How long until EDD processes SDI claim for hospital bedrest during high-risk twin pregnancy?

My doctor put me on hospital bedrest yesterday for my high-risk twin pregnancy. I'm only 28 weeks and supposed to be working until 36 weeks, but complications forced an early hospitalization. My OB already completed the medical certification form, but I haven't submitted anything to EDD yet. I'm supposed to be here until delivery (probably another 6-8 weeks minimum).\n\nI'm panicking about finances - how quickly does EDD typically process SDI claims for pregnancy disability once I submit everything? Will they backdate to my first day of hospitalization? My husband is trying to handle this paperwork for me since I'm stuck in the hospital. Any advice on making sure this gets processed quickly? I'm so worried about paying bills while I'm out of work much longer than planned.

First, don't panic about the paperwork timing! EDD will backdate your claim to when your doctor certified you became disabled (your hospitalization date). Once you submit everything correctly, processing can take 7-14 days for a straightforward pregnancy disability claim. Make sure your doctor filled out Form DE 2501 completely - missing information is the #1 cause of delays.\n\nHave your husband double-check that your doctor included:\n- Exact date disability began (your hospitalization date)\n- Estimated date of delivery\n- ICD-10 code for your condition\n- Doctor's license number and signature\n\nSubmit online through SDI Online if possible - it's faster than mailing. Your claim can potentially begin processing the same day it's received.

Thank you!!! That makes me feel better. My OB said she filled everything out but I'll have my husband double check all those details before submitting. I didn't know online was faster than mailing - that's super helpful.

It took 3 WEEKS for my pregnancy disability to process earlier this year!!! But I found out later my doctor put the wrong diagnosis code. Make sure everything is 100% correct before submitting!!! And call them everyday to check on status seriously

Calling every day actually doesnt help and just clogs up the phone lines for everyone tbh. But I agree that checking EVERYTHING on the form before submitting is crucial. One little mistake can add weeks to processing.

my twin pregnancy put me in hospital too! They processed my claim pretty fast (like 10 days) but that was before covid. not sure how backed up they are now. hope your babies stay cooking as long as possible! hospital bedrest is THE WORST.

Thank you! Yeah, hospital bedrest is already driving me crazy and it's only been a day. Did they pay you for the entire hospital stay? I'm worried since this could be months.

yes they covered my whole hospital stay! i was in for 7 weeks before delivery. as long as your doctor certifies you need to be there (which with twins they will) you're covered! bring lots of puzzles and download netflix lol

For a high-risk pregnancy like yours, I'd recommend filing the claim online immediately - like tomorrow. If your doctor has already completed the medical certification, there's no reason to wait. Here's what will happen:\n\n1. You'll be assigned a claim number immediately when filing online\n2. There's a mandatory 7-day waiting period for SDI claims where no benefits are paid (this is normal)\n3. After the waiting period, benefits begin accumulating\n4. Processing usually takes 10-14 days from submission if everything is correct\n5. Your first payment will include all retroactive benefits from after your waiting period\n\nSince you're already hospitalized, make sure your doctor specifically noted this in the medical certification. Pregnancy disability for bed rest (especially hospital-mandated) is very straightforward and rarely denied. The weekly benefit amount is based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period.\n\nSide note: You might qualify for Paid Family Leave (PFL) after delivery for bonding time, which is a separate application you'll file later.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I didn't know about the 7-day waiting period. So even if approved quickly, there's still a week where I won't receive benefits? I'll tell my husband to submit the claim online tomorrow.

Yes, the 7-day waiting period is mandatory for all SDI claims. It's like a deductible period, but you only serve it once per benefit year, so any subsequent claims within 12 months won't have another waiting period. After that week, benefits begin accruing, but you won't receive payment until the claim is processed. First payment typically includes all retroactive benefits you're owed.

You should have used Claimyr! I was in the same situation with my pregnancy disability claim last month and couldn't get through to EDD. A friend recommended this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without the endless redial game. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd\n\nIt saved me so much stress during an already stressful time. I got through to an agent who fixed an issue with my medical certification that would have delayed my claim for weeks.

Thanks for sharing this - I'll definitely check it out if we have any issues. The last thing I need is phone stress while I'm stuck in this hospital bed!

Just want to add - make sure your doctor includes ALL your complications and diagnosis codes. With twins and hospital bedrest, your claim should be pretty clear cut, but the more medical documentation, the better. I've seen twin pregnancy SDI claims get approved in as little as 5-7 business days when all documentation is comprehensive.\n\nAlso, if your claim does take longer than 14 days to process, have your husband call EDD SDI at exactly 8:00am when they open. That's the only time you can get through without hours of waiting.\n\nOne last tip: Once your claim is established, set up the EDD debit card for direct deposit to your bank account right away. That saves 2-3 days of waiting for physical mail with each payment.

That's great advice about calling right at 8am! And I didn't know about transferring from the EDD debit card to my bank. Will definitely do that to avoid delays.

Hey i just want to say i hope everything goes well with your twins!! My sister had twins last year and had a similar situation with early hospital bedrest. One thing nobody mentioned yet - when you get your SDI payments, they'll be less than your regular paycheck because of tax differences and the benefit calculation. So plan your budget accordingly!! The max weekly benefit for 2025 is $1,580 but most people get less depending on their salary.

Thank you! Yes, I was wondering about the actual payment amount. My HR department mentioned something about it being about 60-70% of my normal pay? That's going to be tight but at least it's something.

It's actually closer to 60% of your gross wages, and then that's taxable too if you opt for tax withholding (which I recommend so you don't get surprised at tax time). So net-net many people end up with roughly 50-55% of their normal take-home pay.

I didn't ask about electronic submission! That's smart. I'll have my husband call the doctor's office today to see if they can submit it that way instead of giving us the paper form.
