EDD SDI extension after pregnancy: Haven't been paid since Jan - still eligible?
I started my pregnancy disability leave on November 10th, 2024 and gave birth on December 12th. I was initially supposed to return to work on January 24th, 2025, but developed postpartum complications that required my doctor to extend my disability. My doctor provided notes extending first to February 7th and now until March 5th. I've submitted all required medical documentation to EDD, but my payments completely stopped after January 25th. It's been almost three weeks with no payments! I've spent HOURS trying to get through to EDD with no luck. Can anyone tell me if I'm still eligible for SDI benefits during these medical extensions? Or does pregnancy disability have some kind of maximum timeframe that I've exceeded? I received payments for about 4 weeks before birth and 6 weeks after, but nothing since then despite being officially on disability extension. Bills are piling up and I'm getting really worried. Any advice would be so appreciated!

Yes, you're still eligible! Pregnancy disability transitions to regular SDI when you have complications after the standard recovery period. The standard is 4 weeks before birth and 6-8 weeks after (depending on delivery type). After that, it's considered regular disability if you can't work for medical reasons. Your doctor needs to certify that you have a disability separate from normal pregnancy recovery. It sounds like you've done this correctly by submitting the medical documentation. The issue is probably just processing delays at EDD - they're notoriously slow with claim transitions. Keep certifying for benefits every two weeks while you wait for them to process your extension. The payments will eventually come through retroactively.

•Thank you so much for explaining this! That makes me feel a bit better. Do you know if there's anything specific I should do to make sure they process the transition correctly? I've been certifying regularly but I'm worried something is wrong with my claim.

the same thing happened to me last year!!! i had a csection then got a really bad infection and my dr extended my leave by 5 weeks. edd stopped paying me too and i freaked out. turns out they have to like process the extension as a seperate claim kinda? it took them like 3 weeks to start paying me again but they DID backpay everything i was owed. just keep certifying every 2 weeks!

•This isn't entirely accurate. While you do continue certifying, pregnancy disability and regular SDI are actually part of the same program. What happens is they need to validate the new medical condition, which requires additional processing time. The pregnancy portion has predetermined timeframes, but a new medical condition requires physician verification which creates the delay. But yes, they do backpay!

I had PPD after my baby and my payments stopped too when I got extended. It took EDD almost a MONTH to start paying me again. They're so slow!!! Did you call them yet?

•I've tried calling at least 15 times but I can never get through to an actual person. I either get disconnected or told to call back later. It's beyond frustrating, especially when I need to know if my family will have money for rent next month.

I work in HR and deal with this often. Here's what's happening: Your claim is transitioning from pregnancy disability (which has predetermined time periods) to a standard disability claim. This requires additional review, which is causing the delay. What you need to do: 1. Make sure you've completed Form DE 2501 (Notice of Continued Claim) with your new disability information 2. Verify your doctor completed the ongoing certification with the new diagnosis codes 3. Continue certifying for benefits through SDI Online every two weeks 4. Contact EDD directly to check your claim status The good news is that you ARE still eligible. The payments should eventually be made retroactively once the extension is processed. The standard pregnancy disability period (4 weeks pre-birth and 6-8 weeks post-birth) transitions into regular SDI when medically necessary.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I've definitely done points 1-3, but I'm struggling with #4. I can't seem to get through to anyone at EDD. I've tried calling multiple times at different hours but no luck.

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to EDD? I was in a similar situation last month and was going crazy trying to reach someone. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd When I finally spoke with an EDD representative, they told me my claim had a flag on it that needed manual review because of the transition from pregnancy disability to regular SDI. They fixed it right away once I actually talked to someone. Definitely worth trying!

•is that service legit? i'm always worried about these things being scams

•Yes, it's legitimate. They don't access your EDD account or ask for any personal information besides your phone number. They just connect you with EDD faster than you could on your own. They use a system that basically keeps dialing for you. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! They ALWAYS do this transition garbage. My sister had her baby in October and then developed severe postpartum anxiety. They stopped paying her for SIX WEEKS while they "processed" her paperwork even though her doctor sent everything on time!!! The problem is that pregnancy disability and regular disability are handled by different departments in their outdated system and they DON'T COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER!!! My sister couldn't pay her rent on time and got charged late fees. When she finally got through to someone, they told her "sorry for the inconvenience" like it's just a minor annoyance and not putting families at risk of HOMELESSNESS!!!! The system is designed to make you give up!!!

•That sounds absolutely terrifying. I'm already worried about making rent next month. Did they eventually pay your sister everything she was owed?

•Yes, she eventually got ALL the back pay but only after getting through to a supervisor who "expedited" the claim. The regular agents either couldn't or wouldn't help. They do this on purpose to save money hoping people will give up!!

To clarify a few things based on the other comments: 1. You are still eligible for disability benefits beyond the standard pregnancy recovery period if you have qualifying medical complications. The California SDI program allows for this. 2. The delay is because EDD needs to process this as a continued claim with a new medical condition, rather than the standard pregnancy recovery. 3. Your payments will be backdated once approved, so you'll receive everything you're owed. 4. The most important thing is to make sure all documentation is submitted properly. Double-check that your doctor clearly indicated this is for a condition beyond normal pregnancy recovery. 5. Contacting EDD directly is your best option to resolve this quickly. If you can't get through by phone, you might try visiting an EDD office in person if possible. Many new mothers experience this same issue, so you're not alone. The system does work, but unfortunately it can be slow during these transitions.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. I think I'll try calling again tomorrow morning right when they open. My doctor definitely specified that this is for postpartum complications beyond normal recovery, so hopefully that part is clear in their system.

My friend had her claim stop for almost a month after pregnancy too! But then she got all the money at once. EDD is just REALLY SLOW with paperwork.

Hi there, I had my baby last year and went through something similar. What helped me was sending a message through the SDI Online portal - go to Contact Us and select "Where is my payment?" as the subject. I got a response within 5 days and they fixed my claim. Sometimes their messaging system works better than calling. Just make sure to mention you've submitted all the medical documentation already.

•I'll try that today! I didn't realize the messaging system might be faster. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning after using Claimyr (thanks for the recommendation). They confirmed my extension is valid but it was sitting in a review queue. The agent manually moved it forward and said I should see payments within 3-5 business days for all back weeks. She also said they've been experiencing higher than normal volumes of claims in January/February which is causing delays. Just wanted to update in case anyone else has this issue!

•Great to hear! This is exactly why it's so important to keep following up. Sometimes claims just need a little push from a representative to move them along in the system.

I'm going through almost the exact same situation right now! Had my baby in November and developed complications that required an extension past my original return date. My payments stopped in mid-January too and I've been panicking about bills. Reading through these comments gives me hope that this is just a processing issue and not something wrong with my claim. I'm definitely going to try the SDI Online messaging system that Noah mentioned - seems like it might be faster than trying to call. And if that doesn't work, I'll look into Claimyr. It's so frustrating that we have to jump through all these hoops when we're already dealing with medical issues and new babies, but at least it sounds like the back pay does eventually come through. Thank you for posting this - you've helped more people than just yourself by sharing your experience!

•I'm so sorry you're going through this too! It's such a stressful situation when you're already dealing with postpartum complications and a new baby. Based on what everyone has shared here, it really does seem like this is a common processing delay rather than an actual eligibility issue. The messaging system through SDI Online sounds like a great first step - much less frustrating than trying to call repeatedly. And if you do end up needing to call, at least now we know about services like Claimyr that can help get through faster. Hang in there - it sounds like the back pay will come through once they process everything properly. This whole thread has been so helpful for understanding that we're not alone in this situation!

I'm so glad you posted this question - I'm in a very similar situation and was starting to panic that something was seriously wrong with my claim! I had my baby in late November and also developed postpartum complications that required my doctor to extend my leave. My payments stopped around the same time as yours in late January. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly reassuring. It sounds like this processing delay during the transition from pregnancy disability to regular SDI is unfortunately very common, but the good news is that everyone seems to eventually get their back pay once EDD processes everything. I'm going to try the SDI Online messaging system first thing tomorrow morning, and if that doesn't work within a week, I'll definitely look into using Claimyr to get through to an actual person. It's so frustrating that we have to deal with this additional stress when we're already managing new babies and medical recovery, but at least now I know I'm not alone and that there are ways to move things along. Thank you for sharing your experience - this thread is going to help so many new moms who are dealing with the same issue!

The messaging system through SDI Online seems like a really good first step - less time spent on hold and you have a written record of your inquiry. From what everyone has shared, it sounds like the key is just being persistent and not giving up. The system may be slow, but it does seem to work eventually. Definitely keep certifying every two weeks while you wait - that seems to be really important for getting the back pay once everything gets processed. Wishing you the best of luck getting this resolved quickly! Let us know how the messaging system works out for you.

I'm dealing with this exact same situation and it's so reassuring to see I'm not alone! I had my baby in December and developed complications that extended my leave, but my SDI payments stopped in late January too. I've been so stressed thinking something was wrong with my claim. This thread has been incredibly helpful - especially learning about the messaging system through SDI Online and services like Claimyr if calling doesn't work. It sounds like this processing delay during the transition from pregnancy disability to regular SDI is unfortunately very common, but the good news is everyone seems to eventually get their back pay. I'm going to try messaging through the portal first thing tomorrow. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and advice - it's such a relief to know this is a system issue and not something I did wrong. Being a new mom is hard enough without worrying about whether you can pay rent!

•I'm so sorry you're going through this stress too! It really is overwhelming when you're already adjusting to life with a new baby and dealing with medical complications. This whole thread has been such a lifesaver - I had no idea this processing delay was so common with the transition from pregnancy disability to regular SDI. The messaging system through SDI Online definitely seems like the best first step since so many people have had success with it. And it's good to know about backup options like Claimyr if we need them. The most important thing I've learned from everyone here is to keep certifying every two weeks no matter what, since that seems crucial for getting the back pay once everything gets sorted out. You're absolutely right that being a new mom is hard enough without this financial stress! Hang in there - based on everyone's experiences, it sounds like the payments will come through once EDD processes everything properly. Please update us on how the messaging system works for you!

I'm currently experiencing this exact same issue and this thread has been such a huge help! I had my baby in early December and developed postpartum complications that required extending my leave beyond the standard recovery period. My SDI payments also stopped in late January and I've been really worried about what's happening with my claim. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been so reassuring - it sounds like this processing delay when transitioning from pregnancy disability to regular SDI is unfortunately very common. I had no idea that EDD essentially treats the extension as a new claim that requires additional review and verification. I'm definitely going to try the SDI Online messaging system first since several people have had good results with that approach. It seems much more manageable than spending hours trying to get through on the phone. And if that doesn't work, I'll look into Claimyr to get connected to an actual representative. The most important thing I've learned from this discussion is to keep certifying every two weeks no matter what - that seems crucial for ensuring you get all the back pay once everything is processed. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and advice. It's such a relief to know this is a system processing issue and not something wrong with our claims!

•I'm so glad this thread is helping so many new moms going through the same frustrating situation! It really shows how widespread this processing issue is when transitioning from pregnancy disability to regular SDI. You're absolutely right about continuing to certify every two weeks - that seems to be the most consistent advice from everyone who has successfully gotten their back pay. The SDI Online messaging system really does seem like the best first approach since you avoid the phone call nightmare and have everything documented. And knowing about Claimyr as a backup option takes away some of the anxiety about potentially never getting through to a real person. What's been most reassuring to me is seeing that literally everyone who stuck with it eventually got their full back pay, even when the delays were really scary. It's such an awful system that puts new families through this stress when we're already dealing with so much, but at least we know it does work eventually if we're persistent. Wishing you the best with getting this resolved quickly! Please keep us updated on how the messaging system works out for you.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now and this thread has been a lifesaver! Had my baby in late November, developed complications requiring an extension, and my payments stopped in January too. I was starting to panic that I'd done something wrong with my paperwork. It's so helpful to understand that this is actually a common processing delay when EDD transitions your claim from pregnancy disability to regular SDI. I had no idea they essentially treat it as a new claim requiring additional medical review - that explains the frustrating gap in payments. Based on everyone's advice here, I'm going to try the SDI Online messaging system first thing Monday morning. It sounds way less stressful than the endless phone calls. And it's reassuring to know about Claimyr as a backup option if needed. The most important takeaway for me is to keep certifying every two weeks no matter what - seems like that's crucial for getting the full back pay once everything processes. Thank you all for sharing your experiences. Being a new mom is overwhelming enough without worrying about basic bills!

•I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too - the timing is exactly the same as so many of us! It's incredible how common this issue seems to be. What really stands out to me from reading everyone's experiences is that while the system is frustrating and slow, it does eventually work out with the back pay intact. The SDI Online messaging approach seems like such a smart strategy - you get documentation of your inquiry and avoid the phone call stress. I think I'm going to try that route too based on everyone's positive experiences with it. It's also comforting to know that continuing to certify every two weeks is so important - at least there's something concrete we can do while waiting for EDD to process everything. This whole thread has really shown me that we're not alone in this struggle and that persistence does pay off eventually. Hang in there!
