Postpartum depression extended SDI payments delayed: 3 weeks no money after extension approval

I'm at my wits' end with this SDI extension situation! I've been on pregnancy disability for the max 4 weeks before birth + 6 weeks after (c-section), but have been struggling with severe postpartum depression. My doctor submitted paperwork for an extension, which has been granted TWICE according to my SDI Online account. The claim dates show updated end dates extending my benefits through April 2025, but I haven't received ANY payments for the past 3 weeks (since my original SDI period ended). I got a notification in my SDI Online inbox saying "New Medical Information Received" so I know they have my doctor's documentation. My claim status shows "Paid" for previous periods but nothing for these extension weeks. Do I need to re-certify somehow? File additional paperwork? I've got bills stacking up and a newborn to care for while barely functioning. Has anyone dealt with payment delays after SDI extensions for postpartum mental health issues? I'm so desperate I'm considering going back to work even though my doctor says I'm not ready.

Yes, you need to continue certifying for benefits during the extension period. Even though your claim shows as approved with the new end date, you still have to submit certification forms for each two-week period. Check your SDI Online account under the "Forms" section - there should be new DE 2501 Continued Claim forms for you to complete for each period. If you don't see them, call EDD immediately because there might be a technical issue with your account.

Thank you so much! I just checked and you're right - there ARE certification forms waiting that I didn't see before. I feel so stupid. I thought since it was an extension of the same claim I wouldn't need to certify again. Going to fill those out right now.

i had the exact same thing happen with my ppd extension last year! took me 5 weeks to figure out i had to keep certifying lol. the website is so confusing and nobody tells you anything!

Thanks for sharing this - makes me feel less alone! Did you get backpay for the weeks you missed certifying once you figured it out?

I went through something similar with my SDI extension for postpartum anxiety. The EDD system is TERRIBLE about explaining the process. Even after you submit those certification forms, it might take 10-14 days to actually receive payment. If you're really struggling financially, make sure to tell your doctor - sometimes they can mark your case as financially urgent which can speed things up.

also make sure your doctor used the right codes on the extension paperwork! my first extension was denied because they used a pregnancy code instead of a mental health code, had to resubmit everything and lost weeks of benefits

I didn't know about the financial urgency option! I'll definitely call my doctor tomorrow. And thanks @casual_commenter for the tip about codes - I'll check with my doctor about that too.

If you've already submitted those certification forms and still don't receive payment within a week, you should definitely contact EDD directly. When I had my SDI extension for postpartum complications in July, I found that using Claimyr (claimyr.com) was the only way I could actually reach a human at EDD. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. It got me connected to an actual agent who fixed my extension payment issue on the spot instead of waiting weeks for someone to review my case.

I've never heard of this service before, but I'm definitely keeping this as a backup option if my payments don't start soon after certifying. Thanks for the tip!

The same thing happened to me and it took FOREVER to get my money! EDD disability is a joke when it comes to extensions. They make the process intentionally complicated and nobody tells you what to do. I bet they're hoping people just give up and go back to work so they don't have to pay.

While I understand your frustration, the extension process actually follows the same certification requirements as the original claim - it's just not communicated well. The system isn't designed to trick people; it's just outdated and poorly explained. I work in HR and see this confusion all the time with employees on leave.

Maybe not INTENTIONALLY complicated but the effect is the same. People suffer while waiting for money they're entitled to because the system is broken.

Just want to add an important detail - make sure when you certify that you're marking that you were unable to work for each day of the period. I made the mistake of accidentally indicating I could work on weekends (because I misunderstood the question), and it delayed my postpartum extension payments by almost a month while they investigated. Also check if your address is up to date in the system - sometimes they mail physical checks instead of direct deposit for extension periods even if you had direct deposit before.

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't even think about the work ability question. And great point about the address - we actually moved to a bigger place right before the baby came so I'll double check that's updated.

If you certified today, you should see payments in about 5-7 business days if everything goes smoothly. For my PPD extension last year it took exactly 6 days for each payment to process after certification. But if it goes longer than 10 days, definitely call them - sometimes extensions get flagged for extra review even when all documentation is in order.

That's good to know about the timing. I'll set a reminder to follow up if I don't see anything by next Friday. I'm just relieved to know what the issue was!

anyone else notice how the first ppd extension goes thru easy but if u need a second one they make it super hard?? my doctor had to submit the paperwork 3 times for my second extension!!

That's because first extensions are reviewed regularly, while second extensions often trigger additional medical review since they exceed standard recovery periods. It's not them making it harder intentionally; the medical review team just has different documentation requirements that aren't always communicated to doctors.

UPDATE: I certified for the missed periods and got an email saying my payment was processed! Should be in my account in 1-2 days. Thanks everyone for your help - I would've been lost without this advice.

So happy to hear you got it sorted out! This thread will be really helpful for other moms going through the same confusion. The certification requirement for extensions really should be explained better when they approve them. Hope your recovery goes smoothly from here!
