EDD PFL Baby Bonding processing times - is first week paid in 2025?

Finally getting around to using my remaining baby bonding weeks after going back to work for a few months (baby is now 7 months old). I submitted my PFL claim for the remaining 5 weeks last Tuesday through the EDD portal, but still don't see anything in my account besides the confirmation number. Does anyone know how long processing typically takes these days? Also, I'm confused about whether the first week is paid or unpaid for baby bonding PFL? I remember for my initial claim after my disability ended, there wasn't a waiting period, but I've heard from a coworker that there's an unpaid first week? Really hoping that's not true since I'm only taking 5 weeks total and need every penny with these daycare costs hitting soon!

hey i did my baby bondig claim last month and it took exactly 10 days for me to get approved. I think they say 2 weeks on there website but mine was faster. there's no waiting period for baby bonding!! your coworker is mixing it up with disability before birth that has the 1 week waiting period.

Oh thank goodness! That's such a relief about no waiting period. I was panicking about losing a whole week of pay. 10 days sounds reasonable - I'm on day 6 now so hopefully by early next week. Thanks!

Congrats on your little one! My baby is 8 months now and I just went through this whole process too. Just wanted to confirm the other poster is right - there is NO waiting period for PFL baby bonding. The waiting period is only for pregnancy disability (SDI). For processing times, mine took about 12 days in January.

This is accurate. There is no waiting period for PFL claims for baby bonding. The waiting period only applies to disability claims (including pregnancy disability). For 2025, the standard processing time for PFL baby bonding claims is 7-14 calendar days from submission, assuming all documentation is in order and your identity verification is complete. If you previously received pregnancy disability benefits and are transitioning to baby bonding, processing is typically on the faster end of that range.

Be prepared for DELAYS!! My claim from February took 27 days to process and I almost missed a mortgage payment! Supposedly they're dealing with a system upgrade in 2025 that's causing major backlogs. I called EVERY SINGLE DAY for two weeks and couldn't get through to anyone who could help. The EDD is absolutely useless when it comes to getting any kind of status update on your claim.

Sorry to hear about your experience! If you're having trouble reaching EDD about a pending PFL claim, you might want to try Claimyr. I was in a similar situation and couldn't get through after trying for days. Claimyr connected me to an EDD agent in about 25 minutes when I was expecting hours of wait time. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 that shows how it works. Their website is claimyr.com - totally worth it when you're stressed about benefits not processing.

They said something about my employer verification taking longer but I think that's just their standard excuse. My HR confirmed they responded to EDD within 48 hours. The whole system is just broken!!

I've been through PFL twice now and here's what I learned: the "normal" processing time is 7-14 days, BUT that assumes everything goes perfectly. If there's ANY issue with your claim - even something tiny - it can get stuck in processing limbo for weeks without anyone telling you. Some tips: 1) Check your EDD account daily to see if they've posted any notices requesting additional info 2) Make sure your employer responds to their verification request promptly 3) Call if you don't see movement after 10 business days And yes, 100% confirmed there is NO waiting period for PFL baby bonding. That's only for disability claims.

My wifes claim got stuck because her doctors office put the wrong date on something. The EDD never contacted us about it! They just let the claim sit there for 3 weeks until she called and figured it out. So annoying.

UPDATE: My claim was just approved this morning! Took exactly 9 days from submission to approval. No waiting period deducted, so all 5 weeks were approved. Thanks everyone for your help!

So glad to hear it worked out! Enjoy your time with your little one! 💗
