EDD SDI ending 8/8 - Can I get paid before applying for PFL?
I'm currently receiving SDI benefits for a medical condition and my approved disability period ends on August 8th. My last payment covered July 15-29, so there's still about a week left before my return-to-work date. Will EDD automatically send another payment for the remaining days (July 30-August 8)? Or do I have to wait until my disability officially ends on 8/8 before I can apply for Paid Family Leave? I'm planning to take bonding time with my newborn right after my disability ends, but I'm confused about the gap between my last payment and when I'm supposed to return to work. Does anyone know if there will be a final SDI payment or if I should just wait until 8/8 to file for PFL?

You'll get one more SDI payment that covers 7/30-8/8. EDD pays disability in two-week increments when possible, but the final payment will just cover those remaining days. You don't need to do anything special - it should process automatically as long as your doctor certified you through 8/8. As for PFL, you technically CAN apply before your SDI ends, but I recommend waiting until 8/8 or even a day after just to avoid any system confusion. The PFL application will ask for your last day of work, which would be 8/8 in your case.

•Thank you! That's a relief. So I should see another (smaller) payment for those last 10 days. Do you know approximately when that payment might come through? I'm trying to budget for the transition period.

Congrats on the baby! I just went thru this in March. They WILL pay you for those last days but sometimes there's a gap between payments if it's less than 2 weeks. Make sure u apply for PFL ASAP after ur SDI ends!!! I waited 3 days and regretted it bc it took forever to process.

•Thank you! And thanks for the tip about applying for PFL right away. I'll definitely do that. Did you apply online or by phone? I've heard the online system can be confusing for transitioning from SDI to PFL.

The system is stupid sometimes. YES you'll get paid for those last days BUT I've seen EDD mess up the dates when it's a partial period. Double check your claim status online a few days after 7/29 passes. If you don't see any pending payments by 8/1 or 8/2, CALL THEM!!!! Don't wait or you'll be stuck without money. And with a newborn that's the LAST thing you need!!

•I agree with this! My disability ended on Jan 22 and my final payment was for Jan 15-22, but it didn't process automatically. I had to call EDD and was on hold FOR. THREE. HOURS. Finally got a rep who fixed it in literally 2 minutes. The system sometimes needs a human nudge when it's not a full 2-week period.

had the same issue last year. Edd paid me until my return to work date without me doing anything. But wait about 3 days after your last payment before applying for pfl because the system gets confused if you apply while still on sdi.

•Did your final payment come through on the normal schedule? I'm just wondering if I should expect it around the same time I've been getting my regular payments.

The way SDI works is you'll get paid through your last certified day (8/8). Since EDD typically processes payments in 2-week increments, your final payment will just cover those remaining days. For PFL, while you can submit your claim up to 41 days BEFORE your PFL start date, I strongly recommend waiting until your SDI claim fully processes and shows as completed in the system. This prevents claim conflicts that can delay your PFL benefits. Important: Make sure your SDI claim status shows "Returned to Work" after 8/8 before filing for PFL. If you have trouble reaching an EDD rep to check on your claim status, I've used Claimyr (claimyr.com) before and they got me connected to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes - saved me from days of redial hell. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'll wait until my SDI officially ends before applying for PFL. That service sounds useful - I might need it if I run into problems with the transition. I definitely don't want any delays with the PFL.

Im so confused about all this benefit stuff lol. I thought unemployment and disability were the same thing? Why do u need PFL if ur already getting disability??

•They're actually different programs! SDI (State Disability Insurance) is for when YOU can't work due to a medical condition or pregnancy. PFL (Paid Family Leave) is for bonding with a new child or caring for a family member. Unemployment is something else entirely - that's for when you lose your job but are able to work. This person is transitioning from disability (possibly pregnancy-related) to bonding time with their newborn.

•Ohhh that makes sense. So thats why the payments are different too? My friend got more on disability than pfl i think

I just went through EXACTLY this in June! My disability ended 6/12 and my last payment covered through 5/29. I got a smaller payment for 5/30-6/12 automatically about a week after my previous payment. Then I applied for PFL on 6/13 and the transition was pretty smooth. Just make sure all your paperwork is in order for the PFL application because they're super strict about the documentation for bonding claims! They want birth certificate, proof of relationship, etc.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I'm glad to hear your transition went smoothly. I already have all the birth documentation ready for my PFL claim, so hopefully mine will go smoothly too!

One more thing I forgot - if u had state disability insurance taken out of ur paychecks u shud be eligible for both! Some ppl think if u get SDI u cant get PFL but there seperate benefits and u can get both as long as u qualify!

•Yes, I've had SDI deductions from my paychecks so I should be eligible for both. I'm planning to take the full 8 weeks of PFL for bonding. Really appreciate all the advice!

Just wanted to add my experience - I had a similar situation last year where my SDI ended mid-month. The final payment did come through automatically, but it took about 3-4 days longer than my usual payment schedule. Don't panic if it doesn't show up exactly when you expect it! Also, when you do apply for PFL, make sure to select "bonding" as your reason and not "caring for family member" - I made that mistake initially and had to resubmit. The bonding claim process is much more straightforward once you have all your documents ready. Good luck with your new baby!

As someone new to this whole process, I'm really grateful for all the detailed responses here! I'm in a similar situation - my SDI is ending soon and I'm planning to transition to PFL for bonding time. One question I have is about the timing of when to submit the PFL application. I've seen some people say to wait until SDI officially ends, while others mention you can apply up to 41 days before. For someone who wants to avoid any gaps in benefits, what's the safest approach? Also, should I be worried about any potential overlap issues if I apply too early? I definitely don't want to mess up either claim!

•Welcome to the group! I'm new to this too, but from everything I've read here, it seems like the safest approach is to wait until your SDI officially ends and shows "Returned to Work" status before applying for PFL. Even though you CAN apply up to 41 days early, multiple people have mentioned system confusion and delays when there's overlap. A few days gap is better than weeks of processing delays! I'd rather be safe and wait until my SDI claim is completely closed out. The peace of mind seems worth it, especially with a newborn to worry about.

As someone who just went through this exact transition in May, I can confirm you'll definitely get that final SDI payment for July 30-August 8! Mine came through about 5 days after my regular payment date, so don't worry if it's slightly delayed. For the PFL application, I'd echo what others have said about waiting until August 9th or 10th to apply. I made the mistake of applying while my SDI was still technically active and it created a whole mess that took 3 weeks to sort out. EDD's system really doesn't like overlapping claims. Also, pro tip: when you do apply for PFL, have your baby's birth certificate already uploaded as a PDF because the document upload can be finicky. Congratulations on your little one and best of luck with the transition!

•Thank you for sharing your experience! That's really reassuring to know the final payment will come through. I appreciate the tip about waiting until August 9th or 10th - it sounds like avoiding any overlap is definitely the way to go. The document upload tip is super helpful too. I'll make sure to have the birth certificate ready as a PDF beforehand. It's so nice to hear from people who have actually been through this process recently!

Just wanted to share my recent experience since I went through this exact transition in March! My SDI ended on a mid-month date too (March 15th) and I was worried about that final partial payment. It did come through automatically about 4-5 days after my regular payment date, so don't stress if it's not exactly on schedule. For the PFL application, I cannot stress this enough - WAIT until your SDI claim shows "Returned to Work" status before applying! I got impatient and applied 2 days early, thinking it would be fine since my disability period was basically over. Big mistake! It flagged both claims and I had to spend hours on the phone getting it sorted out. The EDD rep told me this happens all the time and their system really doesn't handle overlapping claims well. My advice: Check your SDI status online on August 9th, and once it shows you've returned to work, then submit your PFL application. A day or two gap is SO much better than weeks of delays. Also make sure you select "bonding with new child" and not "caring for family member" when you apply - they're processed differently. Wishing you a smooth transition and congratulations on your new baby!
