EDD PFL postpartum form confusion - what 'other part' are they asking for?

I submitted my PFL claim for postpartum baby bonding last week, including the doctor's certification portion for my recovery. Today I got an automated message saying they need 'the other part' of my application but I have NO IDEA what they're talking about?? The doctor filled out all the medical stuff certifying my delivery date (2/14/25) and my 6-week recovery period. What other form am I supposed to submit? The EDD website is so confusing and I've called 17 times today with no answer. My disability benefits are running out soon and I need the baby bonding PFL to start without a gap. Anyone else deal with this recently?

They're probably talking about the DE2508F form - that's the baby bonding claim form, which is separate from your doctor's medical certification. You would have needed the doctor form for your pregnancy disability claim (SDI), but for the PFL baby bonding, you need to submit the bonding form plus proof of relationship (like the birth certificate). Did you fill out the actual baby bonding claim form or just send the doctor's certification?

OMG thank you!!! I thought the doctor's part WAS the baby bonding form! I didn't realize I needed another separate form for bonding. Where do I even find this DE2508F thing? Is it on the EDD website? I'm freaking out because my SDI ends next Friday!!!

This exact thing happened to me! The "other part" they're talking about is definitely the DE2508F - that's the baby bonding claim form. The doctor filled out medical info was probably on a DE2501 form, which is for disability (your recovery from childbirth). For PFL baby bonding, you submit the DE2508F plus proof you're the parent (birth certificate). Honestly, calling EDD to get clarification is your best bet, but I know it's practically impossible to get through. I spent days trying before I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual EDD agent in under 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. It was worth it to get this sorted out fast instead of stressing while my benefits were about to run out.

those claimyr people are just making $$ off poor moms who are stressed out! why should we have to PAY to talk to EDD?? its RIDICULOUS that we cant get through on our own!! the whole system is designed to make it hard for us to get benefits we DESERVE!!

ya this is confusing af lol. i remember being super confused when i did mine too. pregnancy disability is different from baby bonding pfl. one is for healing from birth the other is for bonding with baby. separate forms for each 🙃

Ikr! I'm due in 3 weeks and trying to figure all this out ahead of time. I read somewhere that we should submit the bonding form before disability ends but not too early?? When did you submit yours?

The "other part" they're referring to is the PFL claim form (DE2508F) for baby bonding. There are two distinct benefit periods and forms: 1. Pregnancy Disability (SDI): Uses form DE2501 with doctor certification for your physical recovery from childbirth (typically 6-8 weeks) 2. Paid Family Leave (PFL): Uses form DE2508F for baby bonding (8 weeks in 2025) You need to complete the DE2508F and provide proof of relationship (birth certificate or hospital record). You can find this form on the EDD website under "Paid Family Leave Forms" or through your SDI Online account under "New Claim". Submit this ASAP as processing can take 1-2 weeks. Ideally, you should submit the DE2508F about 1-2 weeks before your SDI benefits end to ensure continuous payment.

Thank you so much for explaining!! This makes sense now. I just logged into my SDI Online account and found where to submit the DE2508F. I'm going to fill it out right now and upload a copy of the hospital birth certificate. Really appreciate the clear explanation!

When I had my baby last year I remember the whole postpartum process was so frustrating! I kept mixing up which form was which and almost missed out on benefits. My sister had a baby 6 months before me and she kept telling me about these forms but I was so sleep deprived I couldn't keep anything straight lol. Congrats on your new baby though!! The paperwork is annoying but those bonding weeks are precious!

Thank you! Yes, trying to figure out complicated government paperwork with a newborn and barely any sleep is... challenging 😅 I'm excited for the bonding time though once I get this sorted out!

I submitted my baby bonding form (DE2508F) two days after giving birth while still in the hospital because the nurse recommended doing it early. It was approved and ready to go when my disability ended! You should be able to find the form on the EDD website or through your SDI Online account. Good luck!!

EDD makes this INTENTIONALLY CONFUSING!!! They hope you miss deadlines so they don't have to pay. I had the EXACT same issue and almost lost 3 weeks of benefits because of their unclear instructions. They NEVER explain that you need BOTH forms and the transition between disability and PFL is NOT automatic like they claim!!! ALWAYS call and confirm they received EVERYTHING even if the website says it's processed!!

While the process could definitely be clearer, I don't think they're intentionally making it confusing to avoid paying benefits. The EDD website does explain the difference between SDI and PFL, though it's buried in several pages of information. They're actually required by law to process complete applications within a specific timeframe. The bigger issue is their outdated systems and understaffing.

Update: I found the DE2508F form through my SDI Online account and submitted it this morning along with a copy of the birth certificate. Thank you all SO MUCH for your help! I would have been completely lost without your guidance. I'll update again once I hear back from EDD about whether my application is complete now.

Great! Just make sure you certify for benefits weekly once your PFL claim is approved. Many people don't realize they need to continue certifying during baby bonding PFL similar to how you did with disability. The certification questions are slightly different though.
