I had no idea about this! My disability started in October 2024, so that would definitely affect my base period. I'll make sure to ask about the special base period calculation. That could make a big difference in my weekly amount.
I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - just got cleared to return to work after 5 months on SDI for a knee injury, but my company downsized while I was out. Reading through all these responses is so helpful! Quick question for anyone who's been through this - did EDD ask for any documentation proving your position was eliminated while you were on disability? Like a letter from HR or something? I want to make sure I have everything ready before I submit my application. Also @Lim Wong - definitely listen to everyone about using your actual last work day from October. That seems to be the mistake that causes the most headaches based on what people are saying here.
Hey @TechNinja! I'm new to this community but going through something similar - my SDI just ended and I'm about to file for UI. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like you should definitely have some kind of documentation about your position being eliminated. Maybe an email from HR or your manager explaining the downsizing? Even if EDD doesn't ask for it upfront, having it ready could save you headaches later if they need to verify your separation reason during the interview process. Good luck with your application!
my sister had something similar happen last year after her c-section delivery... her disability claim got lost in the mail and she had to go thru this whole process to get it fixed... actually i think she had to goto an edd office in person to get it straightened out? might be worth checking if theres an office near you that takes walk-ins if you can't get through on the phone
That's a good idea, I hadn't thought about going in person. Did she make an appointment first or just show up? I'll look up if there's an office near me.
I'm so sorry you're going through this stress! I had a similar experience after my gallbladder surgery in January - it's absolutely nerve-wracking when you're recovering and worried about money. From what everyone has shared here, it sounds like your best bet is to file a new claim online through SDI Online right away while also trying to get through to speak with someone. The fact that nothing is showing up in your "View Claim History" after 3+ weeks is definitely a red flag that your original paperwork may have been lost. One thing that helped me was calling the SDI number (1-800-480-3287) right at 8:00 AM when they open - I had better luck getting through early in the morning. Also, if you do get through to someone, definitely mention that you're facing financial hardship due to the delay. They have options to expedite claims in those situations. Hang in there - you will get through this! The system is frustrating but you deserve those benefits, especially after surgery.
Pro tip: If you can, try logging into your account late at night or very early in the morning. Sometimes the system updates then and you might catch new info before they send an official notice.
I just went through something similar last month! Got one of those vague "claim update" notices and was freaking out. Turns out it was just a routine system update - my payments weren't affected at all. Here's what I did that helped: 1) Logged into my UI Online account immediately to see if there were any changes, 2) Checked if my certification schedule was still the same, 3) Made sure my payment method info was still correct. Most of the time these updates are administrative and don't impact your benefits. If you see any actual changes in your account or if your next payment doesn't come through as expected, THEN it's time to worry and try calling. Hope this eases some anxiety! 🤞
Just wanted to add my experience for future readers - I had a similar 6-week delay with my SDI claim last year. What I learned is that EDD often has issues with employer wage verification that cause these long delays. In my case, my employer had reported different quarterly wages than what I expected, which triggered a manual review. The frustrating part is that EDD doesn't proactively tell you what's causing the delay - you have to get through to an agent to find out. I ended up contacting my state senator's office (not just assembly member) and they were able to get my claim moving within a week. They have dedicated EDD liaisons who can actually see what's happening with your claim. Don't give up - these delays are unfortunately common but they do get resolved!
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's so frustrating that EDD doesn't communicate what's causing delays - you shouldn't have to become a detective just to find out why your claim is stuck. The employer wage verification issue seems to be a really common problem based on what everyone's sharing here. I'm curious - when you contacted your state senator's office, did you use a specific form or just call them directly? And how long did it take them to get back to you after you reached out?
I'm new to this community but unfortunately not new to EDD delays! I've been waiting 5 weeks for my SDI claim and reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and terrifying. It sounds like the wage verification issues are super common - my employer uses ADP for payroll so I'm wondering if that could be causing problems with how they report to EDD? Has anyone else had issues specifically with ADP or other third-party payroll companies? Also seeing all the success stories with assembly members and state senators gives me hope. I'm in San Diego County so I'll be looking up my representatives today. Thanks for sharing all your experiences - at least now I know I'm not alone in this nightmare!

I feel your pain, OP. I've been on disability for 3 months now and it's been a wild ride. Hang in there!

Hey Liam! I went through this same confusion a few months ago. Here's what worked for me: 1. If you have a claim number, you can sometimes check your status online through the EDD portal 2. Your doctor's office should have a copy of the form they submitted - they can tell you the duration they certified 3. The payment start date is typically 8 days after your disability began (there's a 7-day waiting period) 4. If you got any paperwork when you first applied, look for an "Award Notice" - it usually has all the key dates I know the phone lines are brutal, but if you can get through, they can give you exact dates. The early morning calling tip someone mentioned really does help! Don't give up - once you get the info, it makes everything so much clearer. 🤞
