EDD disability extension payment delays - stuck in limbo since doctor submitted new end date
I'm so stressed out right now! My disability claim was originally supposed to end on 6/12, but my condition got worse and my doctor extended it until 8/19. I completed my portion of the extension paperwork right away, and my doctor submitted his certification (I can see it was received by EDD on 6/25). But it's now been almost THREE WEEKS and I haven't received ANY payments since my last one on 6/11. I've tried calling EDD at least 20 times but either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. I've sent two messages through the SDI Online portal but no response. Bills are piling up and I'm getting desperate. Has anyone dealt with an extension delay like this? How did you finally get someone to process your extension? Any advice would be so appreciated!

Unfortunately this is pretty common with extensions. EDD's system treats them almost like new claims and puts them through verification again. When this happened to me last year, it took about 4 weeks before my payments started up again. The most frustrating part was that there wasn't actually any problem, just delay. Keep certifying even though you're not getting paid!

•4 WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! I have rent due next week and no savings left. Do you know if there's any way to speed things up or at least talk to a human being??

•It's so frustrating! Have you had any luck reaching someone on the phone?

I dealt with this exact situation in February. Extensions often create a processing backlog in their system. Here's what you need to do: 1. Keep certifying for benefits even if payments aren't coming through 2. Check your SDI Online account daily for any new messages or status changes 3. Make sure your doctor used the correct form (DE 2525XX) for the extension 4. If your doctor's office submitted via fax, ask them for the confirmation page 5. Try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM If your extension was properly submitted on 6/25, you should start seeing payments by approximately 7/23 (assuming no other issues). The good news is that you'll receive ALL back payments once they process it.

•Thank you for the detailed response! I'll definitely keep certifying. My doctor's office said they submitted everything correctly, but I'll double-check about the form number. Do you think it's worth keeping trying to call, or should I just wait it out?

•It's definitely worth trying to call, especially if you're facing financial hardship. Getting through to a rep can speed things up considerably. The problem is just reaching someone. Be prepared to explain the situation clearly and have your claim number ready.

I went through this nightmare with my pregnancy disability extension last month. After two weeks of getting nowhere, I found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD agent in under 20 minutes. It costs money (which is frustrating when dealing with a government service), but I was desperate and it actually worked. The agent processed my extension while I was on the phone and my payments started the next day. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd

•I've never heard of this! Did you have to provide personal information to the service? I'm desperate enough to try it but a bit hesitant about security.

•I understand the concern! The service just connects you to EDD - they don't need your claim details or anything like that. You only give your personal info directly to the EDD agent when they get you through. It was honestly such a relief after days of failed calling.

Before my surgery i was on sdi for 3 months and then needed an extension for 6 more weeks. what i learned is that you cant call the regular disability number for extension issues. you have to call the sdi EXTENSION specific number which is different. the regular reps cant help with extension processing. try 855-342-3645 between 8:00-12:00, thats when i finally got through.

•Wait, there's a separate number for extensions?? No one ever told me that! I've been calling the main number this whole time. Thank you so much for sharing this - I'll try calling that number first thing tomorrow morning.

•I think there might be some confusion here. The 855-342-3645 number is for SDI general questions, not specifically for extensions. There isn't a dedicated extension processing line that I'm aware of. Extensions are handled by the same department, but they require additional processing time because they need to verify the continuing medical condition.

When this happened to me I sent multiple emails through the portal AND I contacted my state assembly member's office. Their constituent services team contacted EDD on my behalf, and suddenly my extension was processed within 48 hours. Don't underestimate how effective this can be - it's literally their job to help with state agency issues!

•This is a great suggestion I hadn't thought of! I just looked up my assembly member and I'm going to contact their office tomorrow. Did you just call their office directly?

•Yes, I called their local district office (not the Sacramento office) and explained my situation. They had me fill out a consent form so they could inquire about my case, and then they reached out to their EDD liaison. It was amazing how quickly things moved once they got involved!

i had the same problem last yr when my disability got extended for my back surgery recovery. my doctor submitted everything but payments just stopped. turns out EDD was waiting for some additional form they never told me about!!! you need to somehow get a human on the phone to check if there's a hidden issue with your claim. so frustrating!!

•Oh no, that's my fear - that there's some form or issue they haven't told me about! My SDI Online account doesn't show any pending forms or issues, but who knows what's happening behind the scenes. Did you eventually get all your back pay?

•yes eventually got all back pay but took almost 6 weeks total and lots of stress. when i finally reached someone they fixed it in like 5 minutes. the system is broken
