Need to cancel PFL start date after SDI extension - urgent help needed!

I messed up and need advice asap! My doctor just extended my pregnancy disability leave for another 2 weeks due to complications from my c-section, but I had already submitted my baby bonding PFL claim to start next Monday (thinking my SDI would end then). Now I'm panicking because I don't want to lose those 2 weeks of disability benefits since they pay more than PFL would. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Can I call EDD to push back my PFL start date, or do I need to cancel the whole claim and resubmit? I'm so worried about messing up my benefits and creating a gap in payments. Help!

this happened to me too! u need to call edd RIGHT AWAY and tell them u want to move the pfl date. the rep told me they can adjust it as long as u catch it before the first payment goes out

Thank you! Did you get through to them on the first try? I've been calling the main number and can't get past the automated system. I'm panicking thinking about losing those 2 weeks of higher payments.

You definitely need to contact EDD directly to cancel or modify your PFL start date since you've already submitted the claim. This is actually a fairly common situation when disability gets extended unexpectedly. Important: Do NOT submit a new PFL claim until you've confirmed the first one is cancelled or you risk creating a mess in their system. When you call, specifically request to speak with a PFL specialist who can help with "claim date modification due to SDI extension." Make sure to have your claim IDs for both your SDI and PFL claims ready. You won't lose any weeks of PFL eligibility - you're just shifting the start date. The system is designed to accommodate these medical changes.

Thank you for this detailed info! I've been trying to call for 2 days now but keep getting disconnected after waiting forever. Is there any other way to contact them? I tried sending a message through the online portal but haven't heard back.

When I had my PFL last summer I had the EXACT same issue!! Called over 30 times and never got through. SO FRUSTRATING! EDD phone system is the absolute worst... especially when ur home with a newborn and can't spend all day on the phone! Good luck!!

Same here but I got through after like 20 tries... their system hangs up on you when there's too many people in queue which is just CRUEL. I spent 3 days calling non-stop while nursing my twins. Eventually got a nice lady who fixed it in 5 minutes. Ridiculous we have to go through this right after giving birth!!

I know the frustration of trying to reach EDD - it can seem impossible. I actually had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I needed to adjust my PFL dates after my disability got extended. They connect you with an EDD representative without you having to keep calling and getting disconnected. Saved me hours of frustration - you can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Once I got through to a rep, they were able to adjust my PFL start date on the spot. Just be super clear about having an SDI extension and needing to move your PFL date. They'll need both claim numbers.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I'll check out that service today. At this point I'm desperate to talk to someone at EDD before Monday when my PFL is supposed to start. I can't afford to miss out on those extra SDI benefits!

I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now!!!! My doc extended my SDI for postpartum anxiety but my PFL was already approved to start next week and I can't get anyone on the phone either. Following this thread and hoping for answers. The whole system is so broken. Why can't we just do this stuff online?????

EDD PFL specialist here - let me clarify how to handle this situation properly: 1. You MUST contact EDD to modify your PFL start date when you have an SDI extension. This cannot be done online currently. 2. You need to request the specific date change based on your new SDI end date. The claims system requires telephone verification of this change to prevent overlapping benefits. 3. Documentation is key - have your doctor send the updated medical certification directly to EDD with your claim number clearly marked. This substantiates your SDI extension. 4. Call the dedicated PFL line (not the general EDD line) at 877-238-4373. Hours are 8am-5pm weekdays. 5. If you receive any payments that overlap, do NOT cash/deposit them as this creates an overpayment situation that's complicated to resolve. This is a routine adjustment that EDD handles regularly, but it does require direct contact with a specialist.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above, and the EDD rep was able to push my PFL start date back by the 2 weeks. She said exactly what you mentioned - that they needed to verify it by phone. Such a relief! Now I just need to make sure my doctor sent in that updated medical certification.

glad u got through!! one more thing - make sure u check ur online account in a few days to confirm the change actually went thru. sometimes they say they fixed it but then it doesn't update in the system. happened to my sister and she ended up with a big mess!

That's a great tip, thank you! I just checked and don't see any updates yet. The rep said it might take 24-48 hours to reflect in the system. I'll keep checking and call back if I don't see the change by Monday.

I went through this whole annoying process last year when my c-section got infected and my disability got extended. The most important thing is to KEEP CALLING until you get through. Also, make sure you understand the difference between SDI (your disability from pregnancy/birth) and PFL (baby bonding). They're totally different programs even though they're both through EDD. My doctor thought they could just extend my "maternity leave" but didn't understand there are two separate benefits.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yes, I definitely understand the difference between SDI and PFL - that's exactly why I'm trying to extend the SDI and push back PFL. My SDI pays about $140 more per week than my PFL would, so I don't want to lose those two weeks of higher payment! I got through to EDD finally and they said they fixed it, just waiting for it to show in the system.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out! For anyone else reading this thread with similar issues, remember that transitions between SDI and PFL are one of the most common complications in the California paid leave system. Always try to build in a buffer of a few days when planning your leave dates to account for these kinds of extensions or changes. Also, when your doctor extends your disability, make sure they submit the updated medical certification ASAP. The date on that documentation is what officially establishes your SDI end date, which in turn affects when your PFL can begin. EDD uses these official medical documents to make determinations.

This is such helpful information for anyone dealing with SDI/PFL transitions! I'm currently 8 months pregnant and planning my leave, so reading through this thread has been really eye-opening. I had no idea that doctor extensions could create these kinds of complications with the timing. Definitely going to talk to my HR department about building in that buffer you mentioned @Sofia Morales. It sounds like the key is being proactive and not assuming everything will go exactly as planned. Thank you @Fatima Al-Suwaidi for sharing your experience - it's so stressful dealing with this stuff when you're already dealing with recovery and a new baby!

@Luca Greco You re'so smart to be thinking about this ahead of time! I wish I had known about these potential complications before I was dealing with them postpartum. One thing I d'also suggest is getting familiar with the EDD online portal now while you re'not stressed and sleep-deprived. And definitely save that Claimyr service info that @Ava Garcia shared - it was a lifesaver when I couldn t get'through on the phone. The whole experience taught me that having backup plans for your backup plans is really important with California s leave'system!

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm a new mom who went through something similar 3 months ago when my recovery from an emergency c-section took longer than expected. Just wanted to add that when you do get through to EDD, write down the representative's name and reference number for your call. I had to call back twice because the first change didn't process correctly, and having that information made the second call much smoother. Also, don't panic if you see any weird status updates in your online account during the transition - mine showed conflicting dates for about a week before everything sorted out properly. The system definitely has quirks but it does work eventually!

@Zoe Gonzalez That s'such great advice about writing down the rep s'name and reference number! I m'actually dealing with a similar situation right now where my PFL got approved but then my doctor extended my SDI for postpartum complications. Reading through this whole thread has been so reassuring - it s'nice to know this is a common issue and not just me being disorganized! I m'going to try that Claimyr service tomorrow since I ve'been getting nowhere with the regular phone lines. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences, especially @Fatima Al-Suwaidi for starting this thread. It s so'helpful to have real people s experiences'instead of just trying to decode EDD s confusing'website!

I'm currently going through this exact situation too! My disability got extended due to postpartum depression, but I had already filed my PFL claim to start next week. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been so helpful - especially knowing that this is actually pretty common. I tried calling EDD yesterday but couldn't get through after 2 hours of trying. Going to check out that Claimyr service that @Ava Garcia mentioned since so many people had success with it. It's really reassuring to know that EDD can adjust the dates as long as you catch it in time. Thanks @Fatima Al-Suwaidi for posting this and to everyone who shared their tips! It's such a relief to know I'm not alone in dealing with this confusing system while trying to recover and care for a newborn.

@Lauren Wood I m'so glad this thread is helping you too! I went through something very similar with postpartum anxiety extending my SDI. The whole situation is stressful enough without having to navigate EDD s'complicated system. Just wanted to add that when you do get through to them, make sure to ask for confirmation that your PFL start date has been pushed back AND that there won t'be any gap in your benefits. The rep I spoke with was really helpful once I finally connected, but it took using that Claimyr service to actually get through. Hang in there - it s'frustrating but definitely fixable! Also, don t'feel bad about the timing mix-up - I think most of us underestimate how long recovery actually takes, especially when mental health complications come into play.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now and this thread has been so incredibly helpful! I'm 3 weeks postpartum and my doctor just extended my SDI for another week due to breastfeeding complications, but my PFL was already approved to start Monday. I've been stressing about this all weekend thinking I'd lose benefits or create some kind of overpayment issue. Reading everyone's experiences here, especially @Fatima Al-Suwaidi's successful resolution, has given me so much peace of mind. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service first thing Monday morning since it seems like multiple people had success with it. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to jump through these hoops when we're already dealing with recovery and newborn care, but at least knowing it's fixable makes it less overwhelming. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories - this community is such a lifesaver for navigating California's confusing benefits system!
