How long after doctor submits EDD pregnancy disability claim until debit card arrives?

I'm 32 weeks pregnant with my first baby and my OB just put me on bed rest due to gestational hypertension. He completed and submitted my EDD disability paperwork last Friday (Sept 27). I've never been on any kind of disability before and have no idea how long this process takes. When should I expect to receive my EDD debit card in the mail? My last day of work was yesterday and I'm already stressing about bills coming due in 2 weeks. Does the doctor's office usually notify you when they've submitted everything? I can't reach anyone at my OB's office to confirm they actually sent everything in.

In my experience, it takes about 7-10 business days after EDD receives and processes your claim to get your debit card. The key thing is that your claim has to be approved first, then they issue the card. You should create an online account on the EDD website if you haven't already - that way you can check your claim status without calling them. Sometimes doctors don't submit things right away, so it's worth calling your OB office again to confirm the exact date they sent it in.

Thanks for this info! I just tried making an online account but it says I don't have a claim in the system yet. Does that mean my doctor hasn't submitted it? I'm going to call them again tomorrow morning.

it took FOREVER to get mine!!! like 3 weeks from when my dr sent it in. and then another week for the actual $ to show up. so frustrating, like don't they know we have bills to pay???

Oh no, that's what I'm afraid of! Did your doctor's office give you any kind of confirmation when they submitted it? I'm wondering if I should ask for some kind of proof.

There are a few important things to understand about this process: 1. Your doctor submits the DE2501 form to EDD for Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) 2. EDD typically takes 1-2 weeks to process a claim once they receive it 3. First-time claimants will get an EDD debit card mailed separately (7-10 days) 4. Your first payment may include retroactive benefits from your last day worked The online account won't show your claim until EDD has processed it into their system. If it's been more than 5 business days since your doctor submitted it, I recommend calling EDD directly to confirm they received it. Doctors' offices sometimes delay submitting these forms.

Good luck calling EDD! I spent 3 days trying before I finally got through. Their phone system is a nightmare - disconnected me 4 times after waiting over an hour each time.

my sister just went thru this last month... dr office sent in paperwork oct 3, she got card oct 17, first payment hit card oct 19. so like two-ish weeks for her

That's not too bad! Was that her first claim or had she received EDD benefits before? I'm wondering if first-time claims take longer.

The whole EDD system is BROKEN!!! I had my doctor submit my paperwork 2 MONTHS before my due date because I know how bad the system is, and I STILL didn't get paid until 3 weeks after I delivered!!! They kept saying they never got the doctor's certification even though my OB's office showed me proof they faxed it TWICE. By the time I got any money I was already $5000 in credit card debt from having to pay bills while waiting. The worst part is that when you transition from pregnancy disability to baby bonding, you have to go through the whole process again! UGGGGHHHH

OP, I want to clarify something important: What you're applying for now is State Disability Insurance (SDI) for pregnancy disability, not Paid Family Leave (PFL). They're two different programs administered by EDD. You'll use SDI while you're disabled from pregnancy before and after birth (typically up to 4 weeks before delivery and 6-8 weeks after, depending on delivery type). PFL (baby bonding) comes AFTER your pregnancy disability period ends, and you'll need to file a separate claim for that using form DE2508. It's a common area of confusion. To specifically answer your original question: If this is your first EDD claim ever, expect about 10-14 days for processing plus another 7-10 days for the debit card to arrive after approval.

Thank you so much for explaining this! I had no idea these were different programs. So I'll need to file another form after the baby comes? My doctor never explained any of this.

Just an update for you - I checked my records from my pregnancy last year. My timeline was: - Doctor submitted SDI claim: February 15, 2024 - Claim showed as "received" online: February 22 - Claim approved: February 28 - EDD Debit card arrived: March 5 - First payment on card: March 7 So about 3 weeks total from submission to money in hand. But knowing exactly when your doctor submitted is critical. They told me they submitted it one day, but when I called EDD, they hadn't received it until a week later. Doctors' offices can be very busy and sometimes paperwork sits on someone's desk.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'm going to call my doctor's office tomorrow and get the exact date they submitted it, and ask for some kind of confirmation. I really appreciate everyone's advice!

hey just wondering when your baby is due? my sister said if its less than 9 weeks away you should be ok money-wise because they backpay you from when dr took you off work, but if its further out than that you might wanna look into emergency assistance programs just in case

I'm due December 12, so about 10 weeks. That's a good point about backpay! I didn't know they do that.
