Do I need to submit anything for my pregnancy disability extension after doctor updates EDD?
I'm currently on pregnancy disability leave that was supposed to end this coming Monday. At my appointment yesterday, my OB decided I need to stay on disability for another 4 weeks due to complications with my blood pressure not returning to normal. She said her office would submit the extension paperwork directly to EDD through their online portal and told me I don't need to do anything on my end. This is my first pregnancy and I'm a bit confused about the process. Do I actually need to submit any additional forms myself for the extension? And will EDD notify me when they receive the extension from my doctor? My benefits are currently $1,475/week and I'm worried about a gap in payments since my original disability period ends so soon. Thanks for any help!

•Thanks! So I just keep submitting the continued claim forms as they come? I've been doing them online through SDI Online. I wasn't sure if I needed to start a whole new claim or something.

Your doctor should handle everything for the extension since they're the ones certifying your continued disability. However, I always recommend calling EDD after 3-5 business days to verify they received the extension. That way you can catch any problems early before your payments get interrupted. Extensions are usually processed smoothly, but sometimes doctors' offices forget to submit them or there are technical glitches.

•That's really helpful, thank you! I'll definitely call to confirm they received it. Do you know what number I should call specifically for pregnancy disability extensions?

Your doctor SHOULD handle everything, but I wouldn't trust them 100%. When I was on pregnancy disability last year, my doctor's office said they submitted my extension but EDD never got it!!! I went TWO WEEKS with no payment because I assumed everything was handled. I'd recommend calling EDD directly to confirm they received it. Good luck getting through though - I spent DAYS trying to reach someone.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! I can't afford to miss any payments. How did you finally resolve it? Did you have to submit anything yourself?

•I finally had to go back to my doctor's office in person and ask them to resubmit. Then I had to call EDD multiple times until I finally got through. It was a nightmare. The whole thing took almost 3 weeks to fix.

Based on my experience working with pregnancy disability claims, here's what you need to know: 1. Your doctor needs to submit form DE 2525XX (Doctor's Certificate Extension) to EDD 2. You do NOT need to file a new claim or complete any new paperwork yourself 3. You should continue to certify as normal through your SDI Online account 4. EDD typically does NOT notify you when they receive the extension from your doctor 5. The extension will automatically continue your current claim at the same benefit amount I recommend checking your claim status online 4-5 days after your doctor submits the extension. If you don't see it updated in your account after 5 business days, then call EDD to verify they received it. The regular disability phone line is 1-800-480-3287.

•Thank you so much for the detailed information! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll keep checking my account online and call if I don't see any updates by next Wednesday. Really appreciate the help!

I HATE that doctors tell patients "you don't need to do anything" because that's how people end up with payment gaps!!! Yes, technically the doctor submits the extension, but in my experience with TWO pregnancies, you absolutely should follow up. EDD is a mess and things fall through the cracks constantly.

•THIS! I had the same experience when I needed an extension for my mental health disability last year. My therapist said she submitted everything but when I called EDD they had NO RECORD of it. Always follow up!

If you want to make sure everything goes smoothly, I recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative quickly. I was in a similar situation with my disability extension and couldn't get through to EDD for days. I found this service that connects you with an EDD agent typically within 5-10 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. It saved me so much stress when I needed to confirm my extension was processed correctly.

•Oh wow, I didn't know a service like this existed. I'll definitely check it out if I have trouble getting through. The last time I called EDD I waited for over an hour and then got disconnected. Thanks for sharing!

•Does this actually work? I'm always suspicious of these third-party services...

•It worked for me! I was skeptical too, but after trying to get through to EDD for 3 days straight, I was desperate. The service connected me to an agent in about 7 minutes, and I was able to get my issue resolved in that same call.

hey quick question - u said ur getting $1475/week for preg disability?? that seems rly high. mine was only like $850/week last year. did u mean per month maybe??

•You're right - I meant $1,475 biweekly, not weekly! Sorry for the confusion. I get paid every two weeks.

One more thing I wanted to add - make sure your doctor specified the correct extended date on their form. I've seen cases where doctors accidentally put the wrong end date, and then patients had to go through the whole extension process again. When you call EDD to confirm they received your extension, also ask them what the new end date is showing in their system.

•That's a great point! My doctor did tell me the new end date (June 5th, 2025), so I'll make sure that matches what EDD has on file when I call them. Thank you!

Also, just to clarify since I see some confusion in the thread - your pregnancy disability can transition to Paid Family Leave (PFL) after you recover from childbirth. That's a separate benefit that gives you time to bond with your baby. You'll need to file a new claim for that when your disability ends. The standard is up to 8 weeks of pregnancy disability after delivery for vaginal births (longer for C-sections), then up to 8 weeks of PFL for bonding. Just something to keep in mind for future planning!

•Thank you for mentioning this! I've already delivered (had my baby 6 weeks ago), and the extension is because I'm still having blood pressure issues postpartum. I was planning to apply for PFL once my disability ends, so this is a good reminder that I'll need to file a separate claim for that.
