EDD SDI payment delay - filed 6 weeks ago and still nothing

I'm getting really worried about my disability claim. I submitted my portion through SDI Online back on January 15th and my doctor submitted their certification about a week later (January 22nd). It's now been almost 6 weeks and I still haven't received any payment or approval notification. My online account just shows 'claim received' with no other updates. I keep getting those generic waiting period notices but nothing else. I've tried calling the main EDD number dozens of times but either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. How am I supposed to know if I'm even approved? My savings are completely drained and I've got medical bills piling up plus rent due next week. I can't even afford my prescription refills at this point. Does anyone know if there's a direct number I can call to actually speak with someone? Or how to figure out if my claim is approved/denied? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm seriously stressing out here.

Unfortunately this is classic EDD SDI right now. They're processing claims really slowly since their system upgrade last month. My husband's claim took 8 weeks to get the first payment! The general number (1-800-480-3287) is basically useless because they're so backed up. You might try calling right when they open at 8:00am, but honestly good luck getting through. To check if you're approved, log into your SDI Online account and look for a "Claim Summary" section. If it shows a Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA), then you're approved. If it just says "Pending" you're still in processing. Did you have any wage issues or did you work for multiple employers last year? That can slow things down too.

Thanks for the info. I checked my account again and it just says "pending review" with no weekly benefit amount showing. I only had one employer last year and have been there for 3 years, so I don't think that's the issue. I've tried calling at 8am sharp but can never get through. It's so frustrating because I have no idea if there's something wrong with my claim or if they just haven't gotten to it yet.

my claim took like 10 weeks to process back in november!!!!! edd is a JOKE seriously. they expect us to pay our bills with what??? good vibes??? lol. don't even bother with the main number its totally useless

Sadly this is true. The system wasn't designed to handle the current volume of claims. The online system shows "pending" for almost everyone for weeks, even when there are no issues with the claim. It's a mess.

I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD last month when I was in the same situation. They basically call EDD for you and then connect you when they get an agent. I was skeptical but it worked - they got me through in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I got through, I found out my doctor had submitted the wrong code on my medical certification form which was holding everything up. They fixed it while I was on the phone and my payment was processed 3 days later. Might be worth checking if there's some simple issue holding up your claim too.

Oh wow, I didn't know that kind of service existed. I'll definitely check out that video. At this point I'd try anything to get through to a real person. Did they tell you over the phone once they resolved the issue? Or did you just have to keep checking your account?

So here's the thing about EDD disability that nobody tells you - there's actually a specific timeframe they're supposed to process claims in (14 days) but they NEVER hit it anymore. I filed in December and didn't get paid until February. The waiting period is a totally different thing from processing time. The waiting period is the first 7 days of your disability that they never pay for, but processing time is how long EDD takes to review your claim. You can also try contacting your state assembly member's office. I did this after week 7 and miraculously my claim was suddenly processed three days after their office contacted EDD on my behalf. Just Google "California state assembly member [your city]" and you'll find your rep. Their offices deal with EDD issues all day long.

yep this is good advice! my sister works for an assembly member and they help ppl with edd problems all day every day. they have special contacts at edd that regular people dont have access to.

i had same problem last month!!! i called for weeks and finally got through to someone who told me my doctor didn't fill out part of the medical form correctly!!! all that time waiting and nobody bothered to contact me or my doctor to fix it. make sure your doctor completed EVERY field on the form...if they left ANYTHING blank it will delay your claim but edd doesn't tell you about it

That's infuriating! I have no idea if my doctor's form is complete, and there's no way for me to check that online. I'll try calling their office tomorrow to see if EDD has contacted them about any issues. Thanks for the heads up.

The EDD disability system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and has been for years. I had to wait 9 weeks for my pregnancy disability last year while burning through my savings. Then they had the nerve to tell me there was "no backlog" when I finally got through. My advice? Call your state representatives, file a formal complaint, and keep detailed records of all your attempts to contact them. The only thing that worked for me was when I mentioned filing a complaint with the state oversight committee - suddenly my claim was processed in 48 hours. The system is designed to make you give up.

This is unfortunately accurate. The system is overwhelmed and underfunded. I've found that getting through to an actual claims specialist (not just a frontline rep) is key. They have the authority to push claims through when there are no real issues. When you do get through, always ask to speak with a claims specialist.

You might also want to check if there's an issue with your identity verification. EDD implemented stricter verification requirements in 2024, and sometimes claims get held up because they need additional documentation. Did you receive any requests for identity verification documents in your online portal or by mail? Sometimes these notices get missed and your claim just sits in limbo. Another thing to check - did you file for UI benefits at any point in the 18 months before filing for disability? If so, they sometimes need to manually adjust your benefit calculations which adds delays.

I don't see any requests for identity verification in my online portal, but I'll double check my mail to make sure I didn't miss anything. I did receive unemployment for about 3 months in early 2023 before going back to work. Maybe that's causing some issues? I wish they would at least tell me if something was wrong instead of just leaving me in the dark.

After reading all these comments, it sounds like you have several potential issues that could be causing the delay: 1. The general backlog (most likely) 2. A possible incomplete physician certification 3. Your previous UI claim potentially complicating benefit calculations 4. Possible missing identity verification The fastest way to resolve this is definitely getting through to an actual claims specialist who can look at your file. They can tell you exactly what's happening and often fix issues on the spot. The standard phone lines are virtually impossible right now, so either try the Claimyr service I mentioned, contact your assembly member, or try calling the alternate number (833-978-2511) which sometimes has shorter wait times. Once you get your claim approved, the good news is that you'll receive all back payments from your disability start date (minus the 7-day waiting period). So even though it's incredibly stressful waiting, you will eventually get the full amount you're entitled to.

Thank you so much for breaking this down. I'm going to try that alternate number tomorrow morning, and if that doesn't work, I'll try the Claimyr service. I really appreciate everyone's help and advice - this has been such a stressful experience. I'll update once I hopefully get some answers!
