EDD SDI claim stuck on 'waiting period' for 2+ weeks - should I be concerned?
So frustrated right now. I filed my SDI claim after my back surgery on February 15th and it's been showing 'waiting period' for over two weeks now. I thought the waiting period was only supposed to be 7 days? My doctor submitted all the medical certification paperwork the same day I applied. When I log into SDI Online, there's no information about what's happening or if I need to do anything else. I can't get through on the phone - just endless busy signals or disconnections. Has anyone else had their claim stuck on 'waiting period' for this long? Is this normal or should I be panicking about bills at this point?

•Thanks for responding! Did you do anything to make it change from waiting period to processing? I'm getting nervous because my savings are running out fast.

The system is actually working as designed, but it's confusing. The "waiting period" status doesn't always update properly even after the 7-day waiting period has passed. Your claim is likely being processed, but the status display hasn't caught up. If your doctor submitted the certification on the same day you applied (February 15th), and assuming there were no issues with the documentation, you should start seeing payments soon. A few things to check: 1. Verify the certification form (DE 2501) was completed correctly and fully by your doctor 2. Check that your last day worked matches what your employer reported 3. Make sure you don't have overlapping claims (like UI and SDI) It's normal to see some delay after the waiting period, especially during busy times, but two weeks is getting long. If it goes past three weeks total, you'll definitely want to talk to an agent.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! My doctor definitely filled out everything - I watched them submit it online. My last day worked was February 9th, so that's almost 3 weeks total now. I'm going to keep trying to reach someone.

MINE WAS STUCK FOR THREE WEEKS!!!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN right now. I had back surgery in January and my doctor submitted everything right away too. I kept calling and calling with NO ANSWER. They didn't even have a call back option!!! You need to keep calling every single day until you get through. Once I finally reached someone, they "fixed something in the system" and my payments started two days later. Don't wait hoping it will resolve itself - IT WON'T.

•That's exactly what I was worried about! Did you call the regular SDI number or is there a different one I should be using? I've been calling 1-800-480-3287 with no luck at all.

•YES that's the right number but it's IMPOSSIBLE to get through!!! I called 47 TIMES one day before I got through. Start calling THE MINUTE they open at 8am.

I dealt with this exact issue last month after my knee surgery. The "waiting period" status is misleading - it doesn't automatically update after the 7 days. My claim was stuck like this for almost 3 weeks. Here's what finally worked for me: I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an EDD representative in about 20 minutes instead of making hundreds of calls myself. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep I spoke with manually updated my claim status from "waiting period" to "processing" and explained there was a glitch with my doctor's certification that wasn't displaying in my online account. My payments started processing about 4 days after that call.

•Thank you SO MUCH for this suggestion. I'm going to check it out right now because I'm getting desperate. My doctor said everything was submitted correctly, so I wonder if I'm having the same glitch you did. Did you have to pay anything to use that service?

Did you check to see if your employer filled out their portion correctly? My husband's claim got stuck at "waiting period" because his employer hadn't responded to EDD about his last day worked. Once he contacted HR and they submitted the info, his claim started processing within 48 hours. Maybe call your work and make sure they did their part?

•That's a really good point. I just assumed since my doctor filed everything that was all that was needed. I'll call my HR department tomorrow morning to make sure they've done their part. Thank you!

Hey, just wanted to update everyone! I finally got through to EDD after using the Claimyr service that someone suggested here. The representative told me the issue was actually that my doctor's office had checked a box indicating they weren't sure about my return-to-work date, which triggered a manual review that wasn't showing up in my online status. She cleared that up since my doctor had included a note with an estimated recovery period, and my status changed from "waiting period" to "processing" while I was on the phone! She said I should see my first payment within 3-5 business days. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. This was so stressful but I'm relieved it's finally moving forward!

•SO TYPICAL of EDD to have a problem they don't tell you about!!! Glad you got it fixed but it's RIDICULOUS we have to jump through these hoops when we're already dealing with health issues!!!

Great to hear you got it resolved! This is actually a common issue - when doctors are uncertain about recovery timelines and check that box, it sends the claim to a manual review queue which can add 2-3 weeks to processing time. For anyone else reading this thread in the future, it's worth specifically asking your doctor to provide clear return-to-work dates when possible, even if they're just estimates that might change later. It's easier to extend a claim than to get one out of manual review.

•That's such helpful information! I wish my doctor had known this or EDD had some way of notifying me there was an issue. Would have saved me weeks of stress. Definitely going to remember this if I ever need to file again.

I'm in a similar situation right now - filed my SDI claim on March 10th after shoulder surgery and it's been stuck on "waiting period" for over two weeks too. Reading through this thread gives me hope that it might just be a system glitch or documentation issue. I'm going to try calling my HR department first to make sure they submitted everything on their end, and then look into that Claimyr service if I still can't get through to EDD directly. It's so frustrating when you're already dealing with recovery and then have to stress about whether your benefits will come through. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it really helps to know I'm not alone in this!

•I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my claim on March 12th after ankle surgery and it's been stuck on "waiting period" for 2 weeks. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been so helpful - I had no idea that the status doesn't always update properly or that there could be hidden issues with the documentation. I'm definitely going to check with my HR department tomorrow like @Nia Davis suggested, and if that doesn t'work I ll'try the Claimyr service. It s'such a relief to know this is a common problem and not just me doing something wrong. Hope we both get this sorted out soon!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Filed my SDI claim on March 15th after carpal tunnel surgery and it's been stuck on "waiting period" for almost 2 weeks. This thread has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea there could be so many hidden issues that don't show up in the online portal. Based on what everyone's shared, I'm going to: 1. Call my HR department tomorrow to verify they submitted their portion 2. Contact my doctor's office to double-check they didn't mark any uncertain boxes about return-to-work dates 3. Try that Claimyr service if I can't get through to EDD directly It's so reassuring to know this is a widespread issue and not something I did wrong. The stress of not knowing what's happening while you're already dealing with recovery and medical bills is just awful. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions - this community is a lifesaver!
