EDD SDI application stuck in limbo for 3+ weeks - can't reach anyone by phone!
I'm seriously stressing out about my disability claim. I submitted my SDI application online on January 15th and my doctor sent in the medical certification form by January 17th. It's now been more than 3 weeks and my claim is still showing 'pending' in the system. I've been trying to call EDD every single day (sometimes 15+ calls per day) but keep getting the automated message that they're at 'maximum call volume' and to 'try again later.' I'm running out of savings and need to know if there's an issue with my application or how much longer I need to wait. Has anyone dealt with this recently? Is there some secret to actually getting through to a human being at EDD? I've tried calling at different times of the day with no luck. This waiting game is making my anxiety disorder even worse!

•6 weeks?! I can't wait that long. I'll try the 8am trick tomorrow. Did they explain why it took so long when you finally got through?

The processing times have been extremely slow lately. It's unfortunately normal for claims to take 3-4 weeks to process even when everything is submitted correctly. However, it's also possible there's something missing that they need but haven't notified you about. Have you checked your SDI Online account for any messages or alerts? Sometimes they request additional information but don't call you. Also, check your mail carefully - they often send paper notices instead of electronic ones.

•I've been checking my SDI Online account obsessively and there's nothing in the messages section. No mail either. It just shows 'pending' with no explanation. If they need something, why wouldn't they tell me? The waiting is the worst part.

Same thing happened to me last month. I think they're just REALLY backed up right now. Mine took almost 5 weeks to process and then suddenly the money appeared in my account with no notification or anything. I didn't change anything or talk to anyone. I think there's a huge backlog.

•This happened to my sister too! Just suddenly got approved after weeks of silence. EDD is weird like that

Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to an actual EDD representative on the phone. I was in your exact situation and was going crazy trying to reach someone. I found Claimyr and they got me connected to an EDD agent in about 25 minutes. Website is claimyr.com - there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. It was honestly a lifesaver for figuring out what was going on with my claim.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Thanks for sharing the video link, I'll check it out.

•I tried Claimyr when I had issues with my pregnancy disability claim. It did get me through to someone but the EDD rep still couldn't really help me. Just told me to keep waiting lol. But at least I talked to a human!

A few other things to check: 1) Make sure your employer completed their portion of the claim if required, 2) Verify your doctor used the correct diagnosis code on the medical certification, and 3) Double-check that your last date worked and first date of disability match on both your application and doctor's certification. Any discrepancies can cause delays without notification. Also, if you have multiple employers or changed jobs recently, that can slow things down considerably.

•This is helpful - thank you! I didn't realize the dates needed to match exactly. I think my doctor put January 14th as my first day of disability but I put January 15th on my application. Could that one-day difference really cause a delay?

•Yes, unfortunately even a one-day discrepancy can trigger a manual review, which adds significant time to processing. The system is looking for exact matches. If you can get through to someone at EDD, they can often resolve this quickly, but otherwise it just sits in a queue for manual processing.

I HATE the EDD phone system with a PASSION!!! been dealing with them for years with my chronic condition and EVERY TIME it's the same garbage. they have the WORST customer service of any govt agency and that's saying something!!! i've had better luck contacting my state assembly person's office - they have EDD liaisons who can sometimes get info faster than we can. Google your district's assembly member and look for their casework contact info.

•That's a really good idea, I didn't think about contacting my assembly member. I'll look into that tomorrow. And yes, I don't understand why they can't at least have a better phone system in 2025!

Just double-checking - you're looking at the correct claim, right? Sometimes people accidentally look at old claims on the SDI Online portal. Make sure you're viewing your January 2025 claim and not a previous one. Also, did you receive any kind of confirmation number when you first applied? That can help when you finally reach someone.

•Good point! I just checked and yes, I'm looking at the right claim - it shows the January 15th filing date. And I do have my confirmation number saved from when I initially filed. Fingers crossed I can reach someone soon.

One more thing to note - there's a 7-day waiting period for SDI benefits where you won't receive payment. So even though you filed on January 15th, your benefits wouldn't start until January 22nd. However, your claim should still show as approved rather than pending by now. The waiting period just affects when payments begin, not the approval process.

•Thanks for clarifying that. I was aware of the waiting period, but you're right that it shouldn't affect whether the claim is approved or not. That makes me even more concerned that something is wrong with my application. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned above to see if I can get answers.

My cousins friend works at EDD and she says they got hit with a massive surge of claims in January so theyre all working overtime trying to catch up. She said if everything is correct on your application it will eventually process but theres like thousands of claims backed up. Just letting you know what I heard.

Update: I finally got my claim approved! After trying for weeks to reach someone at EDD with no luck, I used Claimyr and got connected to a representative who found that my claim needed additional medical information. My doctor had used an outdated form, which the EDD rep was able to explain exactly what was needed. Once my doctor sent in the right form, my claim was approved within 3 days. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to figure out what's going on!

•That's great news! It's so frustrating that they couldn't just send a notice about the outdated form. I'm definitely going to try Claimyr tomorrow. Thanks for sharing your success story and giving me some hope!
