EDD SDI extension limbo - doctor not responding, can't reach agents to avoid payment gap
I'm in a weird situation with my disability extension and worried about a gap in payments. My current SDI claim has an end date of 8/28/2025, but my recovery is taking longer than expected. My doctor previously said he'd submit another extension, but now he's not answering my messages (it's been 6 days!). Last time I needed an extension (January), EDD automatically continued payments until the paperwork came through, but I'm not seeing any pending payments in my account now. I've called EDD maybe 15 times in the past three days and either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Is there still a way to email SDI directly? I remember during 2020-2021 there was some email address we could use, and they'd actually respond within a few days. I'm getting really nervous because my rent is due next week, and I have no idea if payments will continue while I'm waiting for my doctor to submit the extension paperwork. Any advice on how to handle this gap or reach someone at EDD would be so appreciated!

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent? It was a lifesaver for me last month when I was in a similar situation with my disability extension. The service connects you with an EDD rep usually within an hour instead of spending days trying to get through. Check out their website at claimyr.com or watch their demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd With your rent coming up, I'd say it's worth it to get a definitive answer about your payment status rather than stressing about whether the money will show up in time.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't heard of this service before. Did you actually get through to someone who could help with an extension issue? I'm desperate at this point so willing to try anything.

So the official rule is that disability benefits stop on the end date unless your doctor submits the extension paperwork. There's no automatic continuation - if that happened before, it was probably because your doctor submitted the paperwork right on time but it wasn't showing in your online account yet. You need to get your doctor to submit form DE 2525XX (Certification Extension). Unfortunately, there's no direct email for EDD anymore - they phased that out in mid-2022 when they updated their contact systems. Your options are: 1. Keep calling EDD (I know, frustrating) 2. Visit an EDD office in person if possible 3. Contact your doctor's office manager/supervisor about the urgency 4. See if you can get a different doctor to certify the extension if yours isn't responding If there's a gap, you can request retroactive payments once the extension is approved, but that doesn't help with your immediate rent situation.

I'm in nearly identical situation right NOW and am absolutely FURIOUS with the whole system!!! My doctor went on vacation without submitting my extension and my payments stopped immediately on the original end date. Been calling for TWO WEEKS and cant get through to anyone at EDD. It's criminal how they treat disabled people!!! They KNOW their phone system is broken and they DO NOTHING to fix it. I've been on disability for severe back injury and now I'm literally having panic attacks about paying my mortgage next month. Thanks California for adding mental health issues on top of my physical problems!!!

•I'm sorry you're going through this! Just to clarify one point - EDD isn't actually required to continue payments between the end date and when they receive extension paperwork. If that happened before for the original poster, it was likely just lucky timing with how their claim was processed. Extensions technically require new medical certification before payments can legally continue.

I work in HR and help employees with disability claims frequently. Just want to clarify a few things about SDI extensions: 1. There is no automatic continuation between claim periods. If you received payments after your end date previously, it was because either: - Your doctor submitted the extension paperwork before the end date - EDD processed the extension quickly after receiving it - There was a system error in your favor (rare but happens) 2. Regarding contacting EDD: The email system was discontinued in September 2022. Your current options are: - Phone (difficult but still primary contact method) - SDI Online messaging system (responses can take 7-10 business days) - In-person at an EDD office (bring all your claim paperwork) 3. Most important: Your doctor MUST submit form DE 2525XX for your extension. No amount of calling EDD will replace this requirement. Focus energy on getting your doctor to submit this ASAP. If there's a gap in payments, you will receive retroactive payments once the extension is approved, but you need to be prepared for that temporary gap.

•The SDI Online messaging system is a joke tho... I sent 3 messages over 2 weeks and never got a single response before giving up and just calling 100 times

Update: I finally got through to an EDD agent this morning after calling right when they opened at 8:00. The agent confirmed what several of you said - there is no automatic continuation, and my doctor absolutely needs to submit the extension paperwork. She said once they receive that paperwork, they can backdate payments to avoid a gap. The good news is my doctor finally responded to my messages and said the office will submit the extension form today. The EDD agent said I should see it reflected in my account within 7-10 days after they receive it. Fingers crossed everything works out before rent is due! And thank you all for the advice and support.

•That's great news! Just a tip for next time - I set a calendar reminder 2 weeks before my disability end date specifically to start bugging my doctor about extension paperwork. Learned that lesson the hard way after being in your exact situation last year!

•Yeah I'm checking with some family members as backup, just in case the timing doesn't work out. Really hope I don't have to go that route though.

ok but why isnt anyone talking about how doctors offices are THE WORST about this paperwork?? my dr makes me schedule a whole appointment ($$) just to get extension paperwork filled out which is so stupid when im already disabled and its hard to even get to appointments! then they take forever to actually submit it. edd system is broken but so is the medical side!!

•This is actually a great point. Doctors' offices handle disability paperwork very differently. Some submit extension forms easily with just a phone call, while others require full exams before extending disability. It's partly because they're liable for certifying your condition still exists and prevents work. For anyone reading this in the future: ask your doctor upfront about their disability extension policy when you first go on disability. Some offices have dedicated staff for disability paperwork, while others put the entire burden on the doctor who might be seeing 25+ patients daily.

•That's good insider info! I've also heard Wednesdays are sometimes better than Mondays for getting through on the phone lines.
