Pregnancy Disability Claim Stuck on 'Pending' for 2+ Weeks - Normal Processing Time?

I submitted my pregnancy disability claim on March 12th, 2025 (exactly 16 days ago) and it's still showing 'pending processing' on the EDD website. My OB took me off work on March 10th due to pregnancy complications (severe pelvic pain and early contractions), and I filed everything online two days later. My doctor confirmed she submitted her medical certification electronically on March 13th with all the required diagnosis codes. \n\nThis is my first time filing for SDI and I'm getting really anxious watching my bank account dwindle while waiting for benefits to start. How long is the normal processing time for pregnancy disability claims these days? I've read everything from 7 days to 6 weeks online and I'm freaking out a little! Does the 'pending processing' status mean they're reviewing it or is something wrong with my application? Would calling help speed things up at all?

mine took almost 4 weeks to get approved for my pregnancy disability last fall. EDD is super backed up right now. as long as you can see that your doctor submitted their part, you should be good. just gotta wait it out unfortunately

4 weeks?! That's so frustrating. My doctor definitely submitted their part - I can see it on the claim details. I'm just worried because my last paycheck is about to run out and I need to know when to expect some income. Did yours show 'pending processing' the whole time too?

The standard processing time for SDI pregnancy claims is currently running 2-3 weeks, though it can sometimes take up to 4 weeks during higher volume periods. The 'pending processing' status is completely normal - it just means your claim is in the queue waiting to be reviewed by an EDD representative. \n\nA few things to keep in mind:\n1. The 7-day waiting period for SDI doesn't start getting paid, so your first week after filing won't receive benefits\n2. Once approved, you'll receive a lump sum payment for the time since your claim began (minus the waiting period)\n3. Make sure your doctor included the correct ICD-10 diagnostic codes related to your pregnancy complications\n\nIf it goes beyond 3 weeks, then you might want to try contacting EDD to check if anything is holding up your claim.

Thank you for the detailed information! That's reassuring to know the 'pending' status is normal. My doctor definitely included the diagnostic codes - she specializes in high-risk pregnancies and has done tons of these forms. I'll try to be patient for another week before panicking.

LOL at standard processing time. nothing standard about EDD these days. my claim took 5 weeks and then they only paid me for half the time because they said they needed additional info from my doctor. the whole system is a joke

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did they at least tell you what additional info they needed? I'm worried my doctor might have missed something even though she said she filled everything out correctly.

If you need to reach EDD urgently, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was in a similar situation with my SDI claim stuck in pending for nearly 3 weeks. After countless failed attempts to get through on my own, I used their service and was connected to an actual EDD representative in about 25 minutes. They were able to check my claim status and found there was a small discrepancy they needed to resolve. \n\nCheck out their site at claimyr.com - they have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd \n\nIt saved me weeks of additional waiting and the stress of not knowing what was happening with my claim.

Yes, it absolutely works. That's exactly what was happening to me too - constant busy signals or getting disconnected after waiting on hold. Claimyr got me connected to an actual human at EDD who could see and help with my specific claim. Worth every penny for the peace of mind alone.

I had my baby in January and remember being super stressed about this too! My pregnancy disability claim sat in pending for exactly 18 days before it changed to approved. What I learned is that it really depends on how busy they are and if they need to manually review anything. \n\nOne thing to check - log into your SDI Online account and make sure under

Thank you! Yes, I checked and my doctor's certification definitely shows as received in the system. It's good to know 18 days isn't unusual. I'm trying to be patient but it's definitely stressful when bills are coming due! Congrats on your baby!

is this ur first pregnancy disability claim? they usually process faster if you've filed before! also sometimes calling can help but only if u can actually get through lol. my first pregnancy took foreverrrr (like 5 weeks) but my second one only took 8 days. literally no consistency with edd

Yes, it's my first time filing for disability ever. That's interesting that repeat claims process faster! Maybe they already have some of your information in the system? I'll try calling but from what everyone's saying, it sounds nearly impossible to get through.

Quick update - I just checked the EDD processing times page, and they're currently reporting 14-21 days as the standard processing time for new SDI claims. So at 16 days, you're still within the normal timeframe. If it goes beyond 21 days without any status change, that's when I'd recommend reaching out to them directly.

Thank you for the update! That makes me feel better. I'll give it until 21 days before I start trying to call them.

wait i thought pregnancy wasnt considered a disability??? i thought you had to use paid family leave for that stuff?

There's often confusion about this. In California, pregnancy-related medical conditions are covered under State Disability Insurance (SDI), while bonding with a new child after birth falls under Paid Family Leave (PFL). Typically, you'd use SDI for the weeks before birth and recovery period after delivery (usually 6-8 weeks depending on delivery type), then switch to PFL for bonding time. They're separate programs but both administered through EDD.

UPDATE: I just checked my account and I've finally been approved after 16 days! My claim status changed from 'pending processing' to 'approved' this morning, and it shows my first payment is being processed. Thank you everyone for your responses and support - it really helped calm my anxiety during the wait!
