Can I apply for PFL baby bonding immediately after SDI pregnancy disability ends or must I wait for final payment?
Just finished my 17 weeks of pregnancy disability leave yesterday (had some complications that extended it beyond the usual time). Today would technically be my first eligible day for baby bonding PFL, but I'm wondering about the timing of my application. Can I go ahead and submit my PFL claim application today, or am I supposed to wait until after I receive my final SDI payment? The EDD website is super vague about this transition timing and I don't want to mess up my benefits by applying too early. I've heard horror stories about claims getting delayed for weeks because of simple timing errors!

You can absolutely apply for your PFL today! Don't wait for your final SDI payment to hit your account. The key is that your disability claim period has ended, which it has. File your DE2508 form for PFL today to avoid any gap in benefits. When you apply online, there's a section asking if this claim is for the same reason as a previous disability claim - make sure to select that you're transitioning from pregnancy disability to baby bonding.

•Thank you so much! I was stressing about this all morning. Will start the application right now before my little one wakes up from her nap.

Congrats on the baby! I just went thru this in February. Apply today 100%. The system knows ur transitioning from pregnancy to bonding and they expect u to apply right away. I waited 2 days thinking I needed to get my last disability payment first and it created a GAP in my payments that took forever to fix!!

•Oh wow, that's exactly what I was worried about! Definitely applying today then. Did you need to provide any additional medical info for the transition or was it pretty straightforward?

•Super easy! No medical docs needed for baby bonding part. Just baby's birth certificate info and ur employment details. The bonding part is way easier than the pregnancy disability stuff.

I DISAGREE WITH EVERYONE HERE!! When I transitioned from SDI to PFL in 2024, I was specifically told by an EDD rep to WAIT until I received my last disability payment before filing for PFL. Something about their system getting confused if the claims overlap. This might be why so many people have transition problems.

•That advice is incorrect and unfortunately is why many claimants experience benefit gaps. The official EDD guidance states you should apply for PFL as soon as your disability claim ends. The systems don't get confused - they're designed to handle the transition. What creates problems is waiting too long and creating a gap between benefits.

•Well that's what the EDD person literally told me on the phone! So frustrating how different reps give completely different information. The whole system is a mess.

Has anyone used Claimyr to get through to an actual EDD rep? I had this same transition question last month and was going crazy trying to get someone on the phone. Tried for DAYS. Finally used claimyr.com and they got me connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Definitely worth it for peace of mind on something this important.

•I used Claimyr too! Honestly saved my sanity during my maternity leave transition. EDD's regular phone line is basically useless - I think I tried calling 11 times before giving up and trying Claimyr.

To clarify what everyone is saying: you need to apply for PFL *immediately* after your pregnancy disability ends, which means TODAY in your case. Here's the official process: 1. Your pregnancy disability claim ended yesterday 2. File your PFL claim today using form DE2508 (or online) 3. You'll still receive your final SDI payment for the previous period 4. Your PFL benefits will begin processing for today forward The confusion happens because people think these systems talk to each other automatically - they don't. You must initiate the PFL claim separately, but you should do it without any gap days between the end of SDI and start of PFL.

•This is super helpful, thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I'm halfway through the online application now. One question - it's asking if I want my PFL claim to start today or another date. I should put today, right?

•Yes, today! That's exactly right. Put today's date as the start date since that's your first day off disability. This ensures continuous benefits with no gaps.

y do they make this so complicated???? i swear the edd system is designed to confuse new parents when we're already sleep deprived 🤦♀️ my cousin had her baby in march and ended up with like a 3 week gap between benefits cuz nobody explained this stuff

•I know right?? I've been reading their website for weeks and still couldn't figure this out. They should really have a simple checklist or timeline specifically for pregnancy-to-bonding transitions.

Make sure when u fill out the PFL form that u mark it as BABY BONDING not CAREGIVING! My friend got her claim denied bcuz she clicked the wrong option, had to appeal and wait 6 extra weeks for money!!

•Thanks for the warning! I was careful to select baby bonding on the form. These small details seem to make such a big difference in how they process the claim.

I want to share one more thing that trips people up with the SDI to PFL transition. If your SDI claim was extended beyond the standard time due to your complications, make absolutely sure that your doctor has submitted the final medical certification with a clear end date. Sometimes this is where claims get stuck - when the disability end date isn't clearly documented. This ensures a clean transition to PFL.

•That's actually really good to know. My OB did submit that final certification form last week stating yesterday as my recovery end date. Hopefully that means everything is in order for a smooth transition!

Just wanted to update everyone - I successfully submitted my PFL application today and it went through without any issues! The online system was actually pretty straightforward once I got started. For anyone else in this situation, here's what I learned: 1) Apply immediately after your disability ends (don't wait for final payment), 2) Select "baby bonding" not "caregiving", 3) Make sure your doctor submitted the final medical cert with a clear end date, and 4) put today's date as your PFL start date to avoid gaps. Thanks to everyone who helped clarify this - you probably saved me weeks of headaches! 🙏
