Disability ended yesterday - do I need to file new claim for PFL baby bonding?
I'm so confused right now! My pregnancy disability just ended yesterday (May 26th) and I submitted my baby bonding paperwork the same day. Do I have to create a completely new claim for the PFL baby bonding portion or does it automatically transition from disability? This is my first baby and I'm trying to figure out if I did this right. The EDD website wasn't clear to me at all... Will there be a gap in my payments during this transition? Really stressing about making rent next month if there's a delay!

You don't need to file a completely new claim. If you were already on SDI for pregnancy disability, you just need to file the PFL form DE2501FP for the baby bonding portion. It sounds like you already submitted this on the 26th, so you should be good! The transition should be pretty seamless if you did it correctly.

•Thank you!! Is there any way to check if I filed it correctly? I'm worried because I can still see my disability claim online but don't see anything about baby bonding yet.

i just went thru this last month! you dont need a whole new claim, just the bonding paperwork which sounds like you already sent. but heads up there might be like a 1-2 week gap between your last disability payment and first bonding payment. thats normal

•Oh no, really? I can't afford a gap right now... Is there any way to prevent that delay?

You've done it correctly by submitting the DE2501FP form on the same day your disability ended. The transition from pregnancy disability to PFL baby bonding should happen automatically, but there are a few things to know: 1. Your claim technically stays the same - it's just transitioning from SDI to PFL 2. There is often a processing gap of 7-10 days between the last disability payment and first PFL payment 3. You should see the baby bonding claim appear in your online account within 5-7 business days 4. The first certification period for baby bonding will include days starting from May 27th If you don't see anything by June 2nd, you should call EDD to confirm they received your paperwork.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll keep checking my online account and wait until June 2nd before panicking.

When I had my baby last year I messed this up because I thought the same thing! Make sure you actually filled out form DE2501FP specifically (not just a general claim). If you submitted online through SDI Online there should have been a specific option for PFL Bonding.

•I'm pretty sure I used the right form... it was specifically for bonding with my new baby. But now you've got me worried! Maybe I should try to contact EDD to double check?

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!! I did everything "correctly" like they tell you and STILL had to wait 3 WEEKS between my disability ending and bonding payments starting!!! EDD kept saying "it's processing" but meanwhile I couldn't pay my bills!!! CALL THEM ASAP and don't trust the system to work automatically!!!!

•3 weeks?! That's terrifying! Did calling them actually help speed things up?

If you're worried about confirming your claim status, try using Claimyr to reach an EDD agent quickly (claimyr.com). I spent days trying to get through on my own about my transition from disability to baby bonding, then used their service and got connected in 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The agent confirmed my bonding claim was received and processing, which saved me a lot of anxiety. Worth it just to confirm everything is on track.

•I've never heard of this service! Does it actually work? I've been trying to call EDD all morning with no luck.

•Yes, it worked for me last month when I had issues with my claim. Doesn't fix EDD's problems but at least gets you to a human who can check your claim status.

To directly answer your original question: 1. No, you don't need to file a brand new claim 2. The paperwork you submitted on the 26th (DE2501FP) is exactly what you needed to do 3. Your SDI pregnancy disability claim automatically transitions to PFL baby bonding 4. There is typically a processing gap of 5-14 days between benefits 5. Your online account will update to show the baby bonding claim soon If you're worried, you can call EDD at 1-877-238-4373, but be prepared for long wait times. Online is usually faster for checking status once the transition processes.

•this is exactly right! i remember being confused too bc the website makes it sound like its a whole separate thing, but its actually just continuing the same claim basically

Update: I finally got through to EDD this morning! They confirmed they received my bonding paperwork and that my claim is being processed. The rep said there will likely be a 7-10 day gap before my first baby bonding payment, but everything is on track. Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone!

•That's great news! The 7-10 day gap is pretty standard, so it sounds like everything is proceeding normally. Enjoy your time bonding with your little one!

So glad you got confirmation from EDD! That must be such a relief. I went through this same transition 6 months ago and the waiting/uncertainty is the worst part. Once you get that first bonding payment, the rest should come regularly every two weeks. The 7-10 day gap is totally normal - I think mine was about 9 days. Take advantage of this time to rest and bond with your baby without worrying about the paperwork side of things. You did everything right!

•This is so reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it! The uncertainty really is the hardest part - I keep second-guessing myself about whether I filled everything out correctly. 9 days isn't too bad at all. Thank you for the encouragement about bonding time, I definitely need to focus on enjoying this special time with my baby instead of stressing about paperwork!
