EDD PFL processing timeline - 14 days with no updates, should I call?

I submitted my baby bonding PFL claim online 2 weeks ago (exactly 14 days) after finishing my pregnancy disability leave. My account just shows 'pending review' with no other updates. I expected to get some kind of notification by now? This is my first time applying for PFL and I'm getting nervous about finances since my SDI payments stopped. Should I be calling EDD at this point or is 14 days still within normal processing time? Getting anxious since rent is due next week...

14 days is still within the normal processing window, but getting close to when you might want to follow up. Typically PFL baby bonding claims take 10-14 business days (so not counting weekends) when everything is submitted correctly and there are no issues. If you transferred directly from pregnancy disability, it can sometimes take a little longer for them to confirm the pregnancy disability claim was properly closed before starting the PFL payments. Did you receive any confirmation email when you initially submitted?

Thanks for the info! Yes, I did get a confirmation email when I submitted, but nothing since then. The transition from SDI to PFL was what I was worried about - maybe that's causing the delay? I'll give it until next Monday (that would be 19 days total) before panicking.

hang in there! mine took 17 days to process last year and then the money just showed up in my account without any notifications lol. EDD is weird like that

That's reassuring! I'll keep checking my account. Did you have to do anything special to get it processed?

My sister just went through this last month! Her PFL took 21 days to process because there was some confusion about her last day worked on her disability claim vs when her baby bonding was supposed to start. She had to call like 10 times before finally getting through. The whole system is a mess honestly.

I had the EXACT same experience!!! They kept telling me there was a "gap" between my pregancy disability and baby bonding even though I submitted EXACTLY what the doctor told me to! Ended up waiting 5 WEEKS for payment and had to borrow money from my parents. The EDD system is BROKEN!!!

While 14 days is still within normal processing time, it's approaching the point where you might want to contact EDD for confirmation. When transitioning from pregnancy disability to baby bonding PFL, make sure you've submitted form DE2501FP correctly showing your transition date. Common delays happen when there's date misalignment between the end of SDI and start of PFL. If your SDI payments have stopped but PFL hasn't started, this creates a concerning financial gap. I recommend calling EDD now rather than waiting further - it's better to be proactive given your upcoming rent payment. Call early in the morning (8:00-8:30am) for shortest wait times.

Thank you for the detailed advice. I did submit the DE2501FP and made sure the dates aligned perfectly with when my pregnancy disability ended. I'll try calling tomorrow morning as you suggested. Fingers crossed I can get through!

I was stuck in this exact situation back in January. After two weeks of waiting and tons of failed call attempts (constant busy signals, disconnects after 2+ hour waits), I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD agent in about 25 minutes. The rep confirmed my claim was actually missing a document I had no idea was required! Fixed it right there over the phone and got paid 3 days later. Check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 or visit claimyr.com - seriously saved my sanity and rent payment!

I've never heard of this service before. Was it easy to use? I'm desperate at this point and willing to try anything that might help me actually talk to a real person at EDD.

Super easy - you just put in your number and they call you when they've got an EDD agent on the line. Saved me from hours of redial attempts. The agent I spoke with was actually really helpful once I finally got through to someone.

dont even wait call right now!!! my claim took 6 WEEKS because they "lost" my paperwork and nobody told me!!! every day you wait is another day without money

That's horrible! Did they backpay you for all that time at least?

0 coins

yes they did backpay everything but that doesnt help when your bills are due NOW and your account is at zero!!

One thing that might help speed things up - log into your EDD account and check if there are any "Tasks" or "Messages" showing in your inbox. Sometimes they need additional information but the notification email goes to spam. The online portal will show if they're waiting on something from you.

Just checked and there are no tasks or messages showing up. My inbox is completely empty. I think I need to call them directly as others have suggested.

Honestly I got so confused between SDI and PFL when I was applying. Isn't SDI for when you're still pregnant and PFL is for after the baby? Or wait, is SDI the 6-8 weeks after birth? I can never keep these straight even though I've done this twice now lol.

You're partially right, but let me clarify: SDI (State Disability Insurance) covers pregnancy disability, which includes the time before birth when you can't work due to pregnancy (typically 4 weeks before due date) AND the recovery period after birth (typically 6 weeks for vaginal delivery or 8 weeks for C-section). PFL (Paid Family Leave) is the baby bonding portion that can be used after your recovery period ends. They're separate benefits but both administered through EDD, which is why the transition can be confusing and sometimes causes delays.

Good idea - just checked but nothing there yet. Definitely still waiting on the payment to process.

UPDATE: I called EDD this morning (was on hold for over an hour) and finally got through! The rep said my claim is actually approved but there was a small system delay in updating my online account. She said payment should be issued within 24-48 hours! So relieved. Thanks everyone for your advice and encouragement to call instead of continuing to wait.

That's great news! This is exactly why it's good to follow up. Sometimes their system has delays in showing the actual status. Glad you'll be getting your payment soon!

see!! this is why you ALWAYS have to call them!!!

Congratulations on getting through and getting it resolved! Your experience is a perfect example of why persistence pays off with EDD. For anyone else reading this thread who might be in a similar situation - Omar's timeline and approach is spot on. 14 days is getting close to when you should definitely call, especially if you're facing financial pressure. The key takeaways: 1) Don't wait too long if money is tight, 2) Call early morning for better chances, 3) Sometimes the system shows "pending" even when it's actually approved. Thanks for updating us with the resolution - it really helps other parents going through the same stress!

This is such helpful advice! I'm actually in a very similar situation right now - submitted my PFL claim 12 days ago and getting anxious about the lack of updates. Omar's success story gives me hope that calling might actually resolve things quickly. I was hesitant to call because I kept reading about the long wait times, but if it means getting answers and potentially getting my payment processed faster, it's definitely worth it. Thanks for sharing the key takeaways - especially the tip about calling early morning!
