EDD extended my disability claim without me asking - will this mess up my new PFL application?
So confused right now! I've been on SDI for a chronic back condition since January 23, 2025. My doctor initially approved me for 10 weeks with an expected return to work date of April 4th. I was planning my transition back and decided to apply for Paid Family Leave to care for my elderly father who just had surgery. I submitted my PFL application this Monday, but when I checked my EDD account today, I noticed they somehow extended my disability claim for another 3 weeks (until April 25th)! I did NOT request this extension and my doctor hasn't mentioned submitting any additional certification. Has this happened to anyone else? Will this automatic extension mess up my PFL claim since they overlap? I really need the PFL to start ASAP and I'm worried about the gap in payments. Anyone know if I need to cancel the disability extension or will EDD figure it out? So stressed about this!

This happened to me last year! Your doctor probably did submit updated paperwork without telling you. Call them first to check. You'll need to cancel the disability extension before your PFL can start - they CANNOT overlap or you'll end up with an overpayment notice later. EDD won't "figure it out" - they'll just pay both and then demand money back later.

•OMG thank you! I'll call my doctor's office right away! Do you think I should also try contacting EDD to explain the situation? I'm so worried my PFL will get delayed and I won't have income while caring for my dad :

You need to contact EDD immediately to clarify this situation. This is likely a system error or miscommunication from your medical provider. SDI and PFL cannot overlap as they're both administered through the same program. Here's what you should do: 1) Call your doctor to confirm if they submitted an extension 2) Contact EDD to explain the situation 3) Request that your SDI claim end on the original date 4) Confirm your PFL start date If you wait, this could result in benefit delays or even overpayment issues that you'll have to repay later.

•Thank you for the clear steps! I'll start with my doctor tomorrow morning. I've been trying to call EDD but can't get through - keeps saying high call volume and disconnecting me after 30 minutes on hold 😩

I had somethin similar happen 2 me. Check ur disability history in ur account - sometimes they automatically extend if ur doctor put a different date in their form than what u thought. Mine was extended for 3 more weeks cuz doctor put wrong date. U should be able 2 see the form details in ur EDD account under claim history.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I just checked and the claim history just shows 'extension approved' but doesn't say why or who requested it... so frustrating!

I've helped several clients with this exact situation. This is a common issue with the transition from SDI to PFL. Here's what's happening: when you applied for PFL, the system detected your open SDI claim. The system sometimes automatically extends the SDI claim rather than processing a new benefit type. You need to contact EDD immediately to resolve this. Specifically request that they: 1) End your SDI claim on the original end date 2) Process your PFL claim with the start date you requested Do this ASAP as it can take 1-2 weeks to correct in their system once you report it, and each week's delay means a delay in your PFL payments.

•Thank you for explaining this! That makes perfect sense - the systems probably got confused. I've been trying to call EDD for two days with no luck. Is there another way to contact them about this urgent issue?

Try using Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent faster. I was in the same situation trying to fix an overlap between disability and PFL and spent days trying to reach someone. Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd and their website is claimyr.com. Seriously saved me weeks of stress and prevented my benefits from being delayed further.

•I've never heard of this service before! Just watched the video - that looks really helpful. I'm going to try it tomorrow morning. Did you have any issues using it? Was the EDD agent able to fix your overlap problem?

•No issues at all. The EDD agent was able to fix everything while I was on the phone. They adjusted the end date of my disability claim and confirmed when my PFL would start. Got my first PFL payment about 5 days later. Much better than waiting weeks for someone to call back!

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME THREE MONTHS AGO!!!!! The EDD system is GARBAGE. My doctor actually DID submit an extension without telling me because their office automatically does it if you don't explicitly tell them to stop! Then I had to wait SIX WEEKS to get my PFL approved because the disability was "still active" and no one at EDD would help me!!! You need to: 1) Get a letter from your doctor saying your disability should end on your original end date 2) Submit it through your EDD account under "Contact Us" 3) ALSO mail a physical copy to the EDD office 4) Call them EVERY DAY until someone fixes it Don't trust them to handle this correctly! DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!!!

•Oh no, that sounds awful! SIX WEEKS?? I can't wait that long - my dad needs help now and I won't have any income. I'll definitely get that letter from my doctor. Thanks for the warning about documenting everything.

Another thing to consider - if you're transitioning from SDI to PFL, make sure you're using the right form. If you're caring for a family member, you need the DE 2501F form, not the regular disability form. Just mentioning this because it's a common mix-up that can cause delays.

•Yes, I used the DE 2501F form for the PFL application and my dad's doctor already completed their certification part. Everything was submitted correctly on the PFL side - it's just this mysterious disability extension that appeared out of nowhere that's causing problems!

my sister works for a dr office and says they sometmes extend disability claims automatically if the patient hasnt been seen for a followup yet. did u have a final checkup with ur dr before the end date?

•That's interesting! I did have a follow-up appointment last week, and the doctor said I was cleared to return to work on the original date. Maybe their office staff submitted something by mistake after? I'll definitely call them tomorrow.

Update: I've had several clients resolve this successfully by doing the following: 1) Have your doctor fax a "Disability Claim Closure Request" (they should know what this is) to EDD specifying the exact end date 2) Once that's processed (usually 2-3 business days), your PFL claim should automatically activate If you need this resolved immediately, calling is still your best option. Be very specific with the agent about needing to close the disability claim on the original expected return-to-work date so your PFL can begin.

•Thank you so much! Just called my doctor this morning and they're sending the closure request today. They admitted someone in their office probably checked the wrong box on a form which triggered the extension. Really appreciate everyone's help!

•Will do! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and actually got through to EDD this morning! The agent confirmed my doctor sent in a correction and they're processing it now. She said my PFL should start on time with no gap. Such a relief!
