SDI claim stuck in limbo after back surgery - no updates for 6 weeks!
I had a spinal fusion surgery on February 3rd and submitted my SDI claim the next day with all my medical documentation. It's now been nearly 6 weeks and my claim is still showing as "pending review" with no updates whatsoever. My doctor's office confirmed they submitted the medical certification form (DE 2501) right away and it shows as received in the system. I've tried calling the EDD disability phone number at least 20 times over the past three weeks but either get disconnected or wait on hold for 2+ hours until the office closes. I've also sent three messages through the SDI Online portal with zero response. My savings are completely drained and I'm starting to panic about April rent. My doctor says I can't return to work for at least another month (I do construction). Has anyone else experienced ridiculous delays like this? Is there a secret phone number or some way to actually speak to a human at EDD? This is my first time on disability and I'm completely lost.

welcome to edd hell lol. i waited 8 weeks for my claim last summer (broken ankle) and didn't get a PENNY until i finally reached someone on the phone. the online system is basically useless for anything beyond filing initially. keep calling right when they open at 8am that's ur best chance

•Thanks for the response. So frustrating! Did you just keep calling the main number over and over? I've tried the 8am thing twice but just got the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and it disconnected me.

Sorry you're dealing with this. I've gone through the SDI process three times in recent years, and unfortunately delays are common, but 6 weeks without any update is excessive. A few things to check: 1. Log into SDI Online and verify if there are any flags on your claim that need attention. Sometimes there are issues they never notify you about. 2. Check if your employer's information is correct on the claim. A typo in the company name or address can cause delays. 3. Make sure your doctor used the correct diagnosis code on the medical certification form. Mismatched codes between your claim and their certification can cause holds. 4. If you haven't already, use the Contact EDD function on SDI Online to specifically ask for a status update, mentioning the financial hardship the delay is causing. For what it's worth, SDI backpay should eventually cover from the 8th day after your disability began (after the 7-day waiting period), but I know that doesn't help with immediate bills.

•Thanks for the detailed advice. I double-checked everything in the portal and there are no flags or issues showing. All the employer info looks correct, and my doctor confirmed they used the right codes. I've sent messages through the Contact EDD function but haven't received any responses. It feels like my claim is just sitting in digital limbo.

This happened to me too!!! My claim sat for 7 weeks after shoulder surgery and I almost got evicted. EDD is THE WORST agency ever!!! They don't care at all about disabled people. 😡😡😡

I was in a similar situation last year with my pregnancy disability claim. After weeks of frustration, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours or getting disconnected. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd When I finally got through, I found out my claim had a "medical certification discrepancy" flag that wasn't visible in the online portal. The rep was able to clear it on the spot and my payments started processing the next day. For claims stuck this long, sometimes you need to speak with someone who can actually look at the internal notes.

•I've never heard of this service but at this point I'll try anything. Did they actually resolve your issue or just connect you to EDD? I'm desperate to talk to a real person who can tell me what's going on.

•They don't resolve the issue themselves - they just connect you to an actual EDD representative (which is the hard part). Once I was connected, the EDD rep handled everything. In my case, there was a discrepancy in the medical records that wasn't showing up in my online account, and the rep fixed it immediately.

Have you checked if your claim is assigned a caseworker yet? Sometimes that info is buried in your account details. Also – did you get any kind of confirmation number when your doctor submitted the certification? I've been through this 3 times (chronic condition) and the medical certification is almost ALWAYS where the holdup is, even when the doctor swears they sent it. EDD doesn't always register it properly in their system. The system is totally broken tbh. I'm sorry you're dealing with this while recovering from surgery. The stress definitely doesn't help the healing process. 😞

•I'm not sure how to check if a caseworker is assigned - where would I look for that? And yes, my doctor's office showed me confirmation that the certification was received on Feb 5th. I think you're right about the system being broken. It's crazy that they leave people without income for so long while recovering.

I had almost the exact situation (different surgery though) in January. Try calling your local Assembly member's office! They have EDD liaisons who can help. I called mine after 5 weeks of waiting, and they contacted EDD on my behalf. My claim was processed within 3 days after that. Google "California State Assembly member" plus your city to find yours. Their constituent services are amazing for this kind of stuff.

•This is brilliant advice, thank you! I didn't even think about contacting my Assembly member. I'll try this tomorrow morning.

I spent 20 years working with the CA disability system (before retiring) and here's what most people don't know: sometimes claims get "stuck" in the system because of a simple technical flag that no one is addressing. Your claim is likely sitting in someone's work queue but not being prioritized. The online messages rarely get prompt responses when they're backed up like they are now. If I were you, I'd: 1. Try that Claimyr service someone mentioned - getting a live person is essential 2. Contact your Assembly member (also great advice) 3. Have your doctor's office call the medical provider line (they have a separate number) And a tip: When you do reach someone, ask specifically if there are any "technical stops" or "review flags" on your claim. Those are the internal terms they use for issues that need manual review. Good luck with your recovery!

•Thank you so much for the insider perspective! I'll definitely ask about "technical stops" and "review flags" when I get through. And I'll ask my doctor about calling their special provider line too - I didn't know that existed.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning using Claimyr! Turns out there was an employer verification issue that wasn't showing up in my online portal. The rep said my employer hadn't responded to their request for information (typical of my company). She was able to override it since I had all my documentation and paystubs. My claim is now being processed and I should receive payment within 48 hours. Thank you all for the advice and support. I'm also following up with my Assembly member's office as a backup. This has been the most stressful part of my recovery.

•So typical!!! Glad you got it fixed but WHY don't they just TELL US when there's a problem instead of making us chase them down??? The whole system is designed to make people give up!!! 🤬

•Fantastic news! So glad you got it sorted. It's amazing how these issues can be resolved in minutes once you actually reach someone with authority. Wishing you a smooth recovery from here!
