EDD PFL Baby Bonding timeline - applied April 15 but no approval yet?

My husband submitted his baby bonding PFL claim on April 15 (after his 2 weeks of employer paternity leave ended) and we're still waiting for any update. This is our first baby so we're totally new to all of this! His EDD account just shows 'pending' with no other info. Some coworkers told him it would only take a week to get approved, but it's been almost 3 weeks now. How long does the approval process usually take? And once approved, how quickly do payments start coming in? We're trying to budget for the next few months since he's planning to take the full 8 weeks to bond with our daughter. Any insight from people who've been through this recently would be super helpful!

The normal processing time is 5-10 business days for baby bonding PFL claims, but the system has been totally backlogged since February. My claim took exactly 16 days to process last month, and the payment came through 3 days after approval. Make sure your husband uploaded his baby's birth certificate and that your employer properly verified his last day worked. Those are usually the things that cause delays.

Thank you! He did upload the birth certificate right away, but I'm not sure about the employer verification part. Is that something he needs to follow up on, or does EDD contact the employer directly?

Processing times vary widely depending on current workload at EDD, but there are a few important things to know: 1. Baby bonding PFL claims require proof of relationship (birth certificate) and verification of time off from the employer 2. The employer has 2 business days to respond to EDD's verification request 3. Once approved, payments are typically processed within 24-48 hours and deposited via direct deposit or mailed as a debit card 4. The current average processing time is 14-21 days according to recent data If it's been more than 21 days, your husband should contact EDD directly to check if there are any issues with his claim. Make sure he has his claim ID number ready when calling.

This is really helpful information, thank you! It's been 19 days now, so we'll give it a couple more days before calling. Do you happen to know what hours are best for reaching someone at EDD? I've heard the phone lines are a nightmare.

The whole system is a JOKE!!!! My claim took 6 WEEKS to process and when I called they said "oh sorry we're just backed up" but somehow my coworker who applied AFTER me got approved in 10 days??! How does that make ANY sense? You need to call them EVERY DAY until someone actually looks at your claim. That's literally the only way to get anything done with EDD. They'll just let it sit there forever otherwise!!

I had a totally different experience - my claim was processed in 8 days last month. I think it really depends on whether your application has any red flags or missing information. But I agree calling can help speed things up if it's been more than the standard processing time.

After my baby was born i applied for disability first because of c-section recovery and that took almost 3 weeks then had to apply for baby bonding after that was done and the transition was a mess! but once it finally got approved they back paid from the start date. Good luck with your baby! The time goes so fast enjoy it!

If you need to get through to EDD, I'd recommend using Claimyr.com - it's the only way I could actually talk to a rep after trying for days. You put in your number and they call you when they've gotten through the queue. Saved me hours of headaches and they got my delayed claim sorted out in one call. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. It was honestly worth it for me because I was going crazy trying to get through the regular way.

Thank you for the tip! If we don't hear anything by next week, we'll definitely check this out. Did they give you any indication of why your claim was delayed when you finally spoke to someone?

In my case, there was a mismatch between my employer's records and what I put on my claim form about my last day worked (I was off by one day). Such a small thing but it caused a 3-week delay! The EDD rep fixed it while I was on the phone and my claim was processed 2 days later.

For baby bonding claims specifically, here's the current timeline based on my recent experience and what I've gathered from others: - Initial processing: 14-21 days (this is when status changes from 'pending' to 'approved') - First payment: 2-4 days after approval - Subsequent payments: Every two weeks after certifying One thing that sometimes causes confusion: if your husband hasn't set up direct deposit, his first payment will come as a physical EDD debit card via mail, which can take an additional 5-7 business days to arrive. All subsequent payments would be loaded to that same card. If you're approaching the 21-day mark, I'd definitely recommend calling to check if there's an issue that needs resolution.

Thank you for the detailed timeline! He did set up direct deposit, so hopefully that will help speed things up once approved. We'll definitely call if we don't see a status change by the end of this week.

To answer your follow-up question about employer verification - EDD does contact the employer directly, but sometimes employers don't respond promptly. Your husband can call his HR department to verify they received and responded to EDD's request. This is often the biggest cause of delays with PFL claims.

Update: Just wanted to let everyone know that my husband's claim was FINALLY approved yesterday (so it took exactly 22 days). The status changed to approved on his EDD account, and we got an email notification too. Thanks for all the helpful advice! Now we're just waiting for the payment to come through.

Great news! The payment should arrive within 2-3 business days if direct deposit is set up. Enjoy this special bonding time with your new baby!
