Preeclampsia & pregnancy disability claim - how long until EDD processes my application?
Just diagnosed with preeclampsia at 32 weeks and my OB immediately put me on pregnancy disability. This is my first time dealing with EDD SDI and I'm already stressed about finances. My doctor's office mailed my medical certification form 3 days ago, but I haven't received any confirmation from EDD yet. How long does it typically take for them to process pregnancy disability claims once they receive the paperwork? I'm trying to budget and figure out when I might see my first payment. Also, should I create an SDI Online account now or wait until they process my claim? Really appreciate any advice from moms who've been through this!

•Thank you! That's really helpful to know. I was worried it would take months with all the horror stories I've heard about EDD.

Create your SDI Online account RIGHT NOW. Don't wait! This will let you track your claim status, and you'll need it to certify for continued benefits. Processing times have been averaging 10-14 business days recently for most pregnancy disability claims, assuming your doctor filled out all the paperwork correctly. Make sure you understand the 7-day waiting period too - you won't be paid for the first 7 days of your disability period. So if your doctor certified you starting February 1st, your benefits would actually start February 8th. Be prepared that they might contact your doctor's office for verification, which can add a few days to processing.

•I had no idea about creating the account early! Thank you so much, I'll do that right now. And thanks for the info about the waiting period - I didn't realize I wouldn't get paid for the first week. That definitely affects my budget planning.

I went through this with my pregnancy last year, and it was NERVE-WRACKING waiting for approval!!! I ended up waiting almost 3 WEEKS before my claim was approved, and then another week before money showed up on my card. The WORST part was I couldn't get anyone on the phone at EDD to tell me if they even RECEIVED my paperwork!!! I was so stressed on top of having pregnancy complications!

•Same experience here. The waiting is terrible especially when you're already dealing with a high-risk pregnancy. Hope you're doing better now!

I had preeclampsia with my second baby in 2024! My advice is to call EDD after 7-10 business days if you don't see any updates on your SDI Online account. Be prepared though - their phone lines are absolutely swamped. I had to call 47 times before getting through! One thing that saved me tons of frustration was using Claimyr to connect to an EDD agent. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Their website is claimyr.com. It was seriously worth it to not spend days hitting redial. The agent confirmed they had my paperwork and gave me an estimated processing date. Also, make sure your doctor included your expected delivery date on your certification. Sometimes claims get delayed if that info is missing.

•Thank you for the preeclampsia solidarity! I'll definitely check out that service if I can't get through on the phones. Did your doctor put you on bed rest too? I'm trying to figure out what to expect with this condition.

•Yes, I was on modified bed rest - could get up for basic needs but no work, no errands, minimal activity. My blood pressure was super unstable. Make sure you're checking it regularly! The disability lasted until 6 weeks after delivery since preeclampsia can actually worsen postpartum. Your doctor can extend your disability period if needed.

Does anyone know if the weekly benefit amount for pregnancy disability is the same as regular SDI? I'm trying to figure out exactly how much I'll be getting per week. The EDD calculator online is confusing me because it keeps asking for my quarterly wages but I'm not sure which quarters to include.

•Yes, pregnancy disability uses the exact same benefit calculation as regular SDI - it's based on your highest quarter of wages during your base period. For claims filed in 2025, your base period is generally the 12 months ending 5-18 months before your claim. The weekly benefit amount is approximately 60-70% of your average weekly wage during your highest quarter, up to a maximum of $1,620 per week (2025 maximum).

•Oh that's a really good point, thank you! I'll keep an eye out for any mail from them. Did you eventually get approved after providing the additional info?

Have the doctor's office verify they included ALL the required info on the DE 2501 form. My claim got delayed because my doctor didn't complete section B properly - they left out the ICD-10 code for my condition. Once they fixed that, my claim processed in about a week. Also, don't panic if the first payment seems lower than expected - remember they don't pay for the waiting period (first 7 days).

•I'll call my doctor's office on Monday to verify everything was filled out correctly. That's a great tip. Do you happen to know if the doctor needs to include anything special for preeclampsia cases?

•No, I don't have the card yet. Another week on top of processing? Ugh, that's going to be cutting it close with bills. Thanks for mentioning this!

Just to clarify something I'm seeing in the comments - pregnancy disability is processed through the SAME system as regular SDI, since it's legally considered a temporary disability. There's no separate "fast track" for pregnancy claims (though they do tend to be more straightforward and thus sometimes process faster). For preeclampsia specifically, EDD is familiar with this as a qualifying condition, so that shouldn't cause any delays. Just make sure your doctor has properly indicated: 1. Diagnosis code (ICD-10) 2. Start date of disability 3. Expected duration (or estimated delivery date plus recovery period) 4. Whether you're totally or partially disabled I'd give it at least 10-14 business days (so about 2-3 calendar weeks) before getting too concerned.

•But they DO seem to process pregnancy claims faster on average! At least that was my experience. My first SDI claim for a back injury took FOREVER (like 6 weeks!!!) but my pregnancy one was done in 2 weeks. Maybe they prioritize them?

Quick tip: Take screenshots of EVERYTHING in your SDI Online account once you set it up. Sometimes information disappears or changes without explanation, and having documentation of what your claim showed previously can be helpful if you need to call. Also, if you're planning to transition to Paid Family Leave after recovery from childbirth, start looking into that process now. There's a separate application required, even though it's through the same EDD system.

•That's really good advice about the screenshots. I hadn't even thought about the PFL transition yet - so much to keep track of! Is there a waiting period between pregnancy disability ending and PFL starting?

Zoe Gonzalez
•No waiting period between pregnancy disability and PFL, which is great! Your pregnancy disability typically covers 4 weeks before birth and 6-8 weeks after (depending on delivery type). Then PFL can start immediately after for bonding time. You apply for PFL when your recovery period is ending. The current PFL maximum is 8 weeks of benefits.
