SDI claim stuck in pending limbo for 6 weeks - no payments and can't reach EDD

I filed my State Disability Insurance claim on January 2nd after knee surgery and I'm going crazy trying to figure out what's happening. It's been 6 weeks and my claim still shows 'pending' in the EDD SDI Online portal. My surgeon submitted all the medical certification forms through SDI Online right after my appointment. I've called the disability phone number literally 30+ times but either get disconnected or told 'call volume too high'. I'm drowning in bills and have zero income! My employer says everything is correct on their end. Has anyone else had their SDI claim stuck in pending this long? What did you do to actually get someone to look at your claim? I'm seriously desperate at this point.

8 WEEKS?! I can't wait that long! Did they backpay you for all those weeks at least?

There could be several reasons why your claim is stuck in pending status: 1. Medical certification issue - even though your doctor submitted it, there might be missing information or EDD might need clarification 2. Identity verification delay 3. Base period wages verification (they need to confirm your income from previous quarters) 4. System backlog - unfortunately EDD is experiencing significant delays processing claims in 2025 You need to get through to a live representative. Have you tried calling right when they open at 8:00am? That's when I had the most success reaching someone.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I've tried calling at 8am for the past week but it's always the same automated message about high call volume. I even tried at 7:58am thinking I might get in queue before others!

The EDD system is rigged to frustrate ppl. They HOPE u will give up & go back to work. I had 2 wait 10 WEEKS last year when I broke my back. They don't care about your bills or your health!!!!!

I had serious trouble reaching EDD for my disability claim last month until I discovered Claimyr. It's a service that basically gets you through to an EDD representative without the endless calling and getting disconnected. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I got through to an actual person, they resolved my pending status in about 10 minutes. Apparently there was a simple mismatch between my doctor's certification dates and my claim dates that the system flagged, but no one was reviewing it manually until I called.

I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? I'm willing to try anything at this point because I'm about to miss my rent payment.

In my experience with SDI claims (I've unfortunately had to file three times in the past five years), there's almost always something that needs clarification from the medical provider. Have you checked with your surgeon's office to confirm they completed all sections of the medical certification form? Also, check your SDI Online account for any messages or alerts. Sometimes they request additional information through the portal instead of calling you. Lastly, did you receive a confirmation number when you filed your claim? If not, your claim might not have been properly submitted in the first place.

Thanks for your help. I do have a claim confirmation number, and my surgeon's office swears they completed everything correctly. I've checked my SDI Online account obsessively and there are no messages requesting additional information. It just says 'pending' with no explanation.

My husband broke his leg in December and his claim was stuck in pending for almost 5 weeks and we were getting desperate. We finally figured out that his employer had reported a different last day worked than what we put on the claim form (off by one day). Once we got his HR to contact EDD with the correction, the payments started processing within 48 hours. Maybe check with your employer about the last day worked date they reported?

I hadn't thought about the last day worked being the issue! I'll double-check with my HR department first thing tomorrow. This might be exactly what's happening.

Another thing to consider - have you enrolled in Informed Delivery through USPS? Sometimes EDD sends requests for additional information through regular mail rather than electronically, especially for identity verification issues. I've seen many cases where people miss these letters and their claims stay pending indefinitely.

I didn't know about Informed Delivery. I'll sign up today. I haven't received any mail from EDD but it's possible something got lost or delivered to the wrong address.

After you speak with your HR about the last day worked and check for any mail, if your claim is still pending, I'd strongly recommend getting through to a live person. They're the only ones who can look at your specific claim and tell you exactly what's causing the delay. Let us know what you find out!

Update: I spoke with my HR and they confirmed the last day worked was correct. I also checked my mail and found nothing from EDD. I ended up using Claimyr this morning and finally got through to a representative! The issue was that my doctor had entered my surgery date incorrectly (off by one digit), which created a mismatch. The EDD rep was able to update it on the spot and said my payments should start processing within 5 business days. I'm so relieved! Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions.
