SDI benefits delayed after returning to work - no payment since December 2024
I'm so frustrated with how slow SDI payments have been. I was out on medical leave but returned to work on January 17th (second week back now). My doctor submitted all the required medical forms back in early December. I've yet to receive ANY benefit payments for the period from 12/05/24 to 01/03/2025. My online account shows they received my claim and I already got the notice about the 7-day waiting period being applied. It's been over six weeks since my doctor submitted everything! My rent is due next week and I'm seriously stressed about making ends meet. Has anyone else experienced such long delays with SDI payments? What's the normal timeframe I should expect? I've tried calling but just get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message every single time.

same thing happened with me last year. took like 8 weeks to get my first payment even tho everything was submitted right. EDD is crazy slow with processing SDI claims especially around holidays

•8 WEEKS?? That's insane! Did you end up getting backpay for all those weeks at least?

Sadly this is pretty common with SDI. The processing timelines are much longer than regular UI claims. A few things to check: 1. Log into SDI Online and make sure your claim shows as "Active" not "Pending" or "Suspended" 2. Verify your doctor submitted the correct dates on your medical certification 3. Check if EDD sent you any notices requesting additional information (they often don't call or email) 4. Make sure your payment method is set up correctly (BofA card or direct deposit) If everything looks correct in your account, it's likely just in the processing queue. SDI claims from December-January typically take 4-6 weeks minimum because of holiday closures and high volume.

•Thank you for the detailed response. My claim does show as "Active" and I've triple-checked all the dates. I haven't received any requests for additional info, but I'll check my mail again just to be sure. My payment method is set to direct deposit which I confirmed is correct. Seems like I'm just stuck in their backlog... but knowing it's somewhat normal helps a bit.

you do realize that SDI is different from UI right?? SDI is state disability insurance and has different processing times than UI which is unemployment insurance. a lot of people mix these up and then wonder why they arent getting paid

•Yes, I know the difference. This is definitely an SDI claim for medical leave, not unemployment. I've been checking my SDI Online portal daily.

This happened to me in November! So frustrating. I tried calling EDD for weeks with no luck - always busy signals or disconnects. I finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in 30 minutes. They explained that my claim had a processing flag because I returned to work before receiving any payments, which apparently requires manual review. The agent was able to push my claim through and I got paid within 3 days after that call. Check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Definitely worth it because waiting around for weeks hoping it resolves itself rarely works with SDI claims.

•Wait, that might be exactly what's happening with mine! I returned to work before getting any payments too. I'm going to try this tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

I process disability claims for a living and I can tell you that your situation sounds like what we call a "return-to-work review" case. When you return to work before payments begin processing, it triggers an automatic review to verify your claim dates. This is because they need to confirm you're not claiming benefits beyond your actual return date. The good news is that you WILL get your full backpay for the period you were out (minus the 7-day waiting period). The bad news is that these reviews take 4-8 weeks to complete, especially during busy periods. One important thing to check: did you properly report your return to work date to EDD? If not, do so immediately as this could further delay your payment.

•That makes so much sense! I did report my return-to-work date through the online portal, but maybe I should call to confirm they have it recorded properly. I'm relieved to hear I'll still get the backpay - that's my biggest concern right now. Thank you for the expert explanation!

EDD IS THE WORST!!! I waited TEN WEEKS for my SDI payment after surgery!!! TEN!!! Called 50+ times and never got through. Then suddenly all the money showed up one day with ZERO explanation. No apology, no nothing. Just "here's your money, sorry we almost made you homeless." The system is completely broken and they don't care about us at all!!!! 🤬🤬🤬

•this is why i always tell people to have like 3 months of expenses saved up if possible before planning any medical leave. EDD is so unreliable with timing

My sister had a baby in December and had a similar issue with her Paid Family Leave (which is processed through the same SDI system). What fixed it for her was having her employer contact EDD directly to confirm her leave dates. Sometimes employers don't respond to EDD's verification requests which can hold up the whole process. Might be worth asking your HR department if they received any verification requests from EDD that they haven't responded to yet.

•That's a great idea I hadn't thought of. I'll talk to HR tomorrow and see if they've gotten any requests from EDD. My company is pretty large so it's possible something got lost in their system.

Update us if you get this resolved! I'm curious if any of these suggestions help speed things up. And if you do call using that service someone mentioned, let us know if that works. SDI delays seem to be getting worse every year.

•Will do! I'm going to try calling with Claimyr tomorrow and also check with my HR department. I'll update here once I know something. Thanks everyone for all the advice and support - feeling less alone in this frustrating situation!
