EDD SDI claim filed but no doctor paperwork received - what's next?
I'm really confused about the next steps in my disability claim process. I just filed for SDI disability benefits yesterday and got a notification that EDD sent paperwork to my employer, but I haven't received anything for my doctor to complete. Don't they need medical certification? My back injury is getting worse and I can't work for at least 6 weeks according to my initial doctor visit. Is the medical form coming separately or was I supposed to download something from the SDI Online portal for my doctor? This is my first time applying and I'm worried I missed something important. Help!

Yes, your doctor needs to fill out the medical certification portion (Part B) of the DE 2501 form. If you filed online through SDI Online, your doctor will receive an email invitation to complete the medical portion electronically if you provided their email. If you filed with a paper form, you should have gotten the whole packet and needed to have your doctor complete their section before submitting. Call your doctor's office to see if they received anything, and check your SDI Online account for any notices about missing information.

•Thanks! I did file online and entered my doctor's email address. Do you know how long it usually takes for them to get the electronic notification? Should I call my doctor now or wait a few days? I'm stressing about this because I really need the income while I'm out.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!! I filed in January and my doctor never got ANY notification. I had to call EDD 47 TIMES before I got through to someone who could help!!! They finally had to manually send a request to my doctor. The whole system is designed to make us give up and not get our benefits. MAKE SURE you stay on top of everything and document every single conversation!!!

•Wow, that's really concerning. Did you eventually get your benefits? How long did the whole process take after all those calls?

The process works like this: 1. You file your claim (which you've done) 2. EDD sends notification to your employer to verify employment details 3. Your doctor needs to complete the medical certification For online claims, your doctor should receive an email invitation to certify your condition electronically within 1-2 business days. However, the system isn't perfect. You should: 1. Log into your SDI Online account and check if there are any notices about missing information 2. Call your doctor's office to confirm if they received the email request 3. If they haven't received it within 3 business days, you may need to contact EDD Be aware that the initial payment typically includes a 7-day unpaid waiting period. So even after your claim is fully approved, your benefit payments will begin after that waiting period.

•Thank you for breaking this down! I'll check my online account again tonight. It's been exactly 24 hours since I filed so maybe I'm being too impatient. The 7-day waiting period is good to know - I need to budget accordingly.

I had a similar issue last month with my pregnancy disability claim. After waiting two days and no doctor certification, I tried calling EDD directly but couldn't get through AT ALL. Kept getting disconnected after waiting 2+ hours. I was desperate and finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 25 minutes! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The EDD rep was able to resend the doctor certification request immediately. Saved me so much stress during an already stressful time.

So my sister-in-law had this exact same thing happen when she broke her ankle last year and couldn't work at the hospital. She also filed online and thought the doctor would get something automatically but turns out sometimes that email thing doesn't work right. She ended up going to her doctor's office and they called EDD right from there and fixed the whole thing while she was sitting there. Made it way easier since the doctor could talk directly to EDD about her injury. Just a thought if you're able to go to your doctor's office!

•That's a great idea! I have a follow-up appointment on Friday so I'll mention this and see if they can call EDD while I'm there. Really appreciate the suggestion!

Make sure your doctor KNOWS you filed for disability!!! Some doctors get these EDD emails and ignore them if they weren't expecting them. Call your doctor's office TODAY and tell the front desk you filed for state disability and they need to watch for the email certification request. Ask them to check spam too. Trust me this will save you weeks of headache.

•I didn't even think about this! I told my doctor I'd be filing for disability but didn't specifically mention they'd get an email. Calling them right now!

UPDATE: I called my doctor's office and turns out they DID receive the certification email yesterday but it was sitting in their general inbox! The receptionist transferred me to their disability paperwork coordinator who promised to complete it today. Thank you all for the advice - would have taken much longer without your help. Now I just need to wait for the 7-day waiting period and hope everything processes smoothly from here!

•Great news! Once your doctor completes their portion, you should see your claim status update in your SDI Online account within 2-3 business days. First payment typically arrives 1-2 weeks after approval, so hopefully you'll have funds soon. Just remember to complete your continued certification forms if your disability extends beyond your initial estimated return date.
