EDD SDI payment timeline after doctor submits medical certification - still waiting 3 weeks later
I've been off work since February 12th with severe back issues (herniated disc + sciatica). My doctor filed the medical certification electronically on February 15th, and I completed my portion of the SDI claim the same day. My online account shows 'claim received' but there's still no payment after 3 weeks! My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic. Is this normal? The EDD website says processing takes 14 days but I'm well past that now. Anyone know how long it actually takes after your doctor submits the paperwork? Should I be calling them? I tried twice but got disconnected after waiting for 2+ hours each time.

It took over 25 days for my first payment to arrive after my doctor submitted my paperwork. The 14-day processing time they claim on the website is LAUGHABLE. They're overwhelmed with claims right now - happens every winter. Keep checking your account daily and if it hits 30 days with no movement, then you should definitely try to reach them.

•Ugh, seriously?? 25 days?? I've already gone through most of my savings. This is so frustrating. Did you get backpay for all those weeks at least?

mine only took 10 days but my friend waited like 5 weeks so i think it depends on how busy they are maybe?? also does ur claim say pending or received? cuz thats different

•It says 'claim received' not pending. Does that mean something different? Now I'm even more confused...

The timeline varies considerably, but there are a few things to check: 1. Make sure your medical certification was complete (sometimes doctors miss fields) 2. Verify your employer response was received (your employer has to verify your last day worked) 3. Confirm you completed the 7-day waiting period which isn't paid 4. Check if there are any identity verification holds (common issue in 2025) If your claim says 'received' but not 'processing' or 'paid,' there might be missing information. Remember that payments are issued for the period AFTER your certification is complete and valid, not from your first day off work. So if there's any delay in the doctor or employer submission, that can extend your wait time.

•Thank you so much for the detailed info! My doctor definitely submitted everything - I watched him do it in the office. And I know my employer responded because I followed up with HR. I've definitely passed the waiting period since I've been off for 3+ weeks now. Maybe there's an identity verification issue? How would I know if that's happening?

I just went through this exact situation last month. After waiting 23 days with no payment and no explanation, I finally got through to an EDD representative who told me there was a "technical review" flag on my account that wasn't visible to me online. They cleared it immediately and my payment was processed the next day. The trick to reaching EDD SDI was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that navigates the phone maze and gets you in the callback queue. Totally worth it after I wasted hours trying to call myself. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I actually spoke to someone, they were helpful and fixed the issue right away. Sometimes there are just random flags or reviews that hold up your claim without any notification.

•That sounds exactly like what might be happening with my claim! I've never heard of Claimyr before but I'll definitely check it out. At this point I'll try anything to get this resolved before rent is due. Did they tell you why your claim got flagged for review?

•This is a common issue. The EDD SDI system doesn't always generate notifications for all hold types. If there's a medical clarification needed, they're supposed to contact the doctor directly, not the claimant. However, doctors' offices frequently miss these requests or don't respond promptly. It's always a good idea to proactively check with both your doctor and EDD if your claim seems delayed.

When I was on disability after my surgery, I thought I'd go CRAZY waiting for payment!!! First they said my doctor's certification was incomplete (it wasn't), then they said they needed to verify my identity (even though I've lived at the same address for 15 years), then they said there was a "system delay" whatever THAT means!!! All told it took 32 days from when my doctor submitted everything until I got my first payment. BUT - they did pay me retroactively for everything except the waiting period week. So don't worry, you'll eventually get all the money you're entitled to, it just might take forever and a day to arrive.

•32 days?! That's insane! I'm glad to hear they paid retroactively though. That gives me some relief knowing I'll eventually get the money, even if it takes forever. Just wish they were more transparent about the timeline.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get through to EDD? Any updates on your claim status?

•Yes! I used that Claimyr service you recommended and actually got through to a real person yesterday! Turns out there was an employer verification issue - even though my HR said they responded, EDD claimed they never received it. The agent was able to verify my employment over the phone and manually override the hold. She said payment should be processed within 48 hours. Thank you so much for the recommendation! Would have been lost without it.

Glad to hear you got it resolved! For anyone else reading this thread in the future, here's a quick summary of typical SDI payment timelines after medical certification: • Best case scenario: 10-14 days • Average scenario: 14-21 days • Delayed scenario (with minor issues): 21-30 days • Problem scenarios (verification issues, incomplete info): 30+ days Always remember that the 7-day waiting period doesn't count toward your benefit days and isn't paid. Payment typically covers the period beginning after the waiting period ends, assuming your claim is approved by then.
