EDD SDI after C-section: Extended disability certification confusion - can't submit continued claim
Just had my C-section 3 weeks ago and my doctor extended my disability for an additional 2 weeks beyond the standard recovery period. The problem is, my EDD account is showing 'to continue to receive payments submit the continued claim certification' but I can't find ANYWHERE to actually submit this! I've looked through every section of my SDI Online account. The only options showing are an 'Appeal attachment' and something called '2587 notice-automatic payment.' When I click on that form, it asks if I've recovered and returned to work (I haven't!), but forces me to select 'I have recovered from disability and have returned to work' to proceed, which obviously isn't true, so I just exit. My inbox mentions something about having my doctor fill out a supplementary certificate if I'm still disabled - is THAT what I need instead? I've been calling EDD non-stop but can't get through to anyone. My payments are going to stop soon and I'm starting to panic! Has anyone dealt with this post-C-section certification issue before?

•Omg thank you! So I don't need to touch anything on my end? Just have my doctor submit another form? That makes more sense than what I was trying to do lol. Did your payments continue without interruption when you did this?

Your doctor needs to submit a DE 2525XX Supplementary Certificate form for your extension. After a C-section, EDD typically approves the standard recovery period automatically, but extensions require this additional certification. Don't fill out the 2587 form if you haven't recovered - that would terminate your claim. The doctor's office should be familiar with this process for post-cesarean extensions. Make sure they include your claim ID when submitting.

•Thank you so much for explaining! I'll call my OB's office today. Do you know how long it usually takes for payments to process once they submit that form? I'm worried about bills coming up...

•Not who u asked but my payments took like 5 days after doctor sent form in. Each doctor office different tho. Some are fast with EDD stuff some suuuuuper slow 🙄

I went through this exact nightmare after my C-section in January! The EDD system is SO confusing for pregnancy disability extensions. Your doctor needs to submit the supplementary certificate (DE 2525XX) - you don't submit anything yourself for a post-surgery extension. BUT, make sure your doctor includes your claim ID number and your full name exactly as it appears on your claim or it will get stuck in processing limbo. I actually had my doctor fax it twice because the first one somehow got lost in their system. Also, call your doctor's office and confirm they sent it - don't just assume.

•Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm definitely going to follow up with my doctor's office and make sure they include all my correct info. Did you have any gap in payments while waiting for the supplementary certificate to process?

•There was about a 8-day gap for me, but I think that was because of the lost form. Once they actually received the correct form, payment came within 3 business days. Just keep checking your payment history in your SDI Online account - you'll see it update there first.

I HATED dealing with EDD after my c-section last year. Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual person at EDD. I was calling for days with no luck, then used their service and got through in like 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. Honestly saved my sanity when I was dealing with my post-surgery extension confusion. The SDI agent I spoke with confirmed I didn't need to submit anything - just needed my doctor to send in that supplemental form.

•Thank you for the suggestion! I'll check out the service if I can't get this resolved soon. My doctor's office can be slow with paperwork sometimes, so I might need to speak directly with EDD.

This is a common confusion with post-surgery SDI extensions. Here's what's happening: Your initial pregnancy disability claim automatically includes the standard recovery period. For extensions (like after a C-section), the DOCTOR must submit a Supplementary Certificate (DE 2525XX) - you don't submit anything yourself through SDI Online. That message about "submitting continued claim certification" is misleading for your situation. The 2587 form you found is only for when you've fully recovered and are ready to close your claim. Don't use that yet! And yes, getting through to an EDD representative is unfortunately very difficult. Make sure your doctor knows they need to submit this additional certification with your claim number and correct information.

•This makes so much sense now, thank you! It feels like EDD could make this way clearer in their communications. I'll contact my doctor's office right away to get that DE 2525XX submitted.

Just checking in - were you able to get your doctor to submit the supplementary certificate? I know how stressful this can be when you're also trying to recover from surgery and take care of a newborn!

•Yes! I called my OB and they submitted it yesterday. The office staff said they do these all the time and were super helpful once I knew what to ask for. Now just waiting for it to process. Thank you all for the help! This forum literally saved me so much stress!

So glad you got it sorted out! For future reference for anyone else reading this - if your doctor's office seems unfamiliar with the DE 2525XX form, you can actually download it from the EDD website and bring it to them. Some smaller practices don't deal with these extensions often. Also, keep checking your SDI Online account every day or two - the payment status usually updates there before you get any mail notification. Congrats on your new baby and hope your recovery goes smoothly! 🍼

•This is such helpful advice! I wish I had known about downloading the form beforehand - would have saved me some back and forth with the doctor's office. And you're right about checking the online account regularly, I've been refreshing it obsessively lol. Thank you for the congrats and the tips for other moms who might go through this! 💕

This thread is so helpful! I'm 6 months pregnant and already stressing about navigating EDD after delivery. Saving all this info about the DE 2525XX form for later. Question - does the supplementary certificate process work the same way for vaginal delivery extensions, or is it just for C-sections? My doctor mentioned I might need extra recovery time due to some complications I've been having.

•Great question! The DE 2525XX supplementary certificate process works for ANY delivery type when you need extended recovery time beyond the standard period. So yes, it applies to vaginal deliveries too if your doctor determines you need extra time due to complications. The key is that your doctor needs to medically justify why you need the extension - whether it's from C-section complications, tearing, infection, or other delivery-related issues. Definitely discuss this with your OB ahead of time so they're prepared to submit the form if needed. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I'm currently 8 months pregnant and this whole thread has been incredibly eye-opening! I had no idea about the DE 2525XX form or that doctors need to submit supplementary certificates for extensions. My OB never mentioned any of this during our birth plan discussions. I'm definitely going to bring this up at my next appointment so we're prepared. It sounds like the EDD system is pretty confusing to navigate, especially when you're dealing with postpartum recovery. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - this is exactly the kind of real-world info that you just don't get from the official EDD website!
