hey i know this isnt directly related but make sure ur keeping track of ur weeks for bonding leave too!! u only get 8 weeks total and they will need to be taken within 12 months of birth. i got confused about this and almost lost some of my bonding time becuz i didnt realize the clock was ticking during my disability extension!
UPDATE: You guys are all amazing! I went to the doctor's office this morning and refused to leave until I spoke with the office manager. Turns out they HAD filled out the form but it was sitting in someone's outbox for over a week! The manager apologized and faxed it while I was standing there, and gave me the confirmation page as proof. Now I just have to wait for EDD to process it. Thank you all for the advice and support!
Great job advocating for yourself! The squeaky wheel definitely gets the grease in these situations. Now just keep an eye on your EDD account - it should update within 7-10 business days to show your new end date. Once that happens, you'll be able to certify for benefits again. Glad it's moving in the right direction!
When I had my twins in January, my PFL claim went through in just 4 days after my SDI ended! But then I had a friend who applied in February and hers took 3 full weeks. I think it really depends on their backlog and how busy they are at different times. If your claim is straightforward and your documentation is complete, you should be fine. Just keep checking the portal! By the way, if you're applying for baby bonding, remember that both parents can take it now! My husband is planning to take his portion in June when I go back to work.
4 days would be amazing! My wife already used her PFL time immediately after birth while I kept working. Now I'm taking over so she can return to her job. Hoping it gets approved soon.
Quick update check: Has your claim status changed at all? It's been about a week since your original post, so you should be starting to see movement if everything was filed correctly.
Yes! Actually just got approved yesterday - took exactly 9 business days. First payment is already processing. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance!
Regarding the EDD debit card - it doesn't always arrive automatically after a decision reversal. Since you mentioned you're seeing weeks show as paid online but haven't received your card: 1. The card is issued by Bank of America, not directly by EDD 2. If this is your first time receiving benefits, a new card should be automatically issued within 7-10 business days of your first payment posting 3. However, after appeals, sometimes this process needs manual intervention I would recommend calling Bank of America EDD Debit Card customer service directly at 1-866-692-9374 to check on status. You'll need your EDD Customer Account Number and personal information to verify your identity. If they don't show a card in process, then contact EDD to ensure they've properly processed your account for payment distribution. The retroactive payments won't do much good if you can't access them!
Thank you for this detailed info! I just called BofA and they confirmed my card was mailed yesterday! Should have it by next week. I'm so relieved this nightmare is finally ending.
So happy for you!!! There's nothing better than that feeling when you finally WIN against a company that tried to screw you over during the most vulnerable time of your life. Enjoy your baby without all that stress hanging over you! πΆπ
Congrats!! And just so you know, you might want to consult with an employment attorney too. Being terminated during/right after protected leave could potentially be grounds for a wrongful termination suit. The fact that you won your EDD appeal strengthens your position. Just something to consider!
paper claims r the worst!! when i had my baby in 2025 i filed online and had my money in 10 days. tell him to try calling at exactly 8:01am thats when i always get thru
Just wanted to follow up - any updates on your husband's claim? Were you able to get through to EDD?
Yes! Finally got some answers. He tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through to EDD yesterday. Turns out they needed his doctor to fill out an additional certification form that was never sent to us. They're mailing it now and said once they receive it back, they'll process everything for the full retroactive period. So frustrating but at least we know what's happening now!

i don't no about the depression stuff but for the partial unemployment i was on that for like 4 months last year when my hours got cut. just make sure u report exactly how much u made each week when u certify or they'll come after u for overpayment later!! happened to my roomate and she had to pay back like $1200!!!

β’So true!! My cousin got hit with an overpayment notice for $3400 because she reported her hours wrong for like 6 weeks! EDD is super picky about reporting everything correctly.

To address your situation comprehensively: 1. For your current part-time job: You can continue certifying for UI for the days you don't work, but you must report all earnings. Your weekly benefit amount will be reduced based on your part-time income. 2. For your mental health concerns: If a doctor certifies your depression is preventing you from working, you could qualify for State Disability Insurance (SDI). This requires a DE2501 form completed by a healthcare provider. 3. Important distinction: Paid Family Leave (PFL) would NOT apply in your situation as it's specifically for bonding with a new child or caring for an ill family member. 4. If you quit: Generally, voluntarily quitting disqualifies you from UI unless you can prove "good cause." Mental health issues documented by a healthcare provider before quitting can sometimes qualify as good cause. I recommend maintaining your part-time job while seeking medical help for your depression. This preserves your partial UI benefits while you explore SDI options with proper medical documentation.

β’This is incredibly helpful, thank you. I think I'll keep the part-time job while I talk to my doctor. One last question - if I do qualify for SDI for depression, would the benefits be similar to what I'm getting from unemployment?

β’SDI benefits are calculated differently from UI. SDI pays approximately 60-70% of your wages earned during your base period (roughly 5-18 months before your claim starts). This could be more or less than your current UI benefit, depending on your specific earnings history. You can use the EDD's SDI calculator on their website to get an estimate of your potential benefit amount.
