EDD SDI stuck on 'pending medical provider form' despite confirmation email - no payments after 3 weeks
I'm so frustrated with this EDD SDI process right now! I filed for disability benefits almost a month ago because of severe back injuries from a workplace accident. Last week I received this letter saying my claim couldn't be processed because they were missing my doctor's certification form. I immediately drove to my orthopedist's office and they promised they completed everything online that same day (April 7th). The next day, I got an email from EDD confirming they received my medical information. Great, right? WRONG. It's now April 14th, and when I log into my SDI Online account, it STILL shows my claim as "pending medical provider form" - like nothing happened at all! No updates, no payments, no timeline, nothing. My savings are completely drained, and I have rent due in two weeks. I've tried calling EDD at least 12 times but either get disconnected or face hours of waiting. Has anyone experienced this weird limbo where they confirm receiving your docs but the system doesn't update? Is there something else I need to do? How long should this actually take once they have all the required information?

•So you're saying I should just wait it out for another week or so? Did you have to do anything to make the payment happen, or it just suddenly appeared?

The EDD system can be incredibly frustrating! That "pending medical provider form" status sometimes gets stuck even after they've actually received everything they need. A few things to check: 1. Make sure your doctor filled out the correct DE 2501 form and used your claim ID number 2. Confirm they submitted it through SDI Online and not via fax/mail (electronic is much faster) 3. Check if there are any other incomplete sections in your claim (income verification, etc.) In my experience working with many SDI claims, there's often a 7-10 business day processing delay after they receive medical certification before your claim actually moves forward. The system status doesn't always reflect what's happening behind the scenes. If it's been more than 10 business days since that confirmation email, then it's worth trying to reach someone.

•Thanks for the detailed response! I'm 100% certain they submitted electronically (I watched the office staff do it). I don't think there are any other incomplete sections, but how would I know? Is there a way to check that? Everything on my end looks fine, but the status just won't update.

I think your waiting time is completely normal. I waited 5 weeks from start to finish on my pregnancy disability claim in February. And that was WITH all my forms submitted properly! EDD is just backed up. The status on the website sometimes stays stuck at the same step even when they're actually processing your claim behind the scenes. That said, you *should* receive payment within 2-3 weeks from when they confirmed receiving your medical info. If you hit the 3-week mark with no payment, THEN you might have a real problem worth investigating. But right now, it sounds like typical EDD delays to me.

•This is great advice. The status indicators in the EDD SDI system often lag behind what's actually happening. Many claimants panic seeing no movement online, but internally your claim might be moving forward. That said, three weeks post-medical certification with no payment is definitely the point where more aggressive follow-up becomes necessary.

DID U CALL THEM?!?!? U NEED TO CALL EARLY MORNING RIGHT WHEN THEY OPEN AT 8AM!!! I had the EXACT same problem and it turned out there was a tiny mistake on my doctor's form that they NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT. I wasted 6 WEEKS waiting for nothing!!!! Don't listen to these people saying just wait - CALL THEM!!

•I've been trying to call... it's absolutely impossible to get through! I've tried different times of day including right at 8am. Either get a busy signal or the automated system just disconnects me after saying they're experiencing high call volume. So frustrating.

Try using Claimyr to get through to EDD. I was stuck in the same situation last month - couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks, claim status stuck on pending, bills piling up. Someone on this forum recommended Claimyr and it actually worked. They got me connected to a real person at EDD in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. The agent was able to see that there was a minor issue with my doctor's certification that I never would have known about otherwise. Check out their site at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. It saved me weeks of waiting and stress.

In my experience, the "pending medical provider form" status can definitely get stuck even after they've processed everything. When I filed for SDI last year after my surgery, I had a similar situation where the status didn't change for weeks, but I suddenly got payment. Something to watch for - check your mail carefully! Sometimes they send requests for additional information that aren't reflected in the online system. Also, double-check that your doctor included all required information. My first submission got rejected because my doctor didn't specify an expected return-to-work date, even though I had a follow-up appointment scheduled to determine that. The system is frustratingly rigid sometimes.

•That's helpful to know about checking my mail carefully. I've been so focused on the online status that I might have missed something. I'll double check with my doctor's office tomorrow to make sure they included all the details, especially the return-to-work date.

has anyone ever thought that maybe the edd is purposely making this process difficult so people just give up? i mean seriously, whats the point of having an online system if it doesnt even work right? and why send a confirmation email if nothing actually happened? the whole thing is designed to frustrate people into quitting.

•While the system is definitely frustrating, I don't think it's intentionally designed to make people give up. The SDI program is actually funded by employee contributions, so there's no financial incentive for the state to deny legitimate claims. It's more likely a case of outdated technology, understaffing, and poor system integration. The confirmation email is automatically generated when a document is uploaded to their system, but the actual processing still requires human review, which is where the bottleneck occurs.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at EDD using that Claimyr service mentioned above. Turns out there WAS a problem with my doctor's certification! The disability end date was missing (even though my doctor said they completed everything). The EDD agent was able to update this while I was on the phone and told me my claim should be processed within 7-10 days. Thank you all for your help - I never would have known about this issue if I hadn't been able to talk to an actual person! I'll update again once I (hopefully) get my payment.

•So glad you were able to get through! It's crazy how often these little details cause huge delays, and you'd never know without speaking to someone directly. Please do update us when you get your payment!

FINAL UPDATE: Just got my first payment today - almost exactly one week after getting through to EDD and fixing the issue with my claim! The online status finally changed from "pending medical provider form" to "claim established" two days ago, and the payment showed up in my account this morning. Moral of the story: don't just wait if your claim seems stuck - there might be an issue that needs fixing that you can't see in the online system!

•Congrats! So glad things worked out. This is a really good lesson for everyone dealing with EDD SDI claims - sometimes there are hidden issues that only direct contact can resolve. Thanks for updating us!
