EDD SDI approved with weekly benefit amount but no payment after 5 weeks - can't certify
I'm going crazy trying to figure out what's happening with my disability claim! I had surgery back in January and my doctor submitted the medical certification (Part B) 5 weeks ago. When I check my SDI Online account, it shows I've been approved and even lists my weekly benefit amount ($1,243), but I haven't received a single payment yet for the 3 weeks I was off work. I've already recovered and returned to my job last week, but still nothing from EDD. The weird part is my account doesn't show any weeks available to certify - there's literally no option to certify for the time I was disabled. I've tried calling EDD about 20 times but either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Do I need to do something special since I've already returned to work? Really need that backpay to cover my medical expenses!

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Did they explain why it happened? I'm wondering if it's because I already returned to work before they processed my claim fully.

This is actually pretty common with short-term disability claims where you return to work before the claim is fully processed. When you already have a WBA (Weekly Benefit Amount) established but no certification weeks showing up, it typically means EDD has approved your claim but hasn't set up the certification period correctly. Since you've already returned to work, you need to make sure they have your correct work return date. The system should automatically generate certification forms for your disability period, but sometimes it glitches when the return-to-work date comes before they've fully processed everything. You'll definitely need to speak with an SDI representative to get this resolved. They can manually set up your certification period for just those 3 weeks you were disabled. Make sure you have your claim ID, exact disability dates, and return-to-work date ready when you call.

•The EXACT same thing happened with my pregnancy disability claim!!! I was off for 6 weeks after my C-section, but my doctor submitted everything late and by the time EDD processed it I was already back at work. My account showed the benefit amount but no way to certify. Took me over a month of calling to get it fixed :

Have you checked if they mailed you paper certification forms? Sometimes when there's a system issue they default to paper forms instead of online certification. Check your mail carefully!

•That's interesting - I don't recall getting anything in the mail except the initial claim confirmation letter. I'll double-check though, thanks for the suggestion!

I had an issue similar to yours where I couldn't certify online after returning to work from short-term disability. After struggling for weeks to reach someone at EDD SDI, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to a real EDD agent in less than 30 minutes. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I finally got through, the agent explained that my claim had a "return to work" flag that was preventing online certification. They manually entered my certification for the exact period I was disabled, and my payment was processed within 2 days. For short claims where you're already back to work, you almost always need to speak with a rep directly to certify retroactively.

•That's exactly what I needed to know! I think you're right about the "return to work" flag - that would explain why there's nothing showing up for me to certify. I'll check out that service and try to get through to an actual person. At this point, I just want this resolved!

There's actually a specific procedure for this situation. When you have a short-term disability claim and return to work before certification is set up, you need to request what's called a "DE 2500A" form - it's a retroactive certification form for disability benefits. You can specifically ask for this when you call. Here's the step-by-step process: 1. Call the SDI office (I know, easier said than done) 2. Inform them you need to certify for a completed disability period 3. Request the DE 2500A form specifically 4. When you receive it, fill it out with your exact disability start and end dates 5. Include your return-to-work date 6. Mail it back to the office listed on the form This is much faster than waiting for them to figure out the issue on their own. The key is getting someone on the phone who understands what a DE 2500A is.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! I had no idea there was a specific form for this situation. I'll definitely ask for the DE 2500A form when I call. Fingers crossed I can get this resolved quickly!

•The DE 2500A saved me last year! But doesn't EDD also have an option to request this form through SDI Online somewhere? I thought I saw that somewhere but maybe I'm confusing it with something else...

This is why I HATE dealing with EDD!!! They don't tell you ANY of this stuff when you file a claim. Like how are regular people supposed to know all these special forms and procedures?? The system is DESIGNED to make people give up on getting their benefits. I bet if OP never posted here they'd just never get their money. RIDICULOUS!!

•Totally agree. It's 2025 and their systems still feel like they're from 1995. They should at least have better instructions on their website about these special situations.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! The rep confirmed what many of you said - because I had already returned to work before my certification was set up, the system didn't automatically generate certification weeks for me. They're sending me the DE 2500A form to certify retroactively for my disability period. The rep said I should receive payment within 7-10 days after they receive my completed form. Thank you all for your help - I would have been completely lost without your advice!

•Great news! Make sure you fill out those dates EXACTLY as they appear on your claim. Even a one-day discrepancy can cause delays. Glad you got it sorted out!

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. Got connected to a representative in about 20 minutes! Definitely worth it after all the failed attempts calling directly.
