EDD only sent recovery form instead of certification - confused about SDI claim status

I've been on SDI since January after a back surgery and I'm really confused about what's going on with my claim now. I was expecting my regular certification form but instead EDD just sent me this form asking if I've recovered or not. Nothing else. My last certification was processed on April 3rd and I got my payment, but now I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. My doctor already submitted the updated medical certification last week extending my disability period. Does this recovery form mean they're trying to close my claim? Has anyone else gotten this instead of regular certification forms? I'm worried my payments will stop if I don't understand what they want from me.

Thats totally normal! i got the same thing around my 3rd month. its just their way of checking if ur still disabled or if u went back to work already. if ur not recovered, just check that box and send it back asap. they'll keep sending ur regular forms after

Thank you for responding. So just to be clear, I check the box saying I haven't recovered yet, mail it back, and then they'll resume sending regular certification forms? Will there be a delay in my payments because of this?

This is a standard part of EDD's verification process. Around the 12-week mark (sometimes earlier), they send the recovery form (DE 2563) as a check-in point. It's different from your normal certification. Think of it as EDD's way of confirming your disability status without requiring a full certification. Since your doctor already submitted an updated medical certification extending your disability period, you should: 1. Mark that you have NOT recovered 2. Return the form immediately (delays here can cause payment interruptions) 3. Keep an eye on your SDI Online account for your next regular certification date Your regular certification schedule should resume after they process this form. This is just an interim verification step.

This is so helpful, thank you! I was panicking thinking they were trying to end my claim even though my doctor said I need another 6 weeks. I'll send it back tomorrow morning.

Just to add to what others have said - the recovery form (DE 2563) is part of their standard verification process. However, if you don't return it promptly, it CAN cause your claim to be flagged for review which can lead to payment delays. I recommend calling EDD after you mail it back just to confirm they received it. Unfortunately, reaching an EDD representative can be extremely frustrating. After spending weeks trying to get through myself, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an EDD agent without the endless busy signals. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd It helped me confirm my forms were received and my claim stayed active. Worth it to avoid payment gaps.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME last year and I almost LOST MY BENEFITS because I didn't know what it was!!! The EDD system is so confusing and they NEVER explain anything properly. I thought it was just another certification form but it's NOT - it's their sneaky way of checking if they can cut you off!!! Make sure you mark "NOT RECOVERED" if you're still disabled and CALL THEM to confirm they got it. They "lost" my form twice and I had to resend it THREE TIMES before they processed it correctly. The whole system is designed to make people give up!!

That's really scary! I don't want to deal with payment interruptions. Did you have any luck getting through on the phone when they lost your forms?

NOPE! Took me 47 calls over 3 days to finally get through. Keep detailed records of EVERYTHING - when you mailed the form, tracking numbers if possible, and write down the name of EVERY person you talk to. The system is designed to wear you down until you give up!! Good luck!

I had a similar experience, but my situation was with PFL not SDI. I got confused about which form I needed to complete and ended up having my benefits delayed for three weeks! The thing I learned is that EDD sends different forms at different stages of your claim, and you absolutely need to return each one by their deadlines. For your specific situation with the recovery form - this is their way of determining if they should continue processing payments or close your claim. Since your doctor already submitted documentation, you should be fine, but definitely return that form ASAP and mark that you haven't recovered. Also, in my experience, even though your doctor submitted the extension paperwork, the recovery form is a separate process. They don't automatically connect these two things in their system without you confirming on the recovery form.

Thank you for explaining! I think I was confusing PFL and SDI requirements too. I'll make sure to return the form ASAP and follow up to make sure it was processed correctly.

Just following up - did you get this resolved? Did you mail back the recovery form?

Yes! I mailed the form back marking that I haven't recovered, and after about a week, my regular certification form appeared on my SDI Online account. Everything seems to be back on track. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Glad to hear you got it sorted out! For anyone else who might be dealing with this - I went through something similar last year and found it helpful to keep copies of everything you send to EDD. I actually scan or take photos of forms before mailing them so I have proof of what I submitted and when. The recovery form thing caught me off guard too at first, but once you understand it's just a routine check-in, it's much less stressful. Thanks for updating us on how it worked out!

This is such great advice about keeping copies! I'm new to dealing with SDI claims and had no idea about documenting everything. I just started my claim process last week and seeing this thread has been really helpful in understanding what to expect. It sounds like the recovery forms are pretty standard but can be confusing if you don't know what they are. Thanks for sharing your experience - I'll definitely keep detailed records from the start!

Welcome to the community! You're smart to start documenting everything from the beginning - it really does make a huge difference when dealing with EDD. One thing I'd add is to also keep track of any phone calls you make (date, time, who you spoke with, confirmation numbers if they give you any). The recovery forms usually come around the 12-week mark, but every case is different. Don't hesitate to ask questions here - this community has been incredibly helpful for navigating all the confusing parts of the SDI process. Good luck with your claim!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the great advice about documenting phone calls too! I hadn't thought about tracking confirmation numbers but that makes total sense given what I'm reading about EDD's system. It's really reassuring to know there's a supportive community here to help navigate all of this. I'm definitely going to bookmark this thread as a reference for when I eventually get to that 12-week mark. Appreciate everyone sharing their experiences!
