PFL approval timeline after filing? No communication for a week!
Just submitted my baby bonding PFL claim last Tuesday after transitioning from SDI and now I'm anxiously checking my account multiple times daily. I haven't received ANY communication - no texts, calls, or UI Online messages. My SDI ended 2/15/2025 and I filed PFL on 2/18. Will they notify me when they approve it? Or do I need to keep checking the website? My SDI payments were coming regularly but now I'm worried about a gap in income while waiting for PFL to kick in. Normal processing time? Anyone else go through this recently? First-time dad here so the whole system is confusing!

From my experience, they don't typically call you. The online system will update your claim status from "pending" to "approved" and then payments start processing. For baby bonding after SDI, the transition is usually faster than brand new claims - mine took about 7-10 days to switch over. I'd give it another week before panicking. Make sure all your documentation was complete when you submitted!

•Thanks! That's reassuring. I uploaded my baby's birth certificate and hospital documentation with the initial claim. Should I be calling them to check on it or just wait it out?

•3 weeks?! Ugh, that's so long. We've got bills due next week that I was counting on this for. Really hoping it's faster.

HAHAHAHA good luck getting ANY communication from EDD!!! I had to call 37 TIMES before getting through to a human being when my PFL was mysteriously "pending" for 5 weeks with NO EXPLANATION. Their system is BROKEN and they don't care at all about parents struggling to pay bills while waiting. You better start calling NOW because the longer you wait, the longer you'll go without money. Don't trust them to just "process" anything in a timely manner.

•This happened to me too! I waited 3 weeks thinking it would just process and then found out they needed additional info but never bothered to tell me. Such a broken system.

I recently helped several clients with PFL baby bonding claims after SDI, and here's what I can tell you: The standard processing time is 7-14 business days for straightforward transitions (SDI to PFL for the same child). However, if there are any discrepancies in your documentation or if you're applying for a different child than your SDI claim was for, it can take 2-3 weeks. EDD rarely calls claimants. They primarily communicate through your UI Online account or by mail. Check your UI Online inbox daily and make sure your mailing address is current. If you don't see an update by day 14 (business days), that's when I'd recommend contacting them. The wait times on their phone lines are notoriously long, so have all your claim information ready when you do call.

•This is super helpful - thank you! It is the same child (my only child) so hopefully that means it'll process on the faster side. I'll keep watching my UI Online account and give it until next Thursday before I try calling.

I filed for PFL baby bonding last year and had the same anxiety! I kept checking my account constantly and nothing was changing. Then I randomly got a deposit in my account one day with zero notification! I would have missed it if I hadn't been obsessively checking my bank account too! EDD is so weird about communications sometimes.

If you're worried and need to reach an EDD agent, try Claimyr. I was in the same boat - waiting and stressing - and couldn't get through on the regular lines. Claimyr connected me to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes after I'd spent days trying on my own. Found out my claim had a small issue they needed to verify. Once fixed, payment came through within 48 hours. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 or go to claimyr.com. Totally worth it for the peace of mind.

•Does this actually work?? I'm skeptical of ANY service claiming to help with EDD, but I'm so desperate at this point I might try ANYTHING to get through to those people.

•It worked for me and a couple other people in my parenting group. It's just a callback service - they basically wait on hold for you then call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

When I had my twins in January, my PFL claim went through in just 4 days after my SDI ended! But then I had a friend who applied in February and hers took 3 full weeks. I think it really depends on their backlog and how busy they are at different times. If your claim is straightforward and your documentation is complete, you should be fine. Just keep checking the portal! By the way, if you're applying for baby bonding, remember that both parents can take it now! My husband is planning to take his portion in June when I go back to work.

•4 days would be amazing! My wife already used her PFL time immediately after birth while I kept working. Now I'm taking over so she can return to her job. Hoping it gets approved soon.

Quick update check: Has your claim status changed at all? It's been about a week since your original post, so you should be starting to see movement if everything was filed correctly.

•Yes! Actually just got approved yesterday - took exactly 9 business days. First payment is already processing. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance!
