This is random but has anyone else had crazy issues trying to reach EDD on the phone about maternity claims? I just had baby #2 and my disability claim has been pending for WEEKS. I keep calling the number on their website but it's always "we're experiencing high call volume" and disconnects me! HOW am I supposed to fix my claim issues if I can't even talk to a real person?! So frustrating.
I had the exact same problem! I finally got through by using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). It basically calls EDD for you and connects you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of redial hell when my baby bonding claim was stuck pending. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 - was absolutely worth it for me since I got my issue resolved in one call after weeks of trying on my own.
back to original question - my sister works for a district in northern cali and said some districts have opted out of SDI completely so check your district policy too. if they opted out, you might be eligible for different benefits thru the district instead of EDD.
That's a good point! Some public employers opt out of SDI and offer their own disability plans. If that's the case for your district, you'd go through their internal process rather than EDD. The OP mentioned seeing SDI deductions on her paystub though, so it sounds like her district participates in the state program.
my pfl claim took almost 3 weeks to process last month and i was freaking out the whole time lol. hang in there!
To answer your follow-up question - yes, EDD will notify you when your PFL claim is approved. You'll get an email notification (if you opted for electronic communications) and a letter in the mail. You can also check your claim status online, but the system isn't always updated in real-time. PFL claims are taking anywhere from 7-21 days to process right now. They're supposed to be processed within 14 days, but there's often a backlog, especially at the beginning of the year.
Did your former employer show up to the hearing with an attorney? Or just an HR rep? That makes a big difference too.
It was just their HR director - no attorney. She actually acknowledged during the hearing that they were aware of my situation and that I had tried to find alternatives before quitting. So that felt positive to me.
the waiting is THE WORST!!!! hang in there. sending positive vibes ur way!!!!
Thank you! 💜 The waiting while bills pile up is definitely the hardest part. Trying to stay positive!
One other thing nobody mentioned - if he goes back on UI after PFL, they're going to ask him WHY he isn't working. If he says "seasonal layoff" they might deny him because they'll say "but you were just on leave, not laid off." I had to get my boss to write a letter confirming I was still seasonally laid off even though I took baby bonding leave in the middle. SUCH A HEADACHE! The whole system is designed to deny you benefits!!!!
This is partially correct. He should be clear that he was on a seasonal layoff, then took PFL for baby bonding during that period, and is now returning to his seasonal layoff status. His employer should indicate on the required forms that this was a planned seasonal layoff that continued before and after his PFL period. It's actually a common situation that EDD representatives are familiar with for construction and other seasonal industries.
Just wanted to add. My hubby took the PFL for our baby back in 2023 and said it was the best decision ever. Hes also seasonal landscaper and deals with UI every year. Just do the PFL its way better pay then UI anyway lol
ya PFL pays wayyy more!! its like 60 or 70% of ur salary!!!!! UI has that stupid max benefit of like $450 a week but PFL goes based on what u actually make!!!

OMG girl dont even get me started about EDD!!! So my twins are 7mo now and I just finally got my full payments sorted last week!!! I had the EXACT same prblm where I got one payment then nothing... What finally worked was having my OB write a letter confirming my delivery date and inability to work during recovery. Faxed that + a letter explaining the financial hardshp to the appeals fax (not the regular one). Got call back in 3 days. Apparently theres some stupid glitch in there system for 2025 where if your disability claim start date is within 5 days of a calendar quarter ending, it puts subsequent payments on manual review???????? Like WHO DESIGNED THIS GARBAGE SYSTEM???

•Twins!!! Omg I can't imagine doing this with two babies. You're superwoman! That's an interesting point about the calendar quarter - my disability claim DID start right at the end of December 2024, so maybe that's why I'm having issues? Do you happen to still have that appeals fax number? I'll ask my doctor for a letter tomorrow.

Just wanted to follow up - I think there's some confusion in the comments about terminology that might be making your search for help harder. For pregnancy-related benefits, you first get Pregnancy Disability Leave (SDI) for 4 weeks before birth and 6-8 weeks after birth depending on delivery type. Then you transition to Paid Family Leave (PFL) for baby bonding (8 weeks). They're both administered by EDD but processed by different departments with different phone numbers. Since you mentioned you've only received one SDI payment so far, you need to speak with the Disability Insurance office first to fix those payments before dealing with PFL. The number for DI is 1-800-480-3287. Once your SDI is sorted out, then you can address the PFL portion.

•Thank you for clarifying! I've been using SDI and DI interchangeably and probably causing confusion. You're right that I need to get the disability part fixed first. My doctor authorized 6 weeks post-delivery (vaginal delivery) which should have ended in early December. Then I was supposed to transition to PFL for baby bonding starting mid-December. But I've only received that one disability payment in January, nothing before or after 😩
