EDD SDI claim delay after doctor submitted extension paperwork - anyone experience this?
I've been on disability for the past 8 weeks due to a back injury from a work accident. My doctor initially certified me for 8 weeks, but at my follow-up appointment last week, he said I'd need at least 4 more weeks for recovery and submitted the extension paperwork right away. It's now been 6 days since he sent in the extension form, but I haven't seen any update on my SDI Online account. My last payment was scheduled for yesterday (which would've been the end of my initial claim period), but nothing's showing up yet. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for EDD to process disability extensions? I'm getting worried since I've got rent due next week and was counting on that payment. My first claim went through super smoothly with payments starting only 10 days after filing, so I'm surprised this extension is taking longer. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

•Two weeks??? Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Did you have to do anything special to move it along, or just wait it out?

Extensions always take longer than initial claims, unfortunately. The system is designed to process new claims quickly, but extensions require manual review in many cases. In my experience as someone who's been through multiple SDI claims, you should expect 7-10 business days for an extension to be processed. If your doctor used DE 2525XX form (Supplemental Certificate) and submitted it properly, you shouldn't need to do anything else. One important thing to check: log into your SDI Online account and make sure there are no "New Messages" or items requiring your attention. Sometimes EDD needs additional information for extensions that they don't need for initial claims.

•Thank you for this detailed response! I just checked and don't see any messages or action items in my account. I guess I'll try to be patient, but it's stressful when bills are due. I'm definitely bookmarking your comment about the 7-10 business day timeline.

my sister just went through this with her pregnancy disability when she needed to extend. they made her wait like 12 days and then made her verify her identity AGAIN even though she already did that for the initial claim!!! so annoying

•This isn't quite the same situation. Pregnancy disability can have different rules and requirements for extensions vs. regular disability. For pregnancy disability, they sometimes need to verify it's still pregnancy-related and not transitioning to bonding (which would be PFL). But it's definitely frustrating either way!

I HATE waiting for EDD to process ANYTHING!!! Their systems are ANCIENT and BROKEN!! When I had my shoulder surgery last year, they made me wait THREE WHOLE WEEKS after my extension paperwork was submitted. I called literally 47 times (I counted) and could never get through to anyone. By the time they finally processed it, I was already two weeks late on my car payment and got hit with late fees. The whole disability system is designed to make us suffer while we're already dealing with health issues. It's CRIMINAL how they treat disabled workers!!!!

•That sounds horrible! I really hope mine doesn't take three weeks. Did you ever figure out what caused the delay in your case?

•I understand the frustration with waiting, but there are actually ways to reach EDD representatives more efficiently. I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an EDD agent in under 5 minutes when I was dealing with my own extension issues. They basically navigate the phone system for you and call you back when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of redial frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd They helped me resolve my extension delay - turned out there was a discrepancy between the dates my doctor submitted and my previous claim end date that was causing the holdup.

hey dont stress to much about it. my doctor has extended my claim 3 times for my back injury and each time it took about 8-9 days to get the next payment. its just how they work i guess

•Thanks for sharing that. It helps to hear from someone who's been through it multiple times. I'll try to be patient for another few days.

One more thing I forgot to mention: if your extension goes beyond 31 days from your original claim's start date, you might need to fill out a continued claim certification form (DE 2500A) yourself. This is separate from your doctor extending your disability period. Check your SDI Online account to see if there's a form waiting for you to complete. In my last disability claim (back surgery in February 2025), I had to complete these certification forms every two weeks even though my doctor had certified me for 12 weeks total. It's confusing because the initial process doesn't always make this clear.

•Oh! I didn't know about this at all. I just checked and there is actually a form waiting for me to complete. Thank you so much for mentioning this - maybe that's what's causing the delay. I'm going to fill it out right now.

•Happy to help! This happens to a lot of people. The system doesn't always notify you clearly about these forms. After you complete it, your payment should process within 2-3 business days unless there are other issues with your claim. Make sure to check for these forms every two weeks while you're on disability.

I went through something similar about 6 months ago with my knee surgery recovery. My doctor submitted the extension paperwork and it took about 9 days to show up in my account. What really helped was calling the EDD disability line (1-800-480-3287) around 8am right when they opened - I actually got through on my third try and they were able to tell me the extension was received and being processed. The rep mentioned that extensions sometimes take longer because they have to verify the medical information matches your original claim. Hang in there, it should come through soon!

•Thank you for the tip about calling at 8am! I'm definitely going to try that tomorrow morning. It's reassuring to know that 9 days is pretty typical. I was starting to panic that something went wrong with my paperwork, but it sounds like this is just how long their system takes to process extensions.
