EDD disability payments suddenly stopped - no notification and can't reach anyone
I've been on SDI for 3 months due to my back surgery and recovery. Everything was going fine with regular payments until now. My doctor submitted the required supplementary certification on January 13, 2025 (I confirmed with their office), but I still haven't received my benefits payment that was due last week. Usually takes about 10 days max for my continuing benefits to process after certification, but it's been over 2 weeks now. Did they just randomly decide to cut me off? Has anyone experienced a random payment gap like this? I've tried logging into my SDI Online account but keep getting an error message, and I've called literally 25+ times but either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Getting desperate as I have rent due soon and can't work yet - doctor says at least 6 more weeks of recovery.

This EXACT same thing happened to me last month!!! My doc sent in the form on Dec 4 and NOTHING for almost 3 weeks! No explanation, no letter, NOTHING. I was panicking like crazy. Found out later they had some "system update" that caused delays but OF COURSE they don't bother telling anyone. Try checking your claim history - sometimes it shows "pending" even if you can't access other account features.

•Thanks for replying! Did you eventually get paid? I'm stressing because I can't even access my claim history - the whole site gives me an error when I try to login. Did you get any backpay for the delayed weeks? I'm wondering if I should try going to an office in person but not sure if that's even possible anymore.

There are a few things that could be happening here: 1. The physician certification might have some missing information or an error that triggered a manual review 2. Your claim might have been randomly selected for additional verification (this happens periodically) 3. You might have reached a benefit period review point (usually occurs at 3-month intervals for longer claims) 4. There could be a system processing delay First, check your mail carefully - EDD often sends notices requesting additional information but they don't email you about these. Second, you might want to have your doctor's office verify exactly what was submitted and if they received any queries back from EDD.

•I didn't get ANY mail from them, I check every day. And my doctor's office swears they submitted everything correctly and haven't heard anything back from EDD. This is so frustrating when you're already dealing with health issues! I wonder if it could be the 3-month review thing you mentioned? But shouldn't they notify me?

I was in the same boat trying to reach EDD about my delayed payments and it was IMPOSSIBLE until I found this service called Claimyr. It connects you directly to an EDD agent and bypasses all the hold times. Worked great for me - I finally got through and found out my claim was on hold because of a system flag. Check out the video of how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The website is claimyr.com. Seriously saved me weeks of stress.

Sometimes what happens is that your certification period might have ended and you need a new period established. When you're approaching the end of your initially approved disability period, there's additional review that happens with supplementary certifications. This is especially common around the 3-month mark. One thing to check is if your original approval letter specified an end date. If you've reached that date, you need both a supplementary medical certification AND a formal extension request. These are two different things that people often confuse. If you can't reach someone by phone, try sending a secure message through SDI Online (when it's working again). Be specific in your message and include your claim number, the date of your doctor's certification, and request status information.

•Omg you might be right. My original approval letter said something about a 12-week initial period, which would be right around now. But my doctor's note clearly stated I need at least 6 more weeks of recovery time. So you're saying even if they got the medical certification, I might have needed to submit something else too? Why wouldn't they just tell me that??

•This is why I tell everyone to ALWAYS call their doctor's office and verify exactly what codes they entered! Learned this the hard way when my pregnancy disability was delayed because they coded it as general disability instead of pregnancy-specific. So many doctors don't understand how these small details affect our benefits!

In my experience, when you hit the three-month mark on SDI, they often do an automatic review since most short-term disability claims are expected to resolve within that timeframe. Your doctor may have submitted the supplementary certification correctly, but if it triggered a review because of the duration, you'd need to speak with an actual claims examiner to resolve it. I'd recommend trying one more specific approach before using a calling service - send a message through SDI Online specifically asking about a "claim duration review" and whether you need to submit a DE2525XX Extension form. Sometimes using their exact terminology gets better results.

•Thank you for this specific advice! I'll try to access the online portal again tonight and send that message using those exact terms. I had no idea there was a separate extension form - my doctor just kept submitting the regular certification form. Really appreciate everyone's help here.

Just wanted to update that I tried the Claimyr service someone mentioned above, and it actually worked! Got through to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes (after trying for DAYS on my own). Found out my claim needed an extension approval because I hit the initial claim period limit. They're expediting it now. Worth it to finally get answers!

•Wait, are you me? Or did you have the same issue? I'm confused because I didn't post about trying that service yet...

•Oh sorry for the confusion! I meant I had a similar situation to yours (payment suddenly stopped after 3 months) and I saw the Claimyr recommendation in this thread so I tried it. Should have been clearer!

If ur doc sent the paperwork Jan 13 but u didn't get paid yet, its prolly sitting in someones inbox at EDD. My cousin works at edd (not disability dept tho) and says theyre SUPER short staffed right now. Like half the normal people. Also check if ur doc sent it to right fax # cuz theres like 5 different ones and if they use wrong one it goes nowhere lol

•Great point about the fax number - I'll call my doctor's office tomorrow and verify which number they sent it to. Didn't even think about that!

Has anybody had their doctor submit the WRONG form completely? I had a nightmare scenario where my doctor's office submitted a regular disability form instead of a pregnancy disability form and it took 6 WEEKS to sort out. Check that they submitted the actual DE2525XX Supplementary Certificate form and not something else.

•This is a great point. The form codes are very similar and easy to mix up. For supplementary certifications, doctors should be using the DE2525XX form specifically. If they used the initial certification form instead (DE2501), it can cause confusion in the system since it's coded as a new claim rather than a continuation.

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD! Turns out I needed a formal extension since I hit my initial approved period of 12 weeks. The supplementary certification from my doctor wasn't enough - I also needed to file an extension request. They're processing it now and said I should see payment within 7-10 days. Thanks for all the advice everyone! Going to double check all my paperwork from now on and keep better track of these deadlines.

•Great news! Yes, this is one of the most common issues with longer disability claims. For anyone else reading this thread who's on disability: mark your calendar for about 2 weeks before your initially approved period ends and proactively ask about extension requirements. The system is designed with the assumption that most claims will end at the initially approved duration.

So glad you got it sorted out! This is exactly why this community is so valuable - EDD's communication is absolutely terrible and they expect people to just magically know about all these different requirements and deadlines. Your experience will definitely help others who run into the same issue. It's crazy that they can't just send a simple notice saying "hey, your initial period is ending, here's what you need to do to continue benefits" instead of just cutting people off with zero explanation. Hope your recovery goes smoothly and you get your backpay soon!

•Absolutely agree! This thread has been so helpful - I wish I had found this community earlier in my disability journey. The lack of communication from EDD is really frustrating, especially when you're already dealing with health issues and financial stress. It's ridiculous that they just stop payments without any explanation or heads up about what forms you need. Really grateful for everyone sharing their experiences here - it makes such a difference to know you're not alone in dealing with this broken system!

This is such a helpful thread for anyone dealing with SDI issues! I'm new to this community but have been lurking for a while. Reading through everyone's experiences really shows how common these communication problems are with EDD. It's absolutely insane that they can just cut off payments without any warning or explanation, especially when people are already vulnerable due to health issues. The fact that there are so many different forms and deadlines that they don't clearly communicate is just cruel. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and solutions - it's clear this community is filling a huge gap that EDD should be addressing themselves. Bookmarking this thread in case I ever need to reference it!

•Welcome to the community! You're so right about EDD's communication being absolutely terrible. I'm still pretty new here too, but this thread has been incredibly eye-opening. It's honestly shocking how many people go through the exact same experience - payments just randomly stopping with zero explanation or notification. What really gets me is that these are people who are already dealing with medical issues and can't work, and then EDD just adds this extra layer of stress and confusion on top of it. This community really is a lifesaver for navigating all the bureaucratic nonsense. Definitely keep this thread bookmarked - the info about extension forms and the different certification codes could save you weeks of headaches if you ever need SDI!

As someone who's been dealing with EDD for years, this thread perfectly captures the nightmare that is their system! @Henrietta Beasley I'm so glad you finally got through and figured out the extension issue - that's exactly the kind of crucial information they should be telling people upfront instead of just cutting off payments. The fact that you had to piece this together from community help rather than clear communication from EDD is absolutely ridiculous. For future reference (and anyone else reading), I've learned to always request a written summary of ALL requirements and deadlines when you first get approved. Most reps won't volunteer this info, but if you specifically ask "what forms will I need and when" they usually have to tell you. Also keep copies of EVERYTHING your doctor submits and get confirmation numbers. EDD loves to claim they never received things. Hope your recovery goes smoothly and you get those backpayments ASAP!

•This is such valuable advice about requesting written summaries upfront! I wish I had known to ask for that when I first got approved - would have saved me so much stress and confusion. The tip about getting confirmation numbers for doctor submissions is brilliant too. It's really sad that we have to treat EDD like they're adversarial rather than helpful, but that seems to be the reality. Thank you for sharing these practical tips - I'm definitely going to implement them going forward. It's frustrating that we have to become experts in navigating their broken system just to get the benefits we're entitled to, but at least this community helps us share that knowledge!

This entire thread is exactly why I joined this community! I'm currently on week 2 of my SDI claim for a knee injury and reading through everyone's experiences has been both terrifying and incredibly helpful. The fact that @Henrietta Beasley had to go through all that stress just to find out about a simple extension requirement that EDD never explained is absolutely maddening. I'm definitely going to call my doctor's office tomorrow to verify they're using the correct forms and fax numbers - never would have thought to check that without reading @Ava Hernandez's comment about the multiple fax numbers. Also going to mark my calendar right now for the 10-week mark to proactively ask about extension requirements. It's ridiculous that we have to become detectives just to get the benefits we've paid into, but thank you all for sharing your knowledge and making this process a little less impossible to navigate!

•Welcome to the community and smart thinking to be proactive! You're absolutely right to mark your calendar for week 10 - I wish I had been that prepared. One more tip I'd add after going through this whole ordeal: when you call your doctor's office, also ask them to send you a copy or photo of exactly what they submit to EDD. That way you can verify all the codes and information are correct before any issues arise. I learned the hard way that sometimes what doctors think they're sending and what actually gets processed can be two different things. Good luck with your recovery and hopefully your claim goes much smoother than mine did!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread! I'm currently dealing with my own SDI issues (payments delayed for over 3 weeks now) and this discussion has been incredibly helpful. The breakdown of the different forms, fax numbers, and extension requirements is exactly the kind of information EDD should be providing upfront but never does. I've already called my doctor's office to verify they used the correct DE2525XX form and got the right fax number - turns out they had been using an outdated number from 2019! Also marking my calendar for proactive extension requests based on everyone's advice here. It's so frustrating that we have to crowdsource this critical information instead of getting clear guidance from EDD, but I'm grateful this community exists. Going to try some of the suggestions mentioned and will update if I learn anything new that might help others!

•Oh wow, your doctor's office was using a 2019 fax number? That's exactly the kind of thing that would cause weeks of delays and nobody would tell you! Really glad you caught that after reading this thread. It's crazy how many little details can derail the whole process - outdated fax numbers, wrong form codes, missing extension requests. This community is honestly doing EDD's job better than they are at this point. Definitely keep us updated on how it goes with the corrected information! Hoping you get your payments sorted out much faster than some of us did. The fact that we all have to become experts in their bureaucratic maze just to get benefits we've earned is so messed up, but at least we can help each other navigate it!

Wow, this thread has been absolutely invaluable! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - been on SDI for carpal tunnel surgery and my payments just stopped after 11 weeks with no explanation. Reading through everyone's experiences, I'm realizing I probably need to submit an extension request since I'm approaching that 12-week mark. The amount of detective work we have to do just to figure out basic requirements is honestly insane. EDD should be required to send out clear notifications about upcoming deadlines and required forms instead of just cutting people off and leaving us to figure it out ourselves. Thank you especially to @Henrietta Beasley for sharing your resolution - knowing that you eventually got through and sorted it out gives me hope! Going to call my doctor's office first thing tomorrow to verify they submitted the right forms to the correct fax number. It's ridiculous that we have to double-check everything like this, but this community has shown me how many things can go wrong behind the scenes. Really grateful for all the specific advice about form codes, extension requirements, and proactive communication strategies!

•I'm so sorry you're going through this too! It's really frustrating how many of us are experiencing the exact same issue - payments stopping around the 11-12 week mark with zero communication from EDD. You're definitely on the right track thinking it might be an extension issue. Based on what I've learned from this thread, I'd suggest when you call your doctor's office tomorrow, specifically ask them to confirm: 1) they used the DE2525XX supplementary form (not the initial DE2501), 2) they sent it to the current disability fax number (not an old one), and 3) whether they received any confirmation or response from EDD. Also, if you can get through to EDD at all, specifically ask about filing a "claim duration review" and whether you need the DE2525XX Extension form - using their exact terminology seems to help. This community has been such a lifesaver for figuring out what EDD should have told us from the beginning. Hoping you get it sorted out quickly and don't have to go through weeks of stress like some of us did!
