How long to transition from SDI to PFL baby bonding? Applied 11/15 but no updates
I just finished my pregnancy disability period and my SDI benefits ended on November 14th. I immediately applied for PFL baby bonding on the 15th using the link EDD sent to my inbox. I got that automatic text saying 'we received your application and will reach out if we have questions' but it's been complete radio silence since then. Starting to worry since my bills aren't going to wait around! How long does it typically take to see movement on your PFL claim after transitioning from SDI? Is there a specific wait time I should expect? This is my first baby so I'm totally new to navigating this system and getting a bit anxious with no income coming in. I tried checking my claim status online but it just shows 'pending' with no other details.

In my experience when I transitioned from SDI to PFL in early 2025, it took about 10 business days to see movement on my claim. The system is supposed to recognize it as a seamless transition since they already have all your wage information from the SDI claim. Have you tried checking if there are any outstanding forms or requests in your EDD account? Sometimes they need additional verification but don't clearly notify you.

•Thanks for responding! I've checked my EDD account multiple times and don't see any outstanding forms or requests. Nothing in my inbox either. I'm getting really nervous since I was counting on that PFL money to cover December bills. Do you think I should just keep waiting or is there something else I should be doing?

mine took almost 3 weeks!!! the EDD website said 5-7 days but that was a total lie. so frustrating espically with a newborn and no $$$ coming in. hang in there

•3 weeks?! Omg I can't wait that long. Did you do anything to speed up the process or just had to wait it out?

There's actually no standard wait time for transitions from SDI to PFL - I've seen it take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. The problem is that even though it SHOULD be a seamless transition (as they already have your wage information), these claims often get placed in manual review queues. A few things to check: 1. Make sure you used the transition link they sent and not a new application 2. Verify your baby's birth certificate info matches exactly what you provided on your SDI claim 3. Check that your doctor properly closed out your pregnancy disability claim If you've done all that, the next step is calling EDD directly. Unfortunately, their phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through on.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I definitely used the transition link they provided, and I think all my documentation is consistent. My OB confirmed that they submitted the final disability certification. I've tried calling EDD three times but gave up after being on hold for 45+ minutes each time. This is so frustrating!

I struggled with the EXACT same situation last month! After waiting 2 weeks with no updates, I finally got through to EDD using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have this service where they basically wait on hold for you and call you when an agent picks up. Totally worth it for me since I was trying to take care of my newborn and couldn't sit on hold for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The EDD agent told me my claim needed a manual review because my SDI claim had been adjusted at some point (I had a short extension due to c-section recovery). Once I talked to someone, they processed my PFL claim that same day.

•is this service legit?? seems kinda sketchy to me but i'm desperate to reach someone at edd too

•It worked for me! I was skeptical too but they just connect you with EDD, they don't access your account or anything. You still talk directly to the EDD agent yourself.

KEEP CALLING!!! The EDD is a complete disaster and unless you harass them your claim will sit in the queue forever!!! I had to call 27 TIMES to get someone on the phone for my PFL claim in January. The system is designed to make you give up. DON'T GIVE UP!!!

•27 times?! That's insane. I don't have the energy for that with a newborn. I'm seriously considering that call service the other person mentioned just to get this resolved.

When I transitioned from SDI to PFL for baby bonding in March, I noticed something odd - the EDD system actually had created TWO PFL claims for me. One was from the transition link they sent, and another was auto-generated by their system. This caused a delay because both claims were essentially blocking each other. When you log into your EDD account, check if there are multiple claim numbers listed. If you see anything unusual like that, you definitely need to speak with a representative to have them sort it out. Also, check your mail carefully. Sometimes they send letters requesting additional information even when the online portal shows nothing pending. The system doesn't always sync correctly.

•That's interesting - I'll double check for multiple claims. I've been checking my mail obsessively but nothing from EDD so far. The whole system seems so inefficient!

•Yes, I uploaded a copy of the birth certificate with my application. I'm starting to wonder if maybe something went wrong with the upload though? The file was kind of large.

Quick update on timing: I just checked with my sister who transitioned from SDI to PFL in September 2025, and her wait time was 8 business days. So there's definitely a lot of variation. If you're approaching the 10 business day mark, I'd definitely recommend making contact with EDD directly to check status.

•I'm at 9 business days now, so I guess I'm right at that threshold. I'll try calling again tomorrow morning when their lines first open. Thanks for the reference point!

Just to clarify a technical detail - the transition from SDI to PFL for baby bonding technically involves closing one claim type (pregnancy disability) and opening a completely new claim type (paid family leave), even though they're both handled by EDD. This is why there can sometimes be a gap - they're not truly continuous in the system despite being continuous benefits for the claimant. Also, make sure on your online account you're looking under the PFL section, not the disability section. They show up in different places in the portal, which trips up a lot of people.

•Thank you for explaining that! I didn't realize they were completely separate claims in their system. And yes, I've been checking the PFL section specifically - it just shows 'pending' with the date I applied (11/15).

Good news - I just checked the EDD processing times report they released yesterday, and the current processing time for PFL transitions is 12-14 business days (as of December 2025). That's longer than their target of 7 days, but at least gives you a realistic timeframe. If you're at 9 business days now, you might just need to wait a bit longer.

•Thanks for checking that report! That actually makes me feel a bit better knowing there's an official delay rather than something wrong with my specific claim. I'll try to be patient for a few more days, though it's still frustrating with bills coming due.

UPDATE: I just got approved! Literally 10 minutes ago I received the text that my claim was approved and they'll be sending payment within 24-48 hours. It took exactly 10 business days from when I submitted the application. Sending good vibes that yours follows soon!

I'm in almost the exact same situation! Applied for PFL baby bonding on 11/20 after my SDI ended and it's been crickets ever since. Reading through all these responses is both reassuring and terrifying - sounds like anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks is normal?? That's such a huge range! I've been checking my account obsessively and it just says "pending" with no other info. Haven't received any mail from EDD either. This is also my first baby and I had no idea the transition wouldn't be automatic. Really wish they were more transparent about expected timelines instead of leaving us all in the dark while we're trying to figure out new parent life AND finances. @Ev Luca - crossing my fingers we both hear something soon! The financial stress on top of everything else is just brutal.
