Why is everyone acting like this is normal?? It's NOT normal or acceptable for the state to just stop sending money to new parents! When I had my baby in 2023, I didn't have any gap between disability and baby bonding. Something is wrong with your claim specifically. Did you file online or using paper forms? The paper forms take WAY longer.
Actually, seamless transitions are the exception, not the rule. The majority of claimants experience a 1-3 week gap between PDL and PFL. You were one of the lucky ones! The system processing time varies significantly based on claim volume, staffing levels, and whether any verification is needed. Online filing is faster, but even then, gaps are common during the transition.
UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD today! The rep confirmed there was nothing wrong with my application, but said there's usually a 2-3 week processing period when transitioning from PDL to PFL Baby Bonding. She said my payment should be issued within the next 5 business days. For anyone else in this situation - it seems like waiting is normal (though super stressful). Thanks everyone for your advice and support!
That's great news! Glad you got confirmation. For future reference (or for others reading this), if you need to transition from PDL to PFL again for another child, file the PFL claim about 2 weeks before your PDL ends. It won't start paying until after PDL ends, but having it pre-processed in their system can reduce the gap significantly.
Update - I used Claimyr this morning and got through to EDD in about 15 minutes! The rep told me the online transition prompt wasn't appearing because of a "flag" on my disability claim that was preventing the PFL option from showing up. She removed the flag, processed my PFL application over the phone, and confirmed my benefits will start immediately after my disability ends with no gap. Those 6 days will be covered! Such a relief to have this sorted out quickly. For anyone facing the same issue, definitely worth getting through to a real person.
Great update! This is exactly why it's so important to be proactive with EDD. Their system has these little glitches that can cause big problems if not addressed. Glad you got it sorted out quickly!
wait i'm confused... i thought you could only get PFL if you were the one who gave birth? can both parents really get it at the same time? my husband and i are expecting in july and we didn't know we could both apply...
There are two different programs. Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) or State Disability Insurance (SDI) is what covers the person who gives birth - typically 4 weeks before delivery and 6-8 weeks after. Then there's Paid Family Leave (PFL) for baby bonding, which BOTH parents can take - up to 8 weeks each. So yes, both you and your husband can receive benefits, but the birthing parent typically transitions from SDI to PFL after recovery.
Quick update for anyone interested: We finally got through to EDD this morning! Turns out there was a "system flag" on both our accounts because we have the same address and birth date for the twins. The representative removed the flag and said both claims should be processed within 5-7 business days. So relieved! For anyone else stuck in pending: definitely mention "escalation" when you call (thanks @HR-Person!), and yes, twin births with both parents applying does seem to cause problems in their system.
Excellent news! This is exactly the issue I suspected. So glad you were able to get it resolved. Make sure to check your accounts daily, and if you don't see movement within 7 days, call back and reference the previous call.
Yes! Thank you for checking back. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and got through to EDD yesterday. Turns out there was a small discrepancy between when my doctor said my disability ended and when I started my PFL claim (off by one day). The representative fixed it while I was on the phone, and my online account updated this morning showing the claim is now approved! They said I should see payment within 24-48 hours. What a relief!

After you get this resolved, make sure your husband files his final certification correctly. Since you mentioned he's going back to work next week, he'll need to report his return-to-work date on his final certification. If he doesn't do this accurately, it could trigger an overpayment notice months later. The specific question is on the certification form where it asks if there was any change in your eligibility - returning to work counts as a change, and he'll need to provide the exact date.

•Oh thank you for this! I hadn't even thought about the return to work certification process. Will definitely make sure he reports the correct date to avoid any overpayment issues later.

Just wanted to update everyone - we finally got through to EDD using Claimyr this morning! The rep confirmed they received all our identity verification documents and said the system shows they were "pending review." She put a note on the account about his leave ending next week and said she'd flag it as time-sensitive. Hopefully this helps speed things up! Will update again when/if we receive payment.

•That's excellent news! The time-sensitive flag can definitely help expedite things. In my experience working with these claims, you should see movement within 2-3 business days once that priority flag is applied to the account. Definitely update us when you hear more!
