EDD PFL baby bonding application stuck in limbo after disability ended - no payments for 2 weeks

Help! My pregnancy disability claim ended on June 14th and I submitted my Paid Family Leave baby bonding application on June 16th. It's been over 2 weeks now, and I've heard NOTHING from EDD. My benefits card shows a $0 balance and I'm starting to panic about bills. Do I need to submit a whole new claim? Did I mess something up in the transition process? Anyone know how long this gap between disability and PFL baby bonding is supposed to take? This is my first baby and I'm so confused about this whole process. 😫

This is actually normal, though frustrating! The transition from pregnancy disability to PFL baby bonding typically takes 10-14 business days to process in the system, sometimes longer if there's a backlog. You don't need to open a new claim - your PFL application (DE2501FP form) should connect to your existing disability claim. Did you get any confirmation number when you submitted the baby bonding application?

Thank you for responding! Yes, I got a confirmation number when I submitted online, but nothing since then. Do weekends count in those 10-14 business days? I'm getting nervous because rent is due next week... 😥

3 weeks?! I can't wait that long! Did you have to call them or did it just magically appear one day?

Unfortunately, there is definitely a gap in payments during the transition from pregnancy disability to baby bonding PFL. The system processes these as separate claims even though they're connected. A few things to check: 1. Make sure you used the correct form (DE2501FP for Paid Family Leave) 2. Verify your doctor properly completed their portion if required 3. Check your EDD online account for any flags or messages 4. If your disability claim was paper-based but you applied for PFL online (or vice versa), this can cause additional delays If it's been more than 14 business days, I'd recommend calling EDD directly. The transition shouldn't take longer than that unless there's an issue with your application.

I WENT THROUGH THIS EXACT NIGHTMARE in January! The gap between my disability ending and PFL baby bonding starting was almost 3 WEEKS with zero explanation from EDD!!!! I had to call them EIGHT TIMES before finally getting through to a human who told me there was nothing wrong with my application - they were just "processing" it. The whole system is designed to make you suffer, I swear. And when I asked why there couldn't just be a seamless transition between the two benefits, the agent just laughed. LAUGHED!!! Like my family going without income was funny!!! 😡😡😡

Ugh, that's terrible! Did you end up getting backpay for all those weeks once it was approved?

I tried calling EDD about my baby bonding claim for DAYS and couldn't get through. Finally used this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. Cost money but worth every penny when I was desperate to find out why my PFL claim was stuck. The rep was able to push my claim through right away once I got connected. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 or their website claimyr.com

Oh interesting! Never heard of this. If I don't hear anything by Monday I might try this. Did they explain why your claim was stuck?

You're right about not needing a new claim, but there's still a transition form (DE2501FP) that needs to be processed. Unfortunately, the online account often doesn't show any status during this waiting period - it's one of the most frustrating parts of the process.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! The rep said my application is processing normally but their system is backlogged. She said it could take up to 21 DAYS total for the transition from disability to PFL baby bonding. She also mentioned they're processing in the order received, and my payments will be retroactive to when my disability ended. So I guess I just keep waiting... 🙄 Thanks everyone for the advice and commiseration!

That's actually good news! Frustrating about the wait, but at least you know it's processing and you'll get retroactive payments. Thanks for updating us - I'm sure this will help other new parents going through the same thing.
