Confusion about SDI to PFL transition timing - do I apply for baby bonding today or wait?
Just got my final pregnancy disability payment today (yay!) and I'm now 5 weeks postpartum. My official SDI return-to-work date is set for 4/29/2025, but I'm totally confused about when I should file for baby bonding PFL. Do I need to wait until my disability officially ends on 4/29 before applying, or should I submit my PFL claim today? Also, there's like 6 extra days between my last disability payment and my RTW date - will those days just go unpaid or should my PFL automatically kick in to cover them? I'm worried about creating a gap in benefits. First-time mom here and completely overwhelmed by all these different benefits!

You should apply for PFL right away! Don't wait until your disability ends or you'll create an unnecessary gap. The EDD recommends filing for baby bonding PFL 1-2 weeks before your disability claim ends. You'll get a transition prompt in your UI Online account, but sometimes it doesn't appear when it should, so it's better to be proactive.

•Thank you! I'll check my UI Online account right now. I was waiting for some kind of notification but haven't seen anything yet. Do you know if those 6 days between my last payment and my official RTW date will be covered by something?

•Thanks so much! So relieved to hear from someone who just went through this. Did you call EDD or were you able to apply online without problems?

Apply immediately to avoid any gap in benefits! The system is designed for PFL to seamlessly follow SDI, but you need to initiate the PFL claim yourself - it doesn't happen automatically. Here's exactly how it works: 1. Your disability claim coverage ends on your Return to Work date (4/29) 2. Your PFL claim should start the day after your disability ends 3. Those 6 days you mentioned WILL be covered by PFL if you file now 4. You'll get 8 weeks of PFL total for baby bonding If you don't see the transition link in your UI Online account, call EDD directly to start your claim. Don't wait for the prompt - sometimes it never appears!

•This is so helpful, thank you! I've been trying to call all morning but it's impossible to get through. The phone system just disconnects me after saying they're experiencing high call volume. Is there another way to apply if the online system isn't showing the PFL option?

I went through the EXACT same thing last month and spent TWO DAYS trying to get someone on the phone! The system is SO frustrating!! My disability ended but no PFL link appeared in my account. What worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me connected to an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes who processed my PFL application over the phone. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Once I got through, the rep explained that there's often a system glitch with the transition prompt not appearing. They handled everything and my baby bonding benefits started without any gap. Totally worth it instead of wasting days trying to call!

•Oh my gosh, thank you! I'm going to check this out right now. I've been trying to call for hours with no luck. Did you have to explain anything special to the rep about the transition, or did they know exactly what to do?

UGH, the EDD system is SUCH a mess!! I had this EXACT problem in January. My disability ended and I was supposed to transition to PFL but NOTHING showed up online. I called for THREE DAYS straight and got disconnected EVERY TIME!!! The EDD doesn't care that we have NEWBORNS and can't sit on the phone all day!!! I ended up with a 2-week gap between benefits because I couldn't get through in time. RIDICULOUS!!!!

•That's unfortunately common, but there's actually a backdating option if you had a gap. You can request PFL benefits be backdated to the day after your disability ended if the delay was due to EDD system issues. It might be worth trying to contact them about this - you could still get those two weeks paid retroactively.

The same thing happened to me. The online system never showed me a link to file for PFL after my disability. But I think it depends on how your doctor filled out your disability form. My doctor accidentally put that I could return to work part-time so the system got confused. Did your doctor put any restrictions on your return to work form? That might be causing the issue.

•I'm not sure what my doctor put exactly. The online system just shows my RTW date as 4/29 with no other details. Is there any way to check what restrictions might be listed?

Update - I used Claimyr this morning and got through to EDD in about 15 minutes! The rep told me the online transition prompt wasn't appearing because of a "flag" on my disability claim that was preventing the PFL option from showing up. She removed the flag, processed my PFL application over the phone, and confirmed my benefits will start immediately after my disability ends with no gap. Those 6 days will be covered! Such a relief to have this sorted out quickly. For anyone facing the same issue, definitely worth getting through to a real person.

•Great update! This is exactly why it's so important to be proactive with EDD. Their system has these little glitches that can cause big problems if not addressed. Glad you got it sorted out quickly!

•Thank you SO much for the update! I'm going to try this right now. It sounds like my situation might be similar with some kind of flag preventing the transition. I'll report back with how it goes!
