SDI payments delayed after 3 weeks - received waiting period notice but still no money
I'm totally confused about my SDI claim timeline. My doctor submitted all my medical documentation on time, and I got the 7-day waiting period notice in the mail about 3 weeks ago. But I still haven't received ANY benefit payments for my claim period (12/05/24 to 01/03/2025). I've already returned to work since January 17th, but there's still zero money in my account! Rent is coming up and I'm getting really anxious. What could be causing this delay? Has anyone experienced something similar with SDI payments? I thought once they acknowledged the waiting period was over, payments would process automatically. Do I need to call them or is this normal processing time?

•5 weeks?? That's insane! Did you have to call them or did it just suddenly show up?

The waiting period acknowledgment doesn't mean your claim is fully processed yet. There are several stages to SDI claim processing: 1) Initial receipt 2) Medical verification 3) Wage verification 4) Final approval 5) Payment issuance. You're probably somewhere between stages 2-4. Since you've already returned to work, make sure you reported your return-to-work date correctly on your continued claim forms. If you didn't receive or complete those forms, that could be causing the delay.

•Wait - continued claim forms? I didn't receive anything like that after my initial application. Was I supposed to be certifying weekly like with regular unemployment? I honestly thought once my doctor submitted the medical paperwork, everything would process automatically.

Ya I had this happen before. Sometimes they need additional info from your doctor and they don't tell you. Best to call and check on status.

For SDI claims, you don't certify weekly like regular unemployment. However, for claims longer than 2 weeks, you typically need to complete a "continued claim certification" form (DE 2500A) which is usually mailed to you. Since you've already returned to work, you'll need to report your return date. I strongly recommend calling to speak with an EDD representative to check your claim status and see if they're waiting for any additional information.

•Good luck getting through on those phone lines though! I had a similar SDI payment delay and spent DAYS trying to reach someone. After getting the "too many callers" message over and over, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through in under 20 minutes. They have this service that basically calls EDD for you and puts you in the callback queue. Saved me so much frustration! They even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Turns out EDD was waiting for a form from my employer that never got submitted.

Did u check ur online EDD account? Sometimes payments get approved but they dont tell u. Also make sure ur address is correct in the system. My roommate had payments sent to her old address.

•Yes, I've been checking my online account obsessively but there's no update. My address is definitely correct because I received the waiting period notice at my current address. It's just so frustrating!

The EXACT same thing happened to me in November!!! I was so angry with EDD because they never told me they needed more information. They were waiting for ME to send something but never bothered to tell me what!! THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN AND DESIGNED TO MAKE PEOPLE GIVE UP!!! I finally got paid after 7 weeks but had to borrow money from family to make rent. It's disgraceful how they treat people.

•7 weeks is ridiculous! Did you ever find out what they needed from you? I'm worried they're expecting something from me but haven't communicated it.

Yeah they said they sent me a form requesting additional info about my medical condition but I NEVER received it. Once I called and got that straightened out, the payment came in like 3 days. DEFINITELY CALL THEM!!

One specific issue that might be affecting your claim: Since your disability period ended on 01/03/2025 and you returned to work on 01/17, there's a disconnect there that might be flagging your claim for review. The system might be waiting for clarification on those dates. Additionally, if your employer's wage reporting doesn't match what's in your claim, that can cause delays. Your best course of action is to contact EDD directly to find out exactly what's holding up your payment.

•That's a really good point about the dates! I'm not sure why I put 01/03 as the end date - my disability was actually through 01/16, and I returned to work on 01/17. Maybe that's causing confusion in their system? I'll definitely mention this when I call. Thank you!

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Turns out they were missing wage verification from my employer. The representative said they sent a request to my company's HR department two weeks ago but never received a response. I immediately called my HR manager who found the form buried in her email. She submitted it today, and the EDD rep said I should see payment within 3-5 business days. So relieved to finally know what was happening! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

•Great news! This is a common issue with SDI claims. For anyone else experiencing delays, always check if your employer has received and responded to wage verification requests. Glad you got it resolved!
