PFL claim stuck in limbo after transitioning from disability - no updates since October
Super worried about my PFL baby bonding situation! My pregnancy disability ended on 1/12/25 and I filed for PFL on 1/19/25. EDD sent me a text saying they'd reach out if they needed anything else from me, but it's been complete silence since then. Haven't received ANY payments since my last disability check! My savings are almost gone and my husband's income barely covers our mortgage. Has anyone else experienced this weird gap between disability and PFL? It's been over 3 weeks now and I'm starting to panic. Do I need to call them? Submit something else? I checked my online account and it just shows my claim as 'pending' with no explanation. Help!!!

•A MONTH?? I can't wait that long! Did you do anything to speed it up or just had to wait it out?

There's often a processing gap between Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) and Paid Family Leave for baby bonding. Three weeks is unfortunately within normal processing times right now. However, you should definitely call EDD to check on your claim status since you're already past the 10-day processing estimate they give. Make sure they have all your documentation and that nothing is holding up your claim. Also verify that your physician properly closed your disability claim with an end date of 1/12/25, as this is required before they can process the PFL portion. Sometimes the transition gets stuck if there's any discrepancy in dates.

•Thank you so much! I've been trying to call them every day this week but can't get through - just get the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume. Any tricks to actually reaching a human being there?

•OMG 6 WEEKS?? That's criminal when you have a newborn and no income!

I had similar issues transitioning from disability to PFL last year. The system is frustrating beyond belief! Two things to check: 1. Make sure your doctor properly closed your disability claim with a RTW (return to work) date that matches when you filed PFL 2. Check if your DE2501F was properly processed - this is the form that officially ends your pregnancy disability And most importantly - KEEP CALLING. The EDD phone system is designed to frustrate you into giving up. I found using Claimyr (claimyr.com) was the only way I got through. They connected me to an EDD agent in about 10 minutes after I spent days getting nowhere. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Once I got an actual person on the phone, they found my PFL claim was just sitting there waiting for someone to push it through the system. Got paid 3 days later!

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I had no idea about the DE2501F form - my doctor never mentioned that. I'm going to check on that right away. And I'll look into that Claimyr service because I'm losing my mind trying to get through on the phone!

The entire EDD system is BROKEN!!! I had my baby in November and I'm STILL fighting with them about my transition from disability to baby bonding. They lost my paperwork TWICE and then had the nerve to tell me I didn't qualify even though I've been at my job for 3 years!!! My advice? Document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every text. You'll need it when they inevitably screw something up. And don't trust the online system - it never shows what's actually happening with your claim.

•EXACTLY!! You need at least 3 months of expenses saved because EDD will find some way to delay your money when you need it most!

This transition delay between Pregnancy Disability and PFL is unfortunately common, but there are specific steps you can take to resolve it: 1. Verify your disability claim shows as properly closed in the system 2. Check that your PFL claim DE2508F form was properly completed with the correct child information 3. Call EDD specifically during the first hour they open (8:00-9:00am) when wait times are shortest 4. Use the Contact Us form on the EDD website specifically referencing the transition delay In my experience helping clients with these issues, there's often a simple documentation issue that's easily fixed once you reach the right person. The system is designed to process these transitions, but sometimes it needs a human to push it through.

•Thank you so much for the specific steps! I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow. Do you know if there's a different number I should call specifically for PFL transition issues?

•The main PFL number (1-877-238-4373) is still your best option, but ask specifically for a PFL specialist when you get through. Regular EDD reps sometimes can't fully access the PFL system.

When I was waiting for my PFL after disability last year my coworker told me she had luck submitting a new claim completely but idk if thats good advice actually lol. My sister-in-law said just keep calling until you get through but that took her like 3 full days of trying! This whole process is so confusing especially with a newborn.

•Please don't submit a second claim - this can actually cause more delays as the system will flag it as a potential duplicate and may freeze both claims while they investigate.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Used the Claimyr service that someone recommended and was connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. Turns out my doctor DID file the DE2501F form but it was processed under a slightly different name (they had my middle name as my last name 🙄). The agent fixed it right there on the phone and said I should see payments within 3-5 business days. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

•Great news! This is exactly why speaking to a representative is so important. Simple data entry errors are common but usually quick to fix once identified. Be sure to follow up if you don't see payments by next week.
