SDI extension for partial permanent disability not showing up online - last payment marked 'final' too early
I'm completely stressed about my disability extension situation. I've been on SDI for about 12 weeks due to a back injury that happened at work (L4-L5 herniation). My original claim was approved without issues, and my doctor initially estimated I'd return to work on February 28, 2025. But at my latest appointment, he diagnosed me with partial permanent disability and filed an extension for another 8 weeks. He submitted all the paperwork on January 15th. It's been almost 3 weeks since he submitted the extension paperwork, but when I check my SDI Online account, it's still showing my original return-to-work date with no update about the extension. Even worse, my last payment (which arrived Jan 18) was labeled as "FINAL PAYMENT" in the system! This makes no sense since my original disability period isn't even over yet, let alone the extension. Has anyone dealt with extensions for PPD specifically? Why would they mark my last payment as final when my doctor has certified I need more time? I've tried calling EDD about 30 times in the past week but can't get through. I'm worried about paying my mortgage next month if this doesn't get sorted out quickly.

yep this happened to my husband last summer. the doctor had sent in extension papers but EDD marked the last payment as final anyway. turns out the Dr sent the form to the wrong department or something. you should double check with your doctor's office that they sent it correctly. it was a huge mess for us!!

•Thanks for the response. Did your husband have to resubmit the paperwork or did EDD eventually find it? I'll call my doctor's office tomorrow to verify, but I'm worried since it's been almost 3 weeks already.

The extension process for PPD is different from regular SDI extensions. With Partial Permanent Disability, the extension needs to be properly coded in the system. What likely happened is that your doctor submitted the extension paperwork, but it either hasn't been processed yet or wasn't correctly identified as a PPD extension. You need to verify a few things: 1. Make sure your doctor used form DE 2525XX specifically (the extension form) rather than submitting a new DE 2501 claim. 2. Confirm the doctor indicated Partial Permanent Disability status on the form. 3. Check that they included the proper disability code for your specific condition. The "final payment" notification often automatically triggers when approaching the originally estimated return date, regardless of extension status. Don't panic about this label - it's a system limitation. If your doctor confirms everything was submitted correctly, you'll need to speak directly with an EDD representative to have them manually review the extension documentation and update your claim status.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I didn't realize there was a specific extension form (DE 2525XX). I'll definitely ask my doctor which form they used when I call tomorrow. I'm also going to try calling EDD again first thing in the morning.

I had a similar issue with my PPD extension last year. The key is to make sure your doctor specifically coded it as a PPD extension rather than just a regular extension. There's a specific code they need to use on the form. In my case, the claims examiner told me they have a separate review process for PPD extensions because they can potentially last longer than standard disability. As for the "final payment" notice - this is actually a common glitch in their system. It automatically marks payments as final when approaching your original return-to-work date until a human processor updates the extension in the system. Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual EDD representative. I was in the same boat trying to call dozens of times with no luck. Claimyr got me connected to an actual person at EDD in about 20 minutes who could see my extension paperwork was in the system but hadn't been processed yet. They expedited it for me. You can check them out at claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd

•It worked for me when I was desperate after trying for a week on my own. The point is they connect you with an actual EDD rep who can check on your specific claim status. For extensions especially, sometimes you need a human to manually review what's happening. Otherwise you're just looking at automated messages on the portal.

YOU NEED TO FILE A NEW CLAIM!!! I got caught in the same trap last year. Everyone kept telling me "just wait for the extension to process" but after 6 WEEKS of nothing I finally talked to a supervisor who told me that with PPD YOU HAVE TO FILE A COMPLETELY NEW CLAIM because it's considered a new disability period!!! The whole system is DESIGNED TO DENY YOU BENEFITS by making it confusing. Your doctor probably thought they were doing the right thing but the EDD rules are DELIBERATELY CONFUSING. Call them immediately and demand to speak to a supervisor who understands PPD claims!!

•This is incorrect information and could cause problems with the claim. For PPD (Partial Permanent Disability), you do NOT file a new claim. The correct procedure is for the doctor to file an extension using form DE 2525XX. Filing a new claim for the same condition would likely result in a denial due to duplicate claims rules. What may have happened in your specific case is that your original claim reached its maximum benefit period (52 weeks), in which case a new claim might be necessary under certain circumstances. But for a standard PPD extension within the benefit year, the extension form is the proper process.

•That's NOT what the supervisor told me!! Maybe things are different for different TYPES of disabilities?? Mine was for severe carpal tunnel that turned into PPD after surgery didn't fully fix it. The supervisor SPECIFICALLY told me I needed a new claim with a new claim number because it was changing from temporary to permanent disability. Why would they tell me that if it wasn't true???

•This is getting confusing. Now I don't know what to do. Should I tell my doctor to submit a new claim or just wait for the extension to process? This is so frustrating!

To clarify for everyone: There's an important distinction here. For California SDI, a PPD (Partial Permanent Disability) extension within the benefit year (first 52 weeks) is handled by the doctor submitting form DE 2525XX. You do NOT need to file a new claim during this period. However, if you've exhausted your 52-week benefit period, then the process changes. At that point, you may need to transition to a different program, possibly requiring a new application. The original poster mentioned being only 12 weeks into their claim, so they are definitely still within the benefit year and just need the extension to be properly processed. Regarding the "final payment" notification - this is a known system limitation. The SDI Online system automatically generates this message when approaching the originally estimated return-to-work date, even if an extension is in process. Only after the extension is manually approved by a claims examiner will this update in the system.

•Thank you for clarifying! This makes so much more sense now. Since I'm only 12 weeks in, I just need to make sure the extension was properly submitted. I'll keep trying to reach EDD to verify they received it.

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD this morning after 2 hours of calling! The representative confirmed they received my doctor's extension paperwork but it's in a processing backlog. She said the "final payment" label was automatically generated by their system because it reached my original return-to-work date, but it doesn't mean my benefits are actually terminated. She manually added a note to my claim and said I should see the extension reflected in my account within 7-10 business days. Fingers crossed it actually happens! Thanks everyone for your help.

•Great news! Glad you were able to get through. This is exactly what happened with my claim too - it's just their automated system that isn't smart enough to recognize pending extensions. Make sure to keep an eye on your account and if nothing changes in 10 days, call again.

Has anyone had their doctor submit extension papers but then EDD denies it? I'm in a similar situation but worried they'll say no even though my doctor says I need more time...

•Extensions can be denied if the medical documentation doesn't adequately support the need for continued disability. Make sure your doctor provides detailed information about why you cannot return to your regular work duties. For PPD specifically, they need to document the permanent limitations and ongoing treatment plan. If denied, you have the right to appeal within 30 days of the denial notice.
