EDD payment gap between extended SDI and PFL baby bonding - will I get paid?

I'm freaking out about my finances right now! My original SDI pregnancy disability return to work date was June 14, 2025, but my doctor just extended it to June 29 due to complications from my C-section. I haven't received ANY payment since May 30th (it's now June 12). There's this weird gap and I don't know if I'm supposed to get another SDI payment before my baby bonding PFL kicks in? Or am I just stuck without income for almost 2 weeks?? My rent is due and I can't get through to anyone at EDD on the phone. Has anyone dealt with this payment gap between extended disability and starting PFL?

You should definitely receive payment for the extension period. When your doctor extended your SDI claim, did you complete a supplemental form? The doctor needs to submit a DE2501 extension certification to EDD. Once that's processed, EDD will pay you for those additional days before your PFL baby bonding starts. There shouldn't be a gap in payments - the systems are connected.

My doctor said she submitted something electronically on June 3rd. Do I need to file anything additional myself? The online portal just says my claim is active but doesn't show any pending payments.

The doctor's extension creates a HUGE lag in the system. I had my disability extended twice and both times there was a 2-3 week delay in payments. EDD is terrible with these transitions! You'll eventually get paid retroactively but it's SO STRESSFUL when you have bills due RIGHT NOW. I spent HOURS trying to reach someone at EDD and kept getting disconnected or couldn't get through the phone tree.

Ugh that's exactly what I'm worried about! I can't wait 2-3 weeks for this payment. Did you eventually get it all sorted out? Did you have to keep calling them?

Yes, I finally got it sorted but only after I reached a human at EDD who could actually see what was happening in my account. The online system is useless for these transition situations. The agent told me extensions often get stuck in a review queue and need manual approval.

I was stuck in the same situation last month and finally got through to EDD using Claimyr. It's a service that connects you with an EDD agent without waiting on hold for hours. I was desperate after trying for days with no luck. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Once I got through to an actual agent, they found that my extension form was sitting in a queue waiting to be processed. The agent pushed it through and I got my payment within 3 days. Worth every penny not to stress about missing rent.

Thank you! I'll check this out right now. I've been trying to call for days without getting through.

When I had my baby last year I had to file the PFL claim separately even though my doctor extended my disability. The two systems don't talk to each other very well. My cousin works at a doctor's office and says you should always file your PFL claim about a week before your disability ends to avoid gaps. Have you filed your PFL claim yet?

No I haven't! I thought I was supposed to wait until the disability ends. Should I file the PFL claim now even though I'm still technically on disability?

Yes, you can file your PFL claim before your disability ends. In fact, EDD recommends filing your baby bonding claim up to 2 weeks before your disability ends to ensure a smooth transition. Log into your SDI Online account and select "New Claim" then "Paid Family Leave" to get started with the DE2508 form.

The extension process has a known issue in the EDD system. Here's what happens: when your doctor submits the extension electronically, it sometimes gets flagged for manual review instead of processing automatically. This causes the payment delay you're experiencing. You need to do two things: 1. File your PFL claim immediately (you can have overlapping claims - the system sorts it out) 2. Contact EDD directly about the extension processing delay The extension payment should cover from May 30 to June 29, and your PFL should start immediately after (June 30). But yes, you may experience a temporary gap in actual payment receipt due to processing delays.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I'm going to file my PFL claim right now. I've been trying to call EDD but can't get through no matter what time of day I try.

Update: I used Claimyr this morning and got connected to an EDD agent in about 10 minutes! The agent confirmed my doctor's extension was received but stuck in processing. She manually approved it and said I should see the payment in 24-48 hours. She also helped me file my PFL claim for baby bonding so there won't be a gap when the disability ends. Thank you everyone for your help!

That's great news! Glad you got it sorted so quickly. The payment system is so frustrating but at least there are ways to get through to actual humans who can help.

That wasn't actually me posting that update, but I'm going to try Claimyr right now! Seems like it worked for someone else with the same issue.
