EDD SDI payment delayed over a month - can't figure out claim status

I've been on disability since February 10th and I'm getting super anxious because I haven't received ANY payments yet! It's been over a month and I'm falling behind on bills. When I log into my SDI Online account, all I can see is my weekly benefit amount ($825), the maximum benefit amount, and claim start/end dates. But there's absolutely nothing showing payment status or why it's delayed. I completed my first certification on 2/24 after the waiting period, but no money. The status just says "claim established" which tells me nothing! I've called EDD at least 20 times but can't get through to a human - just the automated system that repeats what I already see online. My doctor confirmed they submitted all the medical forms electronically. How do I find out what's actually happening with my payments? Is there a different status page I'm missing? Anyone know how to check if there's an issue with my claim that's not showing up in my account?

you have to look under "payment history" not just claim status. the claim status only shows yr benefit amount not what's been paid. if nothing under payment history then there's probably a hold on ur account for some reason. u might need to call and actually talk to someone.

Thanks! I checked payment history and it's completely empty - no records at all. So you're right, there must be some kind of hold. But WHY don't they tell us what the problem is????

This happened to me in January. There was an identity verification issue that didn't show up anywhere in my account. The only way I found out was by finally getting through to a representative. Check if you received any letters in the mail (they don't always send electronic notices for everything). Also, when you certified, did you report any wages, other income, or out-of-state travel? Any of those can trigger a manual review that causes delays. If your claim says "established" but nothing is in payment history, something is definitely holding up your claim. Unfortunately, you'll need to speak with an SDI representative to resolve it.

I didn't report any wages or travel. I've been home sick the whole time. And I haven't gotten ANY mail from them except the initial letter confirming my claim was filed. This is so frustrating!

EDD is NOTORIOUS for random payment delays!! My wife's pregnancy disability claim was stuck for 5 WEEKS with no explanation. The system is completely broken. They expect people to just magically pay bills with no income while they sit on claims for no reason. And good luck getting anyone on the phone - that's a joke.

Yep, same here! My disability claim sat for 6 weeks before anyone looked at it. When I finally got through, they said "oh we need additional information" but never bothered to tell me that. The whole system is designed to make you give up.

It sounds like you need to speak directly with an SDI representative to find the hold on your claim. Based on what you've described, your claim is likely flagged for review for one of these common reasons: 1. Identity verification issues 2. Medical certification discrepancies (even though your doctor says they submitted everything) 3. Employer wage verification delay 4. Previous claim overlap 5. System glitch where your certification wasn't properly processed Unfortunately, these issues often don't appear in your online account. The quickest resolution will be speaking directly with a representative who can see the internal notes on your claim. I recommend calling right when they open at 8:00 AM. Be prepared with your claim ID, last 4 of SSN, and the exact dates of your claim. Ask specifically: "What is the status of my payments and is there any information needed to process my claim?

Thanks for the detailed info! I've been trying to call at different times but can never get through. I'll try right at 8 AM tomorrow. Do you think it could be an employer verification thing? My HR department is notoriously slow with paperwork.

I was in the EXACT same situation last month. Tried calling EDD literally 40+ times over 2 weeks and could never get through (always disconnected due to "high call volume"). Finally used this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. Cost me but totally worth it after weeks of trying. The EDD rep found that my employer had submitted conflicting wage info which put a hold on my claim, but it wasn't visible anywhere on my online account. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd and their website is claimyr.com. Just sharing what worked for me after nothing else did!

I've never heard of that service before. I'm desperate at this point so I might try it. Did the rep actually help fix your issue once you got through?

Yeah, once I actually got through to someone, they resolved it pretty quickly. The rep saw notes in my account about the wage verification issue that I couldn't see online. They expedited my case and I got paid within a week after that call.

btw theres also a difference between SDI and PFL, r u on state disability or paid family leave? if ur on PFL when u think ur on SDI that could cause problems too

I'm definitely on SDI - it's for my own medical condition. I'm not taking care of a family member or on maternity leave.

One thing I'd recommend checking - do you have any old EDD accounts? Sometimes if you had unemployment in the past or another disability claim, there can be confusion in the system. Also, did you receive your disability benefit debit card in the mail yet? Sometimes they send the card before processing payments, sometimes after. The "buy week" you mentioned is actually called a "waiting week" - it's the 7-day unpaid period at the beginning of your claim. That's normal and shouldn't be causing your delay. I went through a similar issue in 2024 and found out there was a flag on my account because my doctor used a different diagnosis code on the medical certification than what I put on my initial application. Such a small thing caused a month-long delay!

Thank you for the explanation - yes, I meant waiting week! I haven't received a debit card yet, so maybe that's part of the problem? I do have an old UI account from 2023, but I thought the SDI system was separate?

The SDI system is separate from UI, but they're both under EDD and sometimes there can be account connection issues. As for the debit card, they should have sent one by now if your claim was truly processing normally. That's another sign something is holding up your claim. You absolutely need to speak with someone directly.

To update with the most current information (since some responses here might be outdated): As of 2025, EDD SDI has improved their online portal to show more claim status details, but there are still issues that only appear in the internal system. If your claim shows as "established" but no payments are processing after 30+ days, that's definitely abnormal. The standard processing time is 14 calendar days for electronic claims with no issues. Based on your timeline: - Claim start: February 10, 2025 - Waiting period: February 10-16 (first 7 days are unpaid) - First payable period: February 17-23 - First certification completed: February 24 You should have received payment within 7-10 days of your February 24th certification. The fact that you haven't suggests there's an issue requiring attention. When you do reach a representative, make sure to ask these specific questions: 1. Is there any flag or hold on my claim? 2. Has my medical certification been fully processed? 3. Is there any outstanding information needed from me or my employer? 4. When can I expect my payment to be issued? 5. Can they expedite processing due to financial hardship?

Thank you SO much for breaking down the timeline so clearly. This helps me know for sure something's wrong. I'm definitely going to ask those specific questions when I call tomorrow morning. Really appreciate everyone's help here!

i had disability last year and my first payment took like 6 weeks! but then after that they came regularly. sometimes the first one just takes forever for some reason. hang in there!

I'm going through something similar right now! Been waiting 3 weeks for my first SDI payment and it's so stressful not knowing what's going on. Based on what everyone's saying here, it sounds like there's definitely something holding up your claim that's not showing in your online account. One thing that helped me was checking if I had any old mail from EDD that I might have missed - sometimes they send notices to your mailing address instead of the address on file with your employer. Also, when you do get through to someone, ask them to check if your Social Security number matches exactly what's on file with your employer's payroll system. A friend of mine had a delay because her employer had her SSN with dashes and EDD had it without dashes. Keep trying to call right at 8 AM - I've heard that's really the best time. Don't give up! A month without pay is ridiculous and they need to fix this ASAP.

Oh wow, I never thought about the SSN format thing! That's such a weird technical issue but makes total sense with government systems. I'll definitely ask about that when I call. And you're right about checking for mail - I should double-check if anything got delivered to my old address or got lost. Thanks for the solidarity - it really helps to know I'm not alone in this frustrating situation!
