days. The agent told me my claim was stuck because they needed additional verification of my identity (which they never notified me about). Once I uploaded my ID through the portal after the call, my claim was processed within 48 hours.

•Thank you! I've never heard of this service but at this point I'm willing to try anything. Did you find it easy to use? I just need to speak to an actual human who can tell me what's going on with my claim.

•Yes, it was pretty simple! You put in your info and they basically wait on hold instead of you. I got a call back in about 40 minutes when they had an EDD rep on the line. Just make sure you have your claim info ready when they connect you.

Not to make things more confusing, but are you sure you filed for the right benefit? There's Pregnancy Disability (SDI) which is for before birth and recovery, and then there's Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding after recovery. Some people file for the wrong one or don't realize they need to file TWICE - once for each benefit. Just checking since you mentioned already having the baby.

•That's a really good question actually. I applied for SDI for pregnancy disability, but my doctor certified me for 4 weeks before delivery and 6 weeks after (I had a normal delivery). So my understanding was that SDI covers that whole period and then I apply for PFL after the recovery period ends. Is that not right?

•You're correct about how the benefits work. SDI covers your pregnancy disability period (typically 4 weeks before and 6-8 weeks after delivery depending on delivery type), then you transition to PFL for bonding time. You don't need to file for PFL until your SDI claim is nearing its end. One thing to check - did you receive any award letter or notice after initially filing? Even if your claim is processing, you should have received some acknowledgment. If not, there might be an issue with your contact information in the system.

Update from what I'm seeing with recent claims: EDD has been experiencing significant processing delays specifically with pregnancy claims filed in March 2025. There was apparently a system update that affected how medical certification forms are matched to claims. Here's what I recommend: 1. Send a message through your SDI Online account specifically requesting a "claim processing status update" 2. Have your medical provider call the Medical Provider Concierge Line (they have a separate number) to confirm your certification was properly received 3. If you can reach an agent by phone, request a "priority processing review" based on financial hardship Additionally, for anyone facing extended delays, you can contact your state assembly member's office. They have constituent services staff who can often get quick responses from EDD.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! I didn't know about the March system update - that explains a lot. I'm going to try all of these steps and will contact my assembly member if I don't see movement by next week. I really appreciate everyone's help here!

Just wondering - have you checked your mail carefully? Sometimes EDD sends physical letters requesting additional info while the online portal just shows "processing" with no updates. I almost missed a time-sensitive request because I thought everything would be online!

•That's a good point! I moved about 6 months ago and while I updated my address with EDD, I should double check if anything might have been sent to my old address. I'll contact my old landlord tomorrow to see if anything came there.

my cousin works at edd and she says they're SUPER understaffed right now. like half the normal people handling claims. so everything is backed up. but pregnancy claims should get priority? idk maybe ask about that specifically

Just checking back - did you have any luck with the suggestions? Sometimes it can help to send a message through SDI Online specifically referencing "Section 2706 of the Unemployment Insurance Code" which requires timely payment of benefits when there's no question of eligibility. This often flags your claim for expedited review.

•I was finally able to reach someone at EDD yesterday using the Claimyr service that was suggested! Turns out there was an issue matching my medical certification to my claim because my doctor's office had transposed two digits in my SSN. The agent fixed it immediately and said my claim should be processed within 5-7 business days. I also asked about backpay and they confirmed I'll receive everything from my disability start date. Thank you all so much for your help - this forum has been a lifesaver!
