Stuck in EDD SDI 'waiting period' for 6+ weeks - payments haven't started despite doctor certification
I've been off work since January 3rd with severe back issues (herniated disc) and filed my EDD SDI claim right away. My doctor submitted all the medical certification forms by January 10th. It's now February 19th, and when I check my online account, it STILL shows I'm in the 'waiting period' - over SIX WEEKS later! The waiting period should only be 7 days, right? I haven't received a single payment, and there's no indication my claim was even approved. My savings are completely drained at this point, and I'm getting desperate. Has anyone else experienced their claim being stuck in the waiting period status for this long? I've called EDD at least 15 times but only get automated messages saying my claim was received. No real person ever answers. Should I resubmit everything? Ask my doctor to send docs again? I'm completely lost on what to do next and really need the disability payments to start ASAP.

This definitely isn't normal. The waiting period is only 7 days from your disability start date, so something is wrong with your claim. The most common reasons for delays like this are: 1) Missing or incomplete medical certification (even if your doctor thinks they sent it), 2) Identity verification issues, or 3) Base period wage problems. Have you checked if there are any messages in your SDI Online inbox? Sometimes they send requests for additional information there without notifying you by email or mail. Also, did you receive an acknowledgment letter in the mail with your claim number after filing?

•Thanks for responding! I checked my SDI Online inbox and there's nothing there. And yes, I did get the letter with my claim number in the mail about a week after filing. It just said they received my claim and would process it, but nothing about needing additional info. So frustrating because I know my doctor submitted everything - she showed me the confirmation receipt!

•I didn't even think about that! I'll call HR tomorrow morning and see if there's a discrepancy. Did EDD eventually contact you about the mismatch or did you have to figure it out yourself?

I had something similar happen and it turned out I checked the wrong box on my application that made it look like I was getting other benefits at the same time (workers comp). Check your copy of the application if you have it. Also the EDD website can be super glitchy - sometimes the status doesn't update even when they're processing your claim.

•I don't think I checked any box for other benefits, but now I'm questioning myself. Is there any way to view my original application in the SDI Online system? I can't seem to find that option.

•Not that I know of. You'd have to talk to an agent to verify what you put on the application. So annoying right???

As someone who works with SDI claims professionally, I can tell you that claims stuck in "waiting period" status for this long usually indicate a technical problem in the system rather than an issue with your documentation. The actual processing may be complete, but the online status update failed. You need to speak with a claims examiner directly. Unfortunately, that's extremely difficult with the current call volume. I recommend trying these specific approaches: 1. Call at exactly 8:00 AM when their system opens 2. Try the alternate number (833-978-2511) which sometimes has lower wait times 3. Use the Contact Us form in your SDI Online account to specifically request a callback 4. If your medical condition has changed or worsened, have your doctor submit an updated medical certification as this can trigger a review Don't resubmit your entire claim as this could further complicate things.

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I've been calling mid-morning, so I'll try right at 8:00 AM tomorrow. I didn't know about the alternate number either. If I can't get through tomorrow, I'll definitely submit the contact form requesting a callback. It's a relief to hear this might just be a system issue rather than something wrong with my actual claim.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I waited NINE WEEKS for my first disability payment last year and nearly lost my apartment. They claim "high volume" but it's just incompetence. My neighbor filed the exact same week as me and got paid in 2 weeks. Their internal systems don't communicate with each other, and half the staff don't know their own rules. I filed a complaint with my state representative's office and MAGICALLY my claim was fixed 2 days later. DON'T WASTE TIME with their phone system - contact your state assembly member's office!!!

•That's actually a really good idea. I never thought about contacting my assembly member. Did you just call their office and explain the situation? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yes! Just google your address + state assembly member, call their office and ask for their constituent services department. They have special channels to EDD and can often resolve issues quickly. They HATE bad press about state agencies failing to serve constituents!

I finally got through to EDD after trying for weeks using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that basically waits on hold for you and calls when an agent is available. I was skeptical but they got me connected to a live EDD agent in about 45 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The agent I spoke with told me my claim was actually approved but stuck in their system due to a "processing flag" that needed manual clearing. They fixed it right there and my payments started showing as pending in my account the next day. Definitely worth getting through to a real person!

•Thank you for the suggestion! At this point, I'd be willing to try anything. A processing flag sounds like what might be happening with my claim too. I'll check out the service you mentioned - getting through to an actual agent seems to be the only way to resolve these issues.

•I used it last month when I had issues with my pregnancy disability. It worked but I had to provide my claim # and some personal info which made me nervous. In the end it was legit though and saved me hours of frustration.

One more important thing to try: check if your employer filed their DE 2503 form (Statement of Wages). Sometimes the claim gets stuck if there's a significant discrepancy between your reported wages and what your employer reports. If your employer hasn't submitted this form or entered incorrect information, your claim can remain in limbo for weeks. Call your HR or payroll department to confirm they've submitted this form correctly.

•I called my HR department this morning based on these suggestions. You were right! They admitted they hadn't submitted the DE 2503 form yet because the person who handles those was out on vacation. They're expediting it today. I can't believe my payments have been held up because of something so basic! Thank you all for the suggestions - I'm hopeful this will resolve the issue.

•Great news! Once they submit that form, call EDD again to make sure they connect it to your claim file. In my experience, it can take another 7-10 days for payments to start flowing after the wage verification is received, but it should move quickly from there. Keep us posted!
