When will I get PFL baby bonding email after maternity leave ends today?
My pregnancy disability leave (SDI) officially ends today and I'm supposed to transition to baby bonding PFL. My doctor completed all the paperwork last week, but I haven't received any email from EDD about starting the PFL application process. I'm getting really nervous because I can't afford any gap in payments between benefits. Does anyone know how quickly the PFL email typically arrives after SDI ends? I thought it would be automatic? Do I need to do something on my end to trigger it? This is my first baby and I'm completely lost with this whole process.

My sdi ended on a Friday and I got the email Monday for pfl. Don't worry yet.

•Thanks! That's slightly reassuring. I'll try to wait patiently until Monday then.

The transition from pregnancy disability to baby bonding isn't quite automatic - you should receive an email within 1-3 business days after your SDI claim ends. The email contains a link to complete your PFL application. If you don't get it by Wednesday, you should definitely contact EDD directly. Make sure you're checking the email you used for your SDI application and check your spam folder too. When you do get the email, complete it right away since delays in filing can cause gaps in payment.

•Thank you so much for the detailed info! I've been checking my inbox obsessively but didn't think to look in spam. I'll start checking there too. Really hoping it comes through soon.

DONT PANIC YET but dont wait too long either!! My transition from SDI to PFL was a MESS last year. I never got the email and waited 2 weeks thinking it would come. BIG MISTAKE!!! I had to call EDD like 46 times before getting through and then they told me something was wrong with my account settings. By then I had a 3 week gap in payments and almost couldn't pay rent!!! The system is broken!!!!

•Oh no, this is exactly what I'm afraid of! I definitely can't afford to wait 2 weeks with no income. I'll give it until Wednesday like the other person suggested, then start calling.

•This happened to me too! I ended up waiting 4 weeks for my baby bonding because I couldn't get through to anyone at EDD. My cousin told me about this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD agent in like 15 minutes instead of calling for days. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. Saved me so much stress with a newborn at home.

The transition from pregnancy disability to Paid Family Leave should be relatively seamless, but there are technical reasons for the slight delay. EDD needs to officially close your SDI claim in their system before generating the PFL application email. This typically takes 1-3 business days. If you don't receive the email by the fourth business day: 1. Check all email folders including spam/junk 2. Verify your email address is correct in your SDI Online account 3. Call EDD at 1-877-238-4373 (though be prepared for long wait times) One important thing to know: even if there's a delay in getting your PFL application started, you can still receive benefits retroactively to the day after your SDI ended. Just make sure you complete the application as soon as you receive it. For 2025, you're eligible for 8 weeks of PFL baby bonding, which can be taken all at once or split into smaller periods throughout the first year of your child's life.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I didn't realize they could pay retroactively, that makes me feel much better. I'll definitely start calling on day 4 if I don't see the email. I appreciate everyone's advice!

When my SDI ended in February, I actually got the PFL email BEFORE my disability ended, like 2 days early. But my coworker didn't get hers until 5 days after. I think it really depends on your case worker and how backed up the system is. The most annoying thing was once I got the email and filed for PFL, it still took 10 days to get my first payment! They really don't make it easy for new parents do they?

•5 days?? I dind't get mine for 2 weeks and had to call them everyday. The system is totally random.

Just to add a bit more information - the process should work like this: 1. Your pregnancy disability claim (SDI) ends on your doctor-certified date 2. EDD closes out that claim in their system (1-3 business days) 3. The system automatically generates a PFL application email 4. You complete the PFL application for baby bonding 5. EDD processes your PFL claim (typically 5-7 business days) 6. Your first PFL payment is issued For 2025, the weekly benefit amount for your PFL should be the same as what you received for SDI (60-70% of your wages, depending on your income level). And as I mentioned, payments can be retroactive to avoid gaps in coverage. If by some chance you don't receive the email at all, you can also initiate a PFL claim by calling EDD directly or using their online portal under the "New Claim" option. But it's generally easier to use the email link when it arrives.

•This is accurate. Just one correction - the benefit amount for both SDI and PFL in 2025 is actually 55-70% of your wages, not 60-70%. They lowered the minimum percentage last year. The maximum weekly benefit is $1,620 now.

•Thanks for this detailed breakdown! Really helps to understand the full process. If I don't get the email by Thursday, I think I'll try the online portal route you mentioned rather than spending hours on the phone.
