Still waiting on EDD maternity SDI approval after 3 weeks - normal or concerning?

I submitted my maternity leave disability claim on January 11th (just over 3 weeks ago) and my claim status is still showing 'pending' in the SDI Online portal. My OB/GYN completed and submitted the medical certification right away - I confirmed with her office last week. I'm due in early March and getting anxious because I need to plan finances before the baby comes! I've tried calling EDD 4 times but never get through to an actual person. Is 3+ weeks normal for maternity SDI claim processing in 2025? Anyone else experiencing delays right now? I really need to know when I can expect benefits to start coming in!

3 weeks is actually pretty normal right now. my sis just went through this in december and it took almost a month. they said january/february is super busy season for them cuz of tax stuff

Thanks! That's a bit reassuring. Did your sister do anything specific to get it processed or just wait it out?

They're running behind schedule this year because of the new certification system. I filed my maternity SDI claim in early December and it took exactly 26 days to process. Make sure you've completed the DE 2501 form correctly and that your doctor properly filled out their portion with your expected delivery date and recovery period. The most common delay with pregnancy claims is when doctors don't specify the standard 4-week pre-delivery and 6-week post-delivery disability periods (8 weeks for C-section).

Thank you! Yes, I double-checked my doctor's certification and she included all those details correctly. I guess I just need to be patient, but it's so stressful when you don't know if there's a problem or it's just taking time.

OMG the SAME thing is happening to me!!! I filed on January 5th and STILL PENDING!! This is my first pregnancy and I'm freaking out because my employer disability only covers part of my salary and I NEED the EDD portion to pay rent!!! Has anyone actually gotten a NEW claim approved in January??!!?

Hang in there! My claim just got approved yesterday after waiting since January 2nd. No explanation for the delay, just suddenly changed to approved.

The current processing time for NEW maternity SDI claims is approximately 21-28 days, which is longer than their normal 14-day target. This is happening because: 1. January is typically high-volume after holiday staffing reductions 2. EDD implemented system updates in December 2024 that created a backlog 3. There's an increase in claims volume compared to this time last year Your best course of action is to ensure your online account shows your doctor has submitted their certification (sounds like you've done this). If you're approaching 30+ days without a decision, you should try to speak with an EDD representative directly. One tip: check your spam/junk folders. EDD sometimes sends notices requesting additional information that get filtered out, which further delays claims.

Thank you for such detailed information! This is really helpful. I'll keep an eye on my spam folder and give it another week before really panicking.

i had a baby last year and my claim took like 5 weeks to get approved lol... then they backdated everything so i got a big first payment. the edd system is sooooo slow especially for first time claims. if your doctor did everything right youll probably be fine just gotta wait it out

I was in the exact same situation last month. After waiting 3+ weeks, I was desperate to get an answer because my due date was coming up fast. I tried calling EDD over 20 times and either got disconnected or was told the wait time was 4+ hours. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Turns out there was a small issue with my doctor's certification that I could fix right away. My claim was approved 2 days later! Sometimes just talking to a real person makes all the difference with these maternity claims.

Does this actually work??? I've been trying to call EDD for DAYS with no luck!!

Yep, it really worked for me! Way better than wasting days trying to get through on my own. The rep was able to see exactly what was holding up my claim.

btw make sure you understand the difference between SDI maternity disability and PFL bonding time. theres 2 separate claims and lots of people get confused. disability is before/right after birth, bonding is the extra weeks after

Yes! I've been researching this. I'll need to file the PFL claim separately after my SDI disability claim ends. Thanks for the reminder!

Update us when your claim gets approved! I track these timelines because EDD never publishes official processing times for maternity claims and it helps other moms know what to expect. My best guess, based on what I'm seeing, is that you'll probably see movement by the end of this week.

I definitely will! And thanks for collecting this data - it's so helpful to have real examples instead of just the official line from EDD.

So I just had a friend who works at a doctor's office tell me that EDD is actually LOSING some of the medical certifications right now!!! She said make sure your doctor's office can confirm that EDD received it, not just that they sent it. Apparently there's some glitch in their new system!!

This is partially accurate. There's not a widespread issue of "losing" certifications, but there is a known issue where certain electronic submissions aren't properly attaching to claims if they're submitted with specific software versions. Your doctor's office should be able to check the submission status through their provider portal. If they show it was successfully received but it's not appearing on your claim, that's when you need to contact EDD directly.

GOOD NEWS! My claim was just approved this morning! Total wait time was 24 days from submission to approval. The payment is already showing as processing in my account. Thanks everyone for your help and reassurance!
